Needham spreekt inmiddels expliciet over tightening supply for mainstream semiconductors.

English version
Needham now sees what we flagged earlier: the second AI trade is spreading into mature semiconductors
No time to read the full article? Use the bullets below for the key points and the stocks involved in this theme.
■ Ten days ago, we wrote (see article) that the AI semiconductor cycle was likely to broaden from accelerators, HBM and leading-edge chips towards mature and specialty semiconductors. Needham has now published new data pointing remarkably strongly in the same direction.
■ Memory remains the strongest driver of the cycle. DDR5 spot prices repeatedly reached new records during August, while global semiconductor sales momentum has risen to its strongest level since 1984 according to Needham.
■ More important for our earlier investment case is that strength is now broadening. All foundries reported higher wafer shipments quarter on quarter, while Silicon MSI increased by approximately 7% year on year and 9% quarter on quarter during the second quarter.
■ Needham is now explicitly referring to tightening supply for mainstream semiconductors. This directly supports our earlier expectation that higher utilisation could ultimately restore pricing power and create substantial operating leverage for mature and specialty producers.
■ The distinction between commodity and specialty remains crucial for us. UMC, Tower Semiconductor, GlobalFoundries and X-FAB remain interesting foundry names, while BESI, Cohu and Kulicke & Soffa could also benefit through equipment, assembly and testing as the semiconductor cycle broadens.
Ten days ago, we wrote extensively about what we described as the silent renaissance of mature and specialty semiconductors. Our thesis was that enormous AI investment would ultimately affect much more than NVIDIA, HBM, advanced packaging and the latest semiconductor nodes. As more AI systems are built, demand also rises for power management, analog, controllers, connectivity, photonics and many other chips that are often manufactured on older or specialised processes.
That development is now being recognised more broadly by the market. Needham's latest semiconductor research contains data that align almost exactly with the mechanism we previously described. Memory remains the strongest driver, but wafer production is now rising more broadly and, according to Needham, supply of mainstream semiconductors is beginning to tighten as well.
Investment view
For us, that last point is particularly important. The exceptional strength of DDR5 and HBM is no longer a surprise. The more interesting question was whether that strength would eventually spill over into other parts of the semiconductor industry.
The latest figures increasingly suggest that this is happening. All foundries reported higher wafer shipments quarter on quarter. Silicon MSI increased by approximately 7% year on year and 9% quarter on quarter during the second quarter.
Needham is now explicitly referring to tightening supply for mainstream semiconductors. This is precisely the point at which a memory- and AI-driven upcycle can begin developing into a broader semiconductor cycle.
Memory first, then the rest
The current cycle still begins with memory. DDR5 spot prices reached further records in August and, according to Needham, the 12-month average of monthly global semiconductor sales growth rose to 7.49%, its strongest momentum reading since 1984.
However, AI infrastructure consists of far more than GPUs and memory. More compute requires more power management, controllers, analog, connectivity and increasingly specialised components surrounding the processor.
That was exactly why we previously focused on mature and specialty fabs as well. When utilisation rises while pricing remains resilient and product mix improves, earnings can grow much faster than revenue. The high fixed-cost structure of semiconductor manufacturing then creates powerful operating leverage.
Investment data confirm the strength
Asian WFE figures fit the same picture. Combined wafer fabrication equipment imports into Korea, Taiwan and China increased by 5% in July compared with June. China alone jumped 14%, while combined imports across the three regions are approximately 14% above 2025 levels year to date.
This confirms that producers are responding to strong demand, but it also creates a risk later in the cycle. China in particular continues to add significant mature-node capacity.
That is why the distinction between commodity mature and specialty mature remains crucial. Generic semiconductors may eventually face renewed overcapacity and pricing pressure. Specialised technologies around power, RF, silicon photonics, SiGe and automotive applications are much harder to replace and can therefore retain more attractive economics.
Which stocks become more interesting?
Among foundries, Tower Semiconductor, GlobalFoundries, UMC and X-FAB remain logical names for us to monitor. Each offers different exposure to specialty manufacturing, rising utilisation and applications benefiting from broader AI infrastructure investment.
It is also notable that Needham links the development to Cohu, Kulicke & Soffa and BESI. That illustrates how the semiconductor cycle can spread further through the value chain.
For BESI, advanced packaging remains the key structural AI driver. However, if a larger part of the semiconductor industry begins to recover alongside high-end AI production, a broader cyclical tailwind could emerge on top of that structural growth.
Wall Street is beginning to see the same broadening
That is ultimately the most important aspect of Needham's latest analysis. It does not introduce an entirely new semiconductor thesis. The data primarily confirm a development that we had already described.
The AI boom first became visible in accelerators. HBM followed. Advanced packaging then became another major bottleneck. Now wafer volumes, mainstream semiconductor supply and mature and specialty capacity are beginning to move more clearly as well.
The narrative is therefore gradually shifting from a concentrated AI rally towards a broader semiconductor upcycle.
Conclusion
Ten days ago, we wrote that the AI boom was likely to affect a much larger part of the semiconductor industry than accelerators, HBM and leading-edge foundries alone. Needham's latest data now provide additional support for that view.
Memory remains the strongest driver, but something more important is beginning to emerge behind it. Wafer volumes are rising broadly and mainstream semiconductor supply is also beginning to tighten according to Needham. This brings us closer to a scenario in which utilisation, pricing and product mix improve simultaneously across parts of the mature and specialty semiconductor sector.
The first AI trade was primarily about the processor and memory. The next phase is increasingly about everything required to build, power, connect and control that enormous amount of compute.
That is exactly the broadening we identified earlier. Wall Street is now beginning to see it more clearly in the numbers as well.
