ASE Technology Holding: directe pricing power
BE Semiconductor Industries: de Europese equipmentwinnaar
Camtek versus Onto Innovation
Wij vinden beide relevant.
Amtech Systems: kleine naam, grote hefboom
Traditionele chipverbindingen gebruiken microscopische soldeerbumps.
AI is creating a new semiconductor shortage: these are the specialised winners of the packaging boom
No time to read the full article? Use the five bullets below for the key points.
- The next stage of the AI semiconductor cycle is increasingly shifting from wafer production alone towards advanced packaging. During the second half of 2026, packaging and test prices are in some cases rising faster than foundry prices as AI products absorb an increasing share of available capacity.
- The most direct beneficiaries are specialised OSAT companies such as ASE Technology Holding (ASX) and Amkor Technology (AMKR). They sell packaging and test capacity and therefore have direct operating leverage when prices, volumes and technical complexity per chip rise simultaneously.
- Within equipment, we consider BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI), Kulicke & Soffa Industries (KLIC), Onto Innovation (ONTO) and Camtek (CAMT) particularly interesting read-throughs. They do not benefit directly from higher packaging prices, but from the billions of dollars required to build additional 2.5D, 3D, HBM and hybrid-bonding capacity.
- A second group includes specialised test, inspection and process companies such as FormFactor (FORM), Cohu (COHU), Veeco Instruments (VECO), Amtech Systems (ASYS), Entegris (ENTG), Ultra Clean Holdings (UCTT), Advanced Energy Industries (AEIS) and MKS Instruments (MKSI). Greater AI-package complexity increases the number of process, inspection and test steps and therefore potentially increases semiconductor content per system.
- Our Investment view on the advanced-packaging supply chain is positive. We prefer companies whose earnings can accelerate directly through additional packaging capacity and increasing technical complexity. BESI, AMKR, ONTO and CAMT currently offer some of the strongest combinations of structural growth and visible AI exposure, while smaller names offer more upside potential but also materially higher risk.
The semiconductor industry is undergoing an important shift. For years, almost every discussion about semiconductor scarcity focused on which companies could produce enough advanced wafers. TSMC, Samsung and increasingly Intel therefore determined much of the economic balance within the industry.
AI is changing that picture.
An advanced GPU or custom AI accelerator is not finished when the individual chips leave the wafer. GPUs, CPUs, HBM memory and other chiplets subsequently have to be combined into one system with extreme precision. As these systems become larger and more complex, the bottleneck increasingly shifts towards packaging, bonding, inspection, substrates and test.
That is where pricing power appears to be increasing during the second half of 2026, creating investment opportunities beyond the familiar AI megacaps.
Investment view
Our Investment view on the advanced-packaging supply chain is positive. The key development is not simply that semiconductor prices are rising, but that economic value within the production chain is shifting towards areas where capacity is more difficult to expand. Advanced packaging has become one of the clearest examples.
Investors must distinguish between companies that merely pass higher costs through to customers and companies that actually benefit from the shortage. Chip designers such as MediaTek, Realtek Semiconductor, Parade Technologies and Global Mixed-mode Technology face higher costs for memory, substrates, mature-node production and packaging. Passing these costs on to customers primarily protects existing gross margins rather than creating extraordinary additional profits.
We therefore prefer companies further back in the supply chain. ASE Technology Holding and Amkor Technology can benefit directly from higher packaging volumes and a richer technology mix, while BE Semiconductor Industries, Kulicke & Soffa, Onto Innovation and Camtek benefit from the equipment and inspection systems required to expand capacity.
Behind them sits another group benefiting from the fact that each AI package requires greater test, metrology, materials and process content. FormFactor, Cohu, Veeco Instruments, Entegris, Ultra Clean Holdings, Advanced Energy and MKS Instruments are examples.
Valuation remains an important risk because many of these shares already contain substantial growth expectations. We would therefore not buy every company at every price. Nevertheless, the structural direction remains strong enough to keep monitoring corrections actively.
A different semiconductor shortage from 2021
The present situation resembles the semiconductor shortage of 2021 at first sight, but its cause is fundamentally different.
At that time demand was exceptionally broad. Consumer electronics, automotive, computers and industrial applications competed simultaneously for the same manufacturing capacity. Today, shortages are increasingly being created by one exceptionally capital-intensive end market: AI.
AI accelerators consume large quantities of advanced logic, HBM memory and high-value packaging. Manufacturers can therefore generate more economic value by directing available capacity towards AI than by continuing to manufacture conventional products.
This has an important secondary effect. When production lines are converted or capacity is reserved for AI, supply for other applications declines. Scarcity can therefore emerge even in markets where end demand itself is not expanding dramatically.
Pricing power is increasingly being driven by constrained supply.
Packaging prices are rising faster
Signals from the Taiwanese semiconductor industry increasingly indicate that price pressure will continue during the second half of 2026. Both advanced and mature foundry processes are becoming more expensive, but price adjustments within outsourced semiconductor assembly and test are occurring particularly frequently.
The explanation is straightforward. The back end of semiconductor manufacturing has become far more complex.
In traditional chips, packaging mainly connected a completed chip electrically to the system and physically protected it. In modern AI processors, packaging has become part of the architecture itself.
A NVIDIA, AMD or custom hyperscaler accelerator may contain several large logic dies and multiple HBM stacks. All components need to exchange enormous volumes of data while consuming as little energy as possible.
The number of chips per package is therefore increasing together with the technical value required to integrate them.
Higher prices are not automatically positive for chip designers
Realtek Semiconductor, Parade Technologies and Global Mixed-mode Technology have highlighted higher manufacturing costs. MediaTek describes much of the current pricing adjustment as a pass-through: costs are transferred to customers to protect gross margins.
That distinction is crucial.
A company that sells a product for 100 with costs of 60 and then raises its selling price to 110 because its costs also rise by 10 has not created additional margin. Nominal revenue increases, but the underlying economics change very little.
This does not necessarily make IC designers losers. Their ability to pass on costs demonstrates some pricing power. The more attractive investment opportunity lies with the companies whose scarce capacity is causing those additional costs.
That is where the search for the real beneficiaries begins.
ASE Technology Holding: direct pricing power
ASE Technology Holding (ASX) is the world's largest independent OSAT provider and therefore one of the most direct listed exposures to the current packaging shortage.
ASE assembles and tests chips for a broad range of semiconductor companies. As customers move towards more complex packages, both volume and revenue value per chip can increase.
This differs from traditional semiconductor cycles. Growth does not have to come solely from processing more chips. If a larger share of production shifts from basic packaging towards 2.5D, fan-out and other advanced solutions, average revenue per package may also rise.
Tight capacity also strengthens ASE's negotiating position. When utilisation approaches its limits and customers urgently require production, pricing power shifts from buyer to supplier.
This makes ASE one of the clearest direct beneficiaries of the signal now emerging from the Taiwanese supply chain.
Amkor Technology: perhaps the most interesting US pure-play
Amkor Technology (AMKR) is the largest US-headquartered OSAT provider and arguably one of the purest ways for investors to gain American exposure to this trend.
The company generated record second-quarter 2026 revenue of approximately $1.9 billion, 26% more than a year earlier. Amkor is also investing heavily in additional capacity and is developing a major US advanced-packaging base in Arizona.
That domestic position may become strategically more valuable. The United States is investing billions to return advanced semiconductor manufacturing to domestic soil, but a local semiconductor supply chain is incomplete if the most complex packaging still has to be performed entirely in Asia.
Amkor can help fill that gap.
The company therefore benefits simultaneously from higher AI volumes, increasing technical complexity and efforts to build a broader US semiconductor supply chain.
BE Semiconductor Industries: the European equipment winner
BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI) does not earn directly from higher OSAT pricing. It benefits from what happens next.
When ASE, Amkor, TSMC, memory producers and other companies lack sufficient packaging capacity, they need to construct additional production lines. Those lines require specialised equipment, which is precisely where BESI is positioned.
The numbers demonstrate that this is already more than a future story. BESI received €292.9 million of orders during the second quarter while revenue increased 68.7% year-on-year to €249.9 million. Growth was particularly strong in hybrid bonding, photonics and data-centre applications.
At its June Investor Day, BESI also increased its long-term targets. The company sees new hybrid-bonding applications in logic, memory and co-packaged optics and expects advanced packaging to account for an increasing share of future growth.
Hybrid bonding is important because it allows chips to be positioned extremely close together without relying on traditional large solder connections. This enables far more interconnections per unit of area and permits data to travel between chips faster and more efficiently.
For future HBM generations, chiplets and 3D integration, this may become essential.
We therefore increasingly regard BESI not merely as a cyclical assembly-equipment supplier but as a structural technology position within advanced packaging.
Kulicke & Soffa: much more than wire bonding
Kulicke & Soffa Industries (KLIC) is still often associated with traditional wire-bonding equipment. That remains an important part of the company, but its relevance to AI is moving towards thermo-compression bonding, advanced packaging and wafer-level bonding.
Thermo-compression bonding, commonly abbreviated TCB, is used to create extremely small and precise connections between chips. As bump pitches shrink and HBM stacks become more complex, demand for this level of precision increases.
KLIC therefore occupies an interesting position between the traditional back-end market and next-generation packaging.
Its advantage is the ability to expand into new applications from an established installed base. Its disadvantage is that exposure is less pure than at BESI and part of the company remains dependent on conventional semiconductor and consumer-electronics markets.
This creates greater cyclical volatility but also potentially more operating leverage as advanced packaging becomes a larger share of revenue.
Camtek: one of the clearest growth signals in the chain
Camtek (CAMT) earns money from something that becomes increasingly valuable in advanced packaging: identifying defects before they become extremely expensive.
In a traditional semiconductor product, a defective chip can be discarded. In a complex AI package, several expensive logic dies and HBM stacks may already have been integrated before a problem is discovered. A defect found at the end of the process can therefore destroy thousands of dollars of high-value semiconductor content.
Inspection and metrology consequently become much more economically important.
Camtek received more than $90 million in orders from leading OSATs during the first quarter, primarily for AI-related advanced-packaging applications. In June, more than $105 million of additional orders followed from a major OSAT and a leading HBM manufacturer.
Results published on August 10 confirmed that acceleration is continuing. Second-quarter revenue reached a record $133.2 million and management expects second-half 2026 revenue to be more than 30% above the first half. Third-quarter guidance implies roughly 20% sequential growth.
This is exactly the type of confirmation we want from a structural packaging winner: not simply an attractive technology narrative, but visible increases in orders, backlog and revenue.
Onto Innovation: yield becomes increasingly valuable
Onto Innovation (ONTO) also operates at the intersection of inspection, metrology and process control.
The company reported second-quarter 2026 revenue of $343.1 million, 35.3% more than a year earlier. Revenue for the first six months reached $635.1 million, an increase of more than 22%.
Its relevance to AI is particularly linked to the increasing complexity of 2.5D packaging, HBM and chiplets.
Onto's new Dragonfly G5 inspection platform has been qualified at customers in both 2.5D logic and HBM, while a leading HBM producer selected the platform for its HBM4 ramp.
The company expects the advanced-packaging market to grow by more than 30% in 2026.
The economic logic resembles Camtek. As each package becomes more expensive, every inspection step that prevents a defective product from moving further through manufacturing becomes more valuable.
Camtek versus Onto Innovation
Camtek and Onto Innovation benefit from the same structural development but offer different exposures.
Camtek currently has particularly direct order leverage to OSAT, HBM and CoWoS-like applications. Revenue can therefore accelerate quickly when customers expand capacity.
Onto has a broader process-control portfolio and combines advanced packaging with exposure to advanced logic and memory.
Investors seeking maximum direct packaging exposure may therefore prefer Camtek, while investors seeking broader exposure to increasing semiconductor process complexity obtain more diversification through Onto.
We consider both relevant.
FormFactor: every expensive chip has to be tested first
FormFactor (FORM) is a less obvious beneficiary and precisely for that reason is interesting.
The company specialises in probe cards and test solutions that electrically verify chips before they progress further through production.
This becomes increasingly important in advanced packaging. When several expensive chiplets are combined into one package, manufacturers want maximum confidence that each individual die functions correctly.
A faulty die in a conventional package is unfortunate. A faulty die discovered only after integration with an expensive GPU and multiple HBM stacks can create substantially greater financial damage.
FormFactor therefore expects test intensity to rise as advanced packaging becomes more widely adopted.
The company is not a pure packaging play, but structurally higher test intensity provides an attractive second-order exposure.
Cohu: test and handling become more complex
Cohu (COHU) also operates in semiconductor testing and handling, supplying equipment used to position, inspect and test chips.
AI and HBM raise both the value per chip and the technical requirements of testing. The amount of test content required per system can therefore increase.
Cohu is smaller and more cyclical than the clearest advanced-packaging beneficiaries. This can be a disadvantage during weak semiconductor cycles but may provide greater operating leverage during a strong investment wave.
We therefore classify Cohu as a more speculative read-through rather than a core position within the theme.
Veeco Instruments: specialised processes become more important
Veeco Instruments (VECO) supplies equipment for specialised deposition, annealing and other semiconductor processes.
Its relevance increases as packaging adopts more characteristics that previously belonged primarily to front-end wafer manufacturing.
Advanced interconnects require new materials, extremely thin layers and precise process control. An equipment supplier such as Veeco can therefore benefit without itself providing bonding equipment or OSAT services.
The exposure is less direct than at BESI, Camtek or Onto, but increasing back-end complexity expands the potential market.
Amtech Systems: small company, large leverage
Amtech Systems (ASYS) belongs to the smaller companies in this group and therefore has to be assessed differently.
At a much smaller company, one strong product programme can have a disproportionately large effect on revenue and earnings. This creates potentially greater share-price leverage when demand improves.
The reverse also applies. A smaller revenue base, greater customer concentration and less scale make results more sensitive to order delays.
Amtech should therefore not be placed on the same risk scale as Amkor, BESI or Onto. It is a speculative small-cap exposure to growing semiconductor and packaging investment.
Materials are an underestimated part of the bottleneck
Machines are not the only scarce resource. The packages themselves require increasingly advanced substrates and materials.
Unimicron Technology, Ibiden, Nan Ya PCB, Shinko Electric Industries and AT&S are important names in IC substrates. As packages grow larger and contain more connections, flatness, finer lines and thermal characteristics become increasingly critical.
ABF, an insulating material widely used in high-end substrates, is another strategically important part of the supply chain. Ajinomoto has an important position through its ABF technology.
Powertech Technology, JCET Group and Tongfu Microelectronics provide additional packaging and test capacity, with Powertech holding particular relevance to memory.
Not all of these shares are equally accessible to European or US investors, but they are important for understanding where economic scarcity is emerging.
Entegris benefits from higher materials intensity
Entegris (ENTG) supplies high-purity materials, chemicals, filtration and contamination-control solutions to the semiconductor industry.
The more complex a semiconductor becomes, the less tolerance there is for contamination or material variation. Advanced packaging also increases the number of process steps and potentially the quantity of materials and process-control content required per finished product.
Entegris is not a pure advanced-packaging play. The combination of exposure to front-end, advanced nodes, memory and packaging makes the company interesting for investors seeking broader exposure to increasing semiconductor complexity.
Ultra Clean, Advanced Energy and MKS form the hidden infrastructure layer
Ultra Clean Holdings (UCTT), Advanced Energy Industries (AEIS) and MKS Instruments (MKSI) sit another layer deeper in the supply chain.
Ultra Clean provides specialised subsystems and manufacturing solutions to semiconductor-equipment companies. Advanced Energy supplies precision power and power-conversion technologies, while MKS Instruments supplies vacuum, gas, power and photonics systems used throughout semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
These companies do not earn exclusively from packaging and their AI exposure should therefore not be exaggerated.
The important point is that virtually every new semiconductor production line consists of hundreds of specialised subsystems. When wafer capacity and packaging capacity are being expanded simultaneously, this infrastructure layer participates in the investment cycle.
The advantage is diversification. The disadvantage is that the link to any individual AI-packaging investment is less direct.
Applied Materials, Lam Research and KLA remain relevant
Applied Materials (AMAT), Lam Research (LRCX) and KLA (KLAC) should not be ignored either.
These companies are substantially larger and less pure packaging plays, but the boundary between front-end and back-end manufacturing is becoming less distinct. Processes such as deposition, etch, bonding and inspection that once primarily occurred during wafer fabrication are increasingly important in advanced packaging.
KLA benefits particularly from the need to detect defects and process variation. Applied Materials is developing technology for advanced packaging, hybrid bonding and heterogeneous integration. Lam Research can benefit from additional process steps in advanced memory and 3D integration.
Packaging may represent a smaller percentage of total revenue at these companies than at a BESI or Camtek, but the absolute market may become large enough to make a meaningful contribution to growth.
Why HBM can extend the packaging cycle
High Bandwidth Memory is an essential component of almost every powerful AI accelerator.
HBM consists of multiple memory dies stacked vertically. As HBM3E gives way to HBM4 and later generations, connection counts rise and tolerances become tighter.
This increases demand for bonding, wafer handling, inspection, metrology and testing.
The packaging cycle is therefore not dependent only on more GPUs. Each new HBM generation may also require more technical content per memory stack.
This is an important difference from a traditional volume cycle. The market can grow both because more chips are produced and because each chip requires greater equipment and process content.
Hybrid bonding may be the next major step
Hybrid bonding may be the most important technology to monitor over the longer term.
Traditional chip interconnections use microscopic solder bumps. As chips have to be positioned increasingly close together, these connections eventually become too large.
Hybrid bonding connects extremely fine copper contacts directly. This allows the distance between connections to shrink substantially and increases the amount of data that can be transferred between chips.
For 3D logic, HBM and future chiplet architectures, this may become critical.
BESI has a particularly strong position in this field, while Kulicke & Soffa and larger equipment companies are also investing in new bonding technologies.
Adoption will not proceed in a straight line. New processes must become sufficiently reliable, fast and inexpensive for volume manufacturing. If that happens, hybrid bonding could create a substantially larger equipment market than exists today.
Our ranking within the packaging supply chain
Not every company benefits in the same way.
For direct pricing power, ASE Technology Holding and Amkor Technology offer the clearest exposure. They sell the capacity that is currently becoming scarce while also benefiting from a shift towards higher-value packaging technologies.
For equipment, BE Semiconductor Industries remains one of our preferred European exposures. Kulicke & Soffa also offers opportunities, although its revenue base is broader and partly more cyclical.
For inspection and metrology, Camtek and Onto Innovation stand out. Recent order and revenue developments confirm that AI, HBM and advanced packaging are already having a material impact.
FormFactor is attractive through increasing test intensity, while Cohu provides more speculative operating leverage.
Veeco Instruments, Amtech Systems, Entegris, Ultra Clean Holdings, Advanced Energy and MKS Instruments are primarily additional or second-order exposures. They may benefit strongly if the investment cycle broadens, but their revenue is less directly tied to a single packaging technology.
Where we see the greatest potential
When combining quality, direct exposure and visible order growth, four companies stand out.
BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI) has a strong bonding position and benefits from the transition towards more complex 2.5D, 3D and hybrid-bonding architectures.
Amkor Technology (AMKR) provides direct US exposure to higher packaging volumes, greater complexity and the construction of a domestic advanced-packaging supply chain.
Camtek (CAMT) is seeing exceptionally strong order momentum from OSAT and HBM customers and benefits directly from increased inspection and metrology requirements.
Onto Innovation (ONTO) combines advanced-packaging growth with broader process-control exposure and has already achieved concrete qualifications at 2.5D and HBM customers.
Behind these companies, we consider Kulicke & Soffa and FormFactor attractive additional exposures, while names such as Cohu, Veeco and Amtech are more suitable for investors willing to accept additional volatility in exchange for potentially greater operating leverage.
What could invalidate this view
The greatest threat is excessive capacity expansion.
Semiconductor cycles have repeatedly shown that shortages ultimately trigger major investment, sometimes resulting in overcapacity several years later. If OSATs, foundries and memory companies all expand too aggressively, pricing power may eventually disappear.
Technology choices also create risk. Not every packaging architecture will win, and suppliers heavily exposed to one process may lose market share if customers choose another technology.
Timing is another important risk for equipment shares. Orders can fluctuate substantially from quarter to quarter if a major customer delays or accelerates a project by several months.
Finally, valuation matters. A structurally attractive business is not automatically an attractive stock if the market has already priced in years of future growth.
Selection within the theme is therefore more important than simply buying every advanced-packaging company.
Conclusion
The AI boom is creating a new form of semiconductor shortage and the bottleneck is increasingly shifting towards advanced packaging, bonding, inspection and testing.
In our view, this is also becoming one of the most interesting next phases of the semiconductor cycle. ASE Technology Holding and Amkor Technology possess direct pricing power, while BE Semiconductor Industries, Camtek and Onto Innovation benefit from the investment required to solve the capacity shortage.
Our preference is for companies where structural growth is already visible in orders and revenue. This makes BESI, AMKR, CAMT and ONTO the key stocks we would monitor within this new packaging cycle.
