Dry bulk geeft extra steun
Strategische verbreding maakt CMB.TECH interessanter
English version
CMB.TECH: strong results push the stock higher, dips remain buying opportunities
No time to read the full article? Use the five bullets below for the key points.
■ CMB.TECH delivered strong Q2 results and is benefiting from high tanker and dry bulk rates.
■ The positive share-price reaction is logical: EBITDA, net profit, backlog and distribution all point in the same direction.
■ The investment view remains positive: the stock is in an upward trend and remains attractive on weakness.
■ The strategic broadening into dry bulk, offshore energy, chemical tankers, containers, ammonia and hydrogen makes CMB.TECH more interesting than a pure tanker name.
■ The caveats remain important: part of the profit comes from vessel sales, tanker rates are cyclical and the sector orderbook is large.
CMB.TECH published a strong quarterly update and the positive share-price reaction is understandable. The company is benefiting from exceptionally favourable market conditions in tankers and dry bulk, while its broader strategic positioning is becoming more visible.
For investors, this is mainly a confirmation of the existing trend. CMB.TECH is not a stock we want to avoid after these results. On the contrary: as long as the upward trend remains intact, weakness remains a buying opportunity in our view.
Investment view
Our Investment view on CMB.TECH remains positive. The stock is in an upward trend and, in our view, remains attractive on every serious dip. The company is benefiting from high freight rates, a tight tanker market, strong dry bulk markets and a broader strategic position than before.
The main reason is that CMB.TECH should no longer be seen only as a classic tanker name. The company has broadened into dry bulk, offshore energy, chemical tankers, containers and alternative fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen. The stock remains cyclical, but it is less one-dimensional than before.
Tankers currently provide the biggest earnings leverage, but dry bulk adds support and offshore energy adds another growth layer. The Fortescue agreement for up to 12 ammonia-powered Newcastlemax vessels fits that broader strategic story. CMB.TECH is benefiting from strong spot markets, while also building a larger and more diversified maritime group.
The correct conclusion is therefore positive, not defensive. The numbers are strong, the stock can rise on them and the shares remain attractive within the rising trend. The caveats are mainly about earnings quality and durability: high spot rates and vessel sales are positive, but not fully structural. That does not change the positive view, but it does determine how we want to buy the stock: on dips, not blindly after a sharp rally.
Numbers and outlook
CMB.TECH reported Q2 net profit of $364.4 million, or $1.26 per share. EBITDA came in at $552.8 million, compared with $224.1 million a year earlier. Operating earnings power in the quarter therefore more than doubled.
Revenue rose in Q2 to $703.9 million, compared with $387.8 million in Q2 2025. For the first half, revenue was $1.22 billion, compared with $622.9 million a year earlier. First-half profit was $733.2 million, compared with $32.8 million in H1 2025.
EBITDA also improved sharply. In Q2, EBITDA was $552.8 million, compared with $224.1 million a year earlier. First-half EBITDA was $1.11 billion, compared with $382.4 million in H1 2025. This points to strong operating leverage in the current market.
CMB.TECH also intends to distribute $0.64 per share. This consists of an interim dividend of $0.21 per share and a $0.43 per share payment out of available share premium. That is positive for shareholders and fits a company using strong market conditions to return capital.
The contract backlog remains stable at $3.26 billion. This includes two two-year CSOV time charters and one one-year VLCC time charter. The stable backlog is important because it gives additional visibility alongside the spot markets.
Tankers remain the biggest earnings lever
The tanker market was exceptionally strong. Disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb disrupted trade flows, lengthened routes and tightened available tonnage. Spot rates on key routes therefore rose sharply.
For CMB.TECH, this is directly visible in the rates. VLCC spot rates were $126,790 per day in Q2 and Suezmax spot rates were $123,405 per day. For Q3-to-date, VLCC rates were $125,404 per day, with 83% fixed, while Suezmax rates were $117,579 per day, with 73% fixed.
Broader market data confirm the same picture. CMB.TECH reported average VLCC TCE earnings of $140,029 per day in Q2, compared with a historical Q2 average of $30,198 per day. Suezmax averaged $146,567 per day, compared with a historical Q2 average of $30,946 per day.
That is very positive for earnings. It explains why the results are so strong and why the stock can move higher. As long as the tanker environment remains tight and routes remain disrupted, CMB.TECH continues to benefit directly.
Dry bulk adds support
CMB.TECH is not only benefiting from tankers. Dry bulk also made a strong contribution. Newcastlemax spot rates came in at $46,198 per day in Q2, compared with $23,081 a year earlier. Capesize spot rates were $39,998 per day and Panamax/Kamsarmax spot rates were $20,226 per day.
Support comes from several commodity flows. Iron ore, coal, bauxite and grain are supporting vessel demand, while longer routes support tonne-mile demand. The Guinea-China bauxite route and the gradual ramp-up of Simandou are especially important, because longer distances can be disproportionately positive for fleet utilisation.
This broadens the investment case. CMB.TECH is not solely dependent on crude oil and tanker rates. Dry bulk provides a second cyclical engine. That makes the stock more attractive, although dry bulk remains sensitive to Chinese demand, commodity flows, energy prices, weather and newbuilding capacity.
Strategic broadening makes CMB.TECH more interesting
The broader fleet structure is an important part of the story. CMB.TECH describes itself as one of the largest listed, diversified maritime groups in the world, with around 250 vessels across dry bulk, crude tankers, chemical tankers, container vessels and offshore energy. The company also offers hydrogen and ammonia fuel to customers.
That makes the investment case different from a pure tanker name. CMB.TECH combines high cyclical earnings leverage with long-term themes such as ammonia-powered shipping, offshore energy and fleet renewal. The delivery of several newbuild vessels in Q2 and Q3-to-date shows that the company is actively modernising the fleet.
For investors, this matters. Shipping companies are often valued mainly on the current cycle. At CMB.TECH, there is also a strategic layer. The group is becoming larger, broader and more relevant within the shift toward cleaner shipping and specialised maritime services.
Caveats around earnings
The first caveat is that not all profit is recurring. CMB.TECH is benefiting not only from high rates, but also from significant gains on vessel sales. In Q2, the sales of VLCCs Ilma and Ingrid and Suezmax Sienna generated around $127.4 million of gains.
Further gains are expected later in 2026. The sale of VLCC Donoussa is expected to generate around $74.3 million of gain in Q4. The sales of Suezmaxes Brest, Brugge and Bristol are expected to generate around $100.2 million in Q3 and $56.9 million in Q4.
That is positive because CMB.TECH is extracting value from the fleet. At the same time, it is not pure recurring operating profit. For valuation, the market must distinguish between structural charter income, cyclical spot earnings and gains from vessel sales.
The second caveat is normalisation of geopolitical disruption. If traffic through the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea normalises, part of the additional demand for tonnage can decline. CMB.TECH itself also points to a more cautious medium-term picture if trade flows normalise.
The third caveat is the tanker orderbook. CMB.TECH refers to a very large crude tanker orderbook, with 620 VLCC and Suezmax units on order. That is a real medium-term risk. High rates attract newbuilding orders, and extra capacity can later pressure the market balance.
What this means for the stock
For the stock, the results are positive. Profit is strong, EBITDA is very high, the distribution is attractive and market conditions are favourable. The positive share-price reaction is therefore logical.
The trend in the stock remains upward. As long as tanker rates stay high, dry bulk remains firm and the market values the broader group, CMB.TECH remains attractive. The best approach, in our view, is to buy weakness within the rising trend.
That is the core of our view. CMB.TECH remains attractive on dips. The results strengthen the story, but the best entry points usually do not come after the strongest share-price moves. They come on pullbacks within an intact positive trend.
Conclusion
Our Investment view on CMB.TECH remains positive. The numbers are strong and the positive share-price reaction is logical. The company is benefiting from high tanker rates, strong dry bulk markets, a stable backlog, an attractive distribution and broader strategic positioning.
The caveats do not change that positive view, but they do determine the discipline. Vessel sales are positive, but not fully recurring. Tanker rates are strong, but cyclical. The sector orderbook remains a risk for later.
For investors, CMB.TECH remains a stock to buy on dips. The trend is upward, earnings leverage is large and the strategic direction is right. As long as the market structure remains strong, weakness remains a buying opportunity in our view.
