■ Philips: Philips rapporteert vandaag.
Japan is gesloten.
🔵 English version
■ European opening: Broad European futures are down around 0.9%, DAX futures roughly 0.8% and UK futures about 0.2%. A weaker open therefore remains the base case, but Europe is again displaying its Teflon characteristics and holding up surprisingly well against the heavy damage in US technology. Much lower oil and relatively stable US futures increase the probability that buyers return at lower levels and part of the opening losses are recovered later in the session.
■ European fundamentals: Eurozone manufacturing continued to expand in October with a PMI of 52.7, above the preliminary estimate. Export orders also grew at their fastest pace in more than four years. The European economy therefore provides a stronger signal than weak futures and technology problems alone would suggest.
■ General risk factors: The current selloff is not being driven by weaker structural growth in AI or semiconductors. Markets are trying to determine which companies can continue raising sufficient capital, which businesses can ultimately earn adequate returns on enormous investment programmes and which companies will fail financially. That uncertainty is also feeding into hedge funds and investment funds and could lead to further deleveraging and forced selling.
■ Teflon Europe: Europe is increasingly diverging from US technology. That can continue for some time, but financial markets are ultimately interconnected and part of the divergence will eventually need to close. This does not mean we expect another crisis comparable with 2008, but it does mean that problems in technology and credit cannot remain isolated indefinitely.
■ US elections: The US midterm elections take place today. This can create a wait-and-see market as investors seek clarity on the future balance of power in the House and Senate and the implications for fiscal policy, banks, energy, AI and data centers. The removal of political uncertainty could later become a catalyst in its own right.
■ Ahold Delhaize: Degroof Petercam cut its price target from €40 to €38 and maintained its Hold rating. Attention on Wednesday will focus primarily on the outlook, as the analyst estimates that the recent cyberattack could cost around €600 million of revenue and €150 million of EBIT and put full-year guidance at risk. The Tesco acquisition in the Czech Republic and Slovakia is attractively priced and strategically important in the Czech market, but adds only around 3% to 4% to group revenue. Degroof also expects another share buyback.
■ Anthropic: Anthropic is increasing its minimum Google Cloud commitment by $6.8 billion to $121.3 billion through July 2033. It also expects another $125 billion to $150 billion of additional TPU capacity requirements between 2028 and 2031, although that second amount is not guaranteed Alphabet revenue. Anthropic is nevertheless making Google's TPU technology an important part of its future AI infrastructure.
■ Alphabet: For Alphabet, this is clearly positive over the long term because enormous investments in Cloud and TPU are increasingly supported by multi-year customer demand. Near term, however, the financial burden remains heavy due to enormous capex, higher financing requirements and pressure on free cash flow. The real test will therefore be how much return Alphabet ultimately earns on every new dollar invested in AI infrastructure.
■ Apple: Apple reported $114.48 billion of revenue and $2.10 of EPS, both above expectations. For the December quarter, Apple expects gross margin of 45% to 46% versus 47.9% in the latest quarter. Higher memory costs and slower services growth are weighing on sentiment. The muted reaction to strong results shows that good numbers alone are currently not sufficient to lift technology.
■ Palantir: Revenue increased 96% to $2.31 billion and US commercial revenue surged 148% to $984 million. Full-year 2026 revenue guidance increased to $8.530 billion to $8.534 billion. Operating growth remains exceptional, although the market reaction was again relatively muted and investors are becoming more critical of valuation and new-contract trends.
■ Oracle: Oracle is raising $20 billion through equity and bonds to finance AI and cloud investment and lost 8.8% Monday. The transaction highlights exactly what markets are struggling with. The structural growth of AI is not the problem. Financing requirements, pressure on free cash flow and ultimate returns on enormous investments are the key issues.
■ Google financing: Google is also raising new capital. This confirms that even financially powerful hyperscalers are increasingly using capital markets to support enormous AI infrastructure programmes. Debt is not automatically negative, but markets ultimately need to see returns on the new capacity clearly exceed financing costs.
■ AMD: AMD reports after the close tonight. Data-center revenue, AI accelerators, margins and especially guidance will matter for AMD itself and for sentiment across the entire semiconductor sector after the recent selloff.
■ Philips: Philips reports today. Revenue, margins, free cash flow, guidance and continued progress on product quality are the key areas to watch. We are not acting on the shares. We view Roy Jakobs as a strong CEO, but remain on the sidelines in Philips for now.
■ Other earnings: Shopify, Pfizer and Eaton are among the companies reporting before Wall Street. After the close, Arista Networks, Super Micro Computer, Booking Holdings and Astera Labs report alongside AMD. AI and data-center names in particular could again influence technology sentiment.
■ Semiconductors and AI: Structurally, AI, memory, data centers and robotics continue to require enormous quantities of chips. The current selloff does not change that. The further high-quality names correct, the more interesting the opportunities ultimately become. Many stocks, however, came from extremely elevated levels and markets first need to process how much money is being spent and how much of that investment can actually be earned back.
■ Industrials, transportation and energy: Much lower oil supports industrials, aviation and transportation through lower energy and fuel costs, while energy producers may lag. Continued expansion in European manufacturing provides additional fundamental support.
■ Shell: Shell may initially face additional pressure because of the much lower oil price. We do not want to draw too much from that because crude is extremely volatile and one geopolitical headline can reverse the picture completely. Our fundamental view on Shell therefore does not change.
■ Banks, healthcare and consumers: Banks benefit from relatively high rates, but bond prices and credit quality remain risks. Healthcare and other defensive sectors can benefit if investors continue reducing risk. Lower energy costs support consumers, while China and purchasing power remain important variables for luxury.
■ Defensive rotation: The current market is not showing a broad exit from all equities. Capital can instead rotate from expensive technology into defensive sectors and companies with more stable cash flows. That is consistent with stronger Wall Street breadth despite a weak Nasdaq.
■ Rates and safe havens: Government bonds appear to be attracting some renewed safe-haven demand, pushing bond prices higher and effective yields lower. The US ten-year yield is around 4.91%, Japan around 2.77%, Germany around 3.29% and France around 4.90%.
■ Rates and AI credit stress: ISM manufacturing increased to 55.5 from 54.5, while prices paid declined to 75.2 but remains elevated. The US economy therefore remains resilient while AI capital requirements are increasing rapidly. Oracle, Google and other large technology companies are raising new capital. Financing costs, free cash flow and the ten-year yield are therefore becoming at least as important for technology as economic growth.
■ Wall Street: US equities initially moved higher Monday on the sharp drop in oil, but later reversed sharply lower, particularly in technology. The S&P 500 ultimately lost 0.51% and Nasdaq 1.07%, while the Dow Jones gained 0.41%. Advancers outnumbered decliners within the S&P 500 by around 2.2 to 1 and seven of eleven sectors finished higher. The correction therefore remains concentrated primarily in technology and is not yet broad capitulation. The S&P 500 trades around 19 times expected earnings, its lowest valuation since 2023.
■ US futures: S&P 500 futures are down around 0.2% and Nasdaq 100 futures also roughly 0.2% lower. That is relatively stable following Monday's selloff, but still provides no certainty that a durable bottom is in place.
■ Nasdaq 100 technical: Nasdaq 100 futures reached clear resistance yesterday and selling then returned aggressively. Today, some support appears to be forming at slightly lower levels, but substantial resistance remains above the market. Nasdaq 100 futures therefore become our most important technical gauge.
■ Technical rebound: A technical rebound in US equities is entirely possible today following the recent selloff. We stress that this would still only be a technical move for now. Sell on rallies has not disappeared while higher levels continue to attract sellers.
■ Contrarian view: The further high-quality technology shares correct, the more interesting the market becomes to us. Many names had risen extremely sharply and investors are now trying to exit through the same door simultaneously. That ultimately creates new opportunities, but it does not mean the bottom has already been reached today.
■ Asia: The KOSPI is down around 3.7% and Taiwan roughly 3.6%, while other Asian markets are generally lower. Japan is closed. Australia is holding up relatively better despite the recent rate increase and China remains mixed. Selling is again concentrated primarily in technology and semiconductors and therefore provides a clearly negative signal for European chip stocks.
■ Currencies: EUR/USD trades around 1.1190 and USD/JPY around 157.9, while the Dollar Index remains relatively stable around 101.8. The Australian dollar remains weak despite the rate increase and the yuan is also under pressure.
■ Oil and Iran: Oil fell around 7% Monday following reports that Iran may again be willing to talk with the United States. Crude is already recovering roughly 1% today, again demonstrating the extreme volatility of the market. The market interpretation is that Tehran gains more negotiating room as time passes, although one new escalation could immediately send oil sharply higher again.
■ Oil is not enough: Equities initially reacted enthusiastically to Monday's sharp oil decline, but Wall Street ultimately sold off even while crude remained low. That is an important signal. Cheaper energy helps inflation, rates and margins, but is currently insufficient to neutralise concerns around AI financing and potential forced selling.
■ Gold, silver and copper: Monday's strong precious-metals rally is already being partly reversed. Silver is down around 3% to $49.30 and gold roughly 1% to around $3,922. Copper continues to benefit structurally from investment in power grids and AI infrastructure, although China, technology sentiment and US yields remain the main near-term drivers.
■ Crypto: Bitcoin trades around $76,680 and has still not convincingly recovered from the Binance hack. Ether trades around $2,250 and net withdrawals from Binance have increased to around $4.7 billion. Crypto-related equities were also weak within the broader risk-off move. It may take time before confidence and liquidity fully recover.
■ Positioning: We have enough interesting cases on the sidelines and do not need to force anything. If markets fall further, more attractive entry levels will emerge. If momentum turns convincingly higher, we can add later. We do not need to identify the exact bottom.
■ Forced selling: We are explicitly monitoring how much additional forced selling may still emerge from hedge funds and investment funds. Current signals suggest that risk remains. This is an important reason why we do not automatically treat any technical rebound as a definitive bottom.
■ Desk view: For Europe, we expect a weaker to mixed opening, although recovery from lower levels remains distinctly possible. Teflon Europe continues to hold for now, but the divergence versus US technology cannot continue indefinitely. Financial markets are ultimately interconnected. This does not mean we expect another crisis comparable with 2008, but problems in technology and credit cannot remain isolated forever. The three major questions today are the midterms, Iran and extremely volatile oil, and above all the development of the AI debt burden. Near-term signals remain negative, but stabilisation and a technical rebound are possible. Nasdaq 100 futures become our main gauge. If we see support, stronger breadth and eventually several days of genuine inflows, we will become clearly more constructive. If rallies are sold again and further forced selling emerges, sell on rallies remains the better short-term scenario. Long term, we remain bullish on AI, semiconductors and robotics. The cheaper strong companies become, the more attractive the opportunities ultimately become.
