■ Olie: staat opnieuw circa 1,5–2% hoger.
Tegelijk is veel negatief nieuws inmiddels verwerkt.
■ ASM International: krijgt dezelfde korte-termijndruk vanuit semiconductors.
■ NVIDIA: won maandag ongeveer 1% terwijl veel andere grote technologieaandelen lager stonden.
■ AMD: neemt World Labs voor circa $8,2 miljard in aandelen over.
English
■ Europe: European futures are modestly higher and point to a mixed to mildly positive open. This is notable because US futures are under some pressure, oil is rising again and long-term yields remain elevated. Investors continue to absorb these negative factors remarkably well. Alongside a quiet open, there is therefore still a scenario in which Europe strengthens later in the day if rates and oil stop accelerating.
■ Wall Street: the S&P 500 lost 0.77% to 7,683.69 on Monday, the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.92% and the Dow Jones declined 0.67%. The closing numbers do not tell the entire story. The S&P 500 fell to 7,666.60 intraday and subsequently recovered, while no new accelerating selling wave developed into the close. This shows that buyers return when macro pressure eases even slightly.
■ Market breadth: US selling pressure was broad and smaller and equal-weighted equities were also weak. A convincing recovery therefore requires broader participation than a handful of megacaps. Positively, however, the session did not end in capitulation or a classic risk-off close.
■ Nasdaq and growth: technology remained relatively weak on Monday as higher long-term yields again fed directly into valuations. The Magnificent Seven were mostly lower. This remains the main negative read-through for Europe, particularly for growth stocks and semiconductor equipment.
■ US rates: the 10-year yield is around 5.26%, roughly 1 basis point higher, and continues to flirt with the 5.30% level. This remains the main risk for equities. The 2-year yield is also approaching 5%, meaning the entire US yield curve continues to reflect highly restrictive financial conditions.
■ Rates and stabilisation: yields do not need to fall sharply today to give equities some room. Simply stopping the acceleration around 5.25–5.30% could already be enough to remove pressure from rate-sensitive positions. For us, stopping the move higher matters more today than an immediate large decline in yields.
■ Fed and tightening: elevated oil, resilient economic activity and persistent inflation keep the possibility of further monetary tightening clearly alive. This explains why growth equities remain extremely sensitive to every new Treasury move.
■ Global bonds: the rise in capital costs has become global. Japan's 10-year yield is around 3.09% and yields also remain elevated in Korea and Australia. Germany's 10-year starts around 3.64%. What remains striking is that equities continue to hold up far better than the bond move alone would imply.
■ Australia: the central bank raised rates by 25 basis points as expected. Because the move was largely priced in, market impact is limited. More importantly, Australia confirms that global monetary conditions remain tight.
■ Positioning: the end of September and the third quarter is approaching. Portfolio rebalancing, profit-taking and reductions in protection can therefore matter more than on a normal session. After recent equity weakness and sharply higher yields, parts of the market are likely positioned more defensively or short.
■ Short covering: that defensive positioning itself creates upside risk. If yields stabilise or one clearly positive macro or geopolitical event appears, shorts may be unwound and an initially modest rebound can begin to reinforce itself. This makes the setup less one-sidedly negative than the macro headlines suggest.
■ Asia: Asia provides little support this morning. The Hang Seng is down around 0.6%, while both the Nikkei and Korea's Kospi are roughly 1% lower. Shenzhen is fractionally higher after substantial pressure over recent days. The correlation between Asia and Europe has been unusually low recently, however, meaning a weak Asian session does not automatically imply a weak European day.
■ China: remains a weaker part of the global picture. Equities have absorbed substantial pressure in recent sessions and the economy is still not showing a convincing new acceleration. For Europe today, US rates, oil and positioning are likely to matter much more than Chinese sentiment.
■ Oil: is again up roughly 1.5–2%. Brent trades around $106.77 and WTI near $93.94. This is clearly a negative macro factor, although oil remains within the broader range of recent sessions. As long as there is no convincing breakout higher, some traders believe equities can continue to absorb elevated energy prices.
■ Energy and asymmetry: higher oil directly supports producers while remaining negative for inflation, transport, industrial costs and ultimately rate expectations. At the same time, the energy risk premium is elevated. An unexpected diplomatic improvement in the Middle East could therefore trigger a rapid decline in oil and simultaneously support both bonds and equities.
■ Dollar and currencies: EUR/USD is around 1.1360 and USD/JPY near 157.5. The US yield advantage continues to support the dollar. If Treasury yields stop rising, incremental dollar demand could also fade and create some breathing room for commodities and other risk assets.
■ Gold: trades around $4,127 and is testing its first important technical support zones. The pattern is not yet strong enough to call a bottom. We continue to believe gold can eventually produce another substantial move higher, but we first want visible momentum.
■ Silver: has fallen to around $60.60 and has therefore suffered a very substantial correction. Technically, we do not think the decline is necessarily complete. In a heavier scenario, $55–56 could come back into view before a new upward setup develops. We therefore do not want to anticipate a bottom.
■ Copper: is holding up better than gold and silver. The physical market remains relatively tight and disruptions at several major mines support the supply picture. Structural demand from power grids, energy infrastructure, electrification and datacentres also remains strong. Copper therefore still does not give a clear recession signal.
■ Bitcoin: trades around $83,160 and is holding up reasonably well despite elevated yields. The fact that Bitcoin remains above $80,000 is a small positive in our view. Crypto-related equities were weaker on Monday, but there was no broad liquidation or panic.
■ Volatility: VIX moved toward 16 on Monday while VIX9D remained below it. This reflects increased uncertainty rather than acute stress. Investors reduced risk without seeking protection at any price.
■ Options: both in Amsterdam and the United States, options markets continue to show a remarkable downside buffer. Negative news is therefore being absorbed relatively well. This helps explain why equities remain difficult to break convincingly lower despite oil and rates.
■ AEX: the starting position remains reasonably balanced. Shell benefits from elevated oil, Ahold Delhaize offers defensive cash flows and chips can recover if US semiconductors and yields stabilise. A weak US technology session therefore does not automatically need to translate into a weak AEX open.
■ ASML: faces short-term pressure from the weak US chip sector and elevated yields. At the same time, a significant amount of negative news is already reflected. If SOX and Treasuries stabilise, relatively little may be required to produce technical recovery.
■ ASM International: faces the same short-term pressure from semiconductors. Stabilisation in the sector and yields could already be enough to reduce selling. The structural growth case remains intact.
■ Besi: remains more sensitive to changes in risk appetite and yields and can therefore move more sharply than ASML and ASM International. That sensitivity works both ways: improving sentiment can also trigger a relatively rapid rebound.
■ Micron: is becoming an increasingly important test for the memory and semiconductor cycle. A significant amount of negative news is already reflected in chip equities and upcoming results could reveal whether markets are moving too far ahead of a slowdown. Strong results could therefore generate a broader semiconductor reaction.
■ NVIDIA: gained around 1% on Monday while many other large technology stocks declined. The expanded buyback supports the shares, but more importantly NVIDIA again showed relative strength inside a weak sector.
■ AMD: is acquiring World Labs in an all-stock transaction worth around $8.2 billion. We see the deal as clearly positive for AMD over the longer term. By bringing in Fei-Fei Li, AMD is acquiring not only an AI company but significant expertise in spatial intelligence, world models, simulation and robotics. This can bring hardware, software and future AI workloads much closer together.
■ AMD and World Labs: we see the transaction primarily as a strategic move into physical AI. World models and simulation could eventually create enormous new compute workloads for robotics and autonomous systems. AMD gains earlier insight into the requirements future models place on Instinct, ROCm, memory, networking and complete rack-scale systems. This makes us clearly more constructive on AMD's long-term AI positioning.
■ Software and AI: software can remain under short-term pressure from high yields, but the AMD transaction demonstrates how important software, models and workloads are becoming to hardware companies. The distinction between chip company and software company is increasingly blurred. It is therefore too simplistic to treat software only as a rate-sensitive sector.
■ AI infrastructure: the structural investment cycle remains substantial. Higher financing costs make investors more demanding about returns and cash flow, but compute, networking, memory, software, power supply and datacentres all remain necessary for further AI development.
■ Lisa Su and AI: AMD's message remains that the AI cycle is still relatively early. This fits our broader view that the current investment wave is not only about faster accelerators but increasingly complete systems, software, simulation and ultimately physical AI.
■ Shell: Brent above $106 directly supports upstream activities and therefore provides support to the AEX. For the broader economy, the same oil price obviously remains an inflation risk.
■ Ahold Delhaize: defensive cash flows remain attractive in an environment of high yields and uncertainty. The shares can therefore again provide some offset if cyclical sectors or technology come under pressure.
■ Fluxys: first-half revenue rose to €343 million, EBITDA to €174.2 million and net profit to €45.3 million, while cross-border gas volumes increased almost 5% and flows to Germany jumped 25%. Despite lower LNG volumes through Zeebrugge, we view this as a strong set of results, with the growing regulated asset base and robust transit flows reinforcing Fluxys' strategic role in European energy infrastructure.
■ Legrand: results are solid rather than spectacular, but the key read-through is datacentres. 2026 datacentre revenue is expected to exceed €3 billion. This is another positive signal for the broader AI-infrastructure cycle and confirms that physical investment in datacentres remains very strong.
■ DAX: remains more sensitive to elevated yields and energy than the AEX or FTSE because of its larger industrial exposure. Germany can still recover if bond markets stabilise. The larger risk is another acceleration in both oil and yields.
■ Infineon: faces pressure from weak US semiconductor trading. After recent declines, however, stabilisation in SOX and yields may already be enough to reduce selling pressure.
■ SAP: elevated yields remain a valuation headwind. Fundamentally, however, there is no new signal that independently justifies another substantial wave of selling. Stabilisation in Treasuries could therefore also provide relief for SAP.
■ Vonovia: remains almost entirely dependent on long-term yields. Without another increase in rates, valuation pressure does not automatically need to intensify further. A genuine structural improvement ultimately still requires a real decline in yields.
■ Lufthansa: oil above $106 is clearly negative for future fuel costs. Hedging can limit the immediate effect, but the direction of energy remains unfavourable for the cost base.
■ CAC 40: receives a natural buffer from TotalEnergies against high oil, while technology remains more sensitive to yields. The French setup is therefore divided between energy, defensive quality and growth.
■ STMicroelectronics: weak US semiconductor trading remains the key short-term reference. Stabilisation there could quickly produce technical recovery. Structurally, STMicroelectronics remains exposed to electrification, industry and datacentres.
■ Schneider Electric: datacentres and electrification remain powerful structural demand drivers. Elevated yields limit valuation, but do little to change fundamental demand for power supply and infrastructure.
■ TotalEnergies: Brent above $106 remains directly positive for production activities and therefore supports the CAC 40.
■ Airbus: further Boeing delays strengthen the relative competitive position. Existing orders do not automatically shift, but strategically the development remains favourable for Airbus.
■ Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield: remains highly sensitive to long-term yields. Bond stabilisation is required before valuation can improve convincingly, but without another increase in rates selling pressure does not automatically need to accelerate.
■ FTSE: can remain relatively resilient when markets prefer energy, commodities and defensive cash flows. The index has less direct exposure to US technology and therefore benefits relatively when oil remains elevated.
■ BP: directly benefits from elevated oil and can again become an important support for the FTSE.
■ IAG: high oil is instead a clearly negative cost signal. Hedging can delay the immediate effect, but structurally expensive oil increases future fuel costs.
■ Eni and Equinor: continue to benefit directly from elevated oil, while Equinor also receives support from the European gas market. Energy equities therefore remain relatively strong heading into the European open.
■ Iberdrola: regulated revenues provide stability, while elevated yields continue to limit valuation. The shares therefore sit between defensive quality and a difficult financing environment.
■ Banks: we believe banks can again provide support to the market today. Elevated rates support net interest margins as long as the move does not become disorderly. Another sharp increase in long-term yields would, however, worsen the picture through credit and valuation risks.
■ Defensive equities: companies with stable cash flows remain relatively attractive while yields and macro uncertainty stay elevated. They can again offset weakness in technology or cyclicals.
■ Zscaler: recovered around 3% on Monday after the earlier sharp decline related to the departure of a senior commercial executive. This supports the idea that the initial selloff may have been excessive. The shares appear to be finding support at lower levels.
■ MongoDB: fell roughly 18.5% on Monday after a senior executive left for Meta. The stock remains extremely difficult and we are staying completely away. The volatility and dependence on sentiment currently make the risk unattractive to us.
■ Ondas: remains firmly on our potential buy list. Very high short interest makes the shares particularly interesting because positive news could potentially trigger a short squeeze. This is explicitly not guaranteed and timing remains uncertain, but the combination of drones, counter-drone technology, civilian security and elevated short exposure creates an interesting risk profile.
■ OCI Global: has reported results, but we deliberately follow the stock only from a distance. The shareholder structure and influence of major holders make it difficult for us to see an attractive risk/reward. We are therefore doing nothing with the shares.
■ Fastned: continued to move sharply higher on Monday. ABN AMRO sees room toward €60 and price action remains strong. After the recent rally, however, we do not want to chase the shares blindly; first we want to see how much of the positive scenario is already reflected.
■ Market implication: the macro backdrop remains challenging with the US 10-year yield around 5.26%, oil again up roughly 1.5–2% and weak Asian markets. Yet the tactical equity setup remains remarkably resilient. European futures are even modestly higher, Wall Street recovered from its intraday lows on Monday, volatility remained contained and options positioning continues to show downside buffers. With month- and quarter-end approaching, mere stabilisation in rates or oil could already be enough to trigger short covering and rebalancing.
■ Desk-view: our base case remains a mixed open with a genuine possibility that Europe strengthens during the session. The market is frustrating and moves without a clear day-to-day trend, but the most striking feature remains that investors still do not want to sell aggressively despite elevated yields, oil and weak Asian markets. The main risk remains a 1987-like scenario in which yields continue to rise while equities remain resilient for too long before correcting sharply. Our base case, however, is that dips continue to attract buyers, pressure from rates and energy eventually stabilises and this sticky phase later gives way to another upward move. Even if a sharp correction comes first, that would not automatically change our broader bull case around AI and the wider investment cycle.
