English
â– Market view: Europe looks set for a mixed to slightly higher open. Euro Stoxx futures are around 0.2% higher, while S&P 500 futures are roughly 0.1% lower and Nasdaq 100 futures down 0.2%. Asia is providing support, with Taiwan around +1.5% and the KOSPI roughly +1.2%. Even so, this remains a thin August market with low volumes and plenty of moving parts. The underlying trend is upward, but the market is still sitting at the traffic light: NVIDIA, Marvell, Warsh, Iran and rates first need to be cleared before the light can really turn green.
â– Event risk: the core of this week remains clearing event risk. If NVIDIA, Marvell, Kevin Warsh, geopolitics and rates pass without major accidents, the market effectively gets permission to resume the existing upward trend. Until then, we see sideways trading more as consolidation than weakness.
■Iran and oil: according to Axios, Washington wants to avoid military action against Iran for now, probably until after the midterms, while increasing economic pressure and bringing as much oil as possible to market. Strikes are not ruled out if Iran attacks first. At the same time, there are rumours of an agreement around the Strait of Hormuz and oil is down another roughly 2% toward $80 after losing around 5% yesterday. That is supportive for equities, but Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister warned that US minesweepers would make good targets if they entered the region. The ball can therefore bounce the other way very quickly.
■US rates and debt: yields have edged higher, while US federal debt is now above $40 trillion. Richmond Fed President Tom Barkin has warned that a point could eventually come when investors no longer automatically buy US debt and described July’s rate decision as a close call. Ray Dalio even sees the risk of a debt crisis within a few years. Stanley Druckenmiller, meanwhile, is critical of Scott Bessent’s attempts to influence long-term yields through purchases and reserves. For us, that gets to the heart of it: you may temporarily steer yields, but the debt does not disappear.
■Debt crisis: strangely enough, does not automatically have to be bad for equities. In 2008 and during COVID we saw policymakers respond to excessive debt with even more liquidity and even more debt. Structurally that solves nothing, of course, but markets can actually rally on such measures. It is mainly a risk for later, not automatically today’s trading direction.
â– AI debt: government debt is also different from high debt among companies or households. This deserves particular attention in AI, where enormous capex increasingly requires financing. As long as the cycle continues that is not an immediate problem, but if the AI bubble ever bursts, the winners and losers will quickly become visible.
â– DEME: the top line is somewhat disappointing, but the bottom line is strong. The shares could therefore initially react lower, but we would not judge the results solely on revenue. The bottom line paints a clearly stronger picture.
â– NX Filtration: we are much more critical here. The press release presents the story beautifully, but the deeper we dig into the numbers, the more we conclude that the underlying picture is simply a mess. That does not mean management or the company is doing anything wrong; our criticism concerns the quality of the figures and how the story is presented. Retail investors in particular should look very carefully under the bonnet. We will return to this separately in much more detail.
â– EXMAR (EXM): net profit increased, but mainly because of a $25 million one-off gain on VLGC buy-backs. Revenue and EBITDA declined year-on-year and shipping and infrastructure faced difficult markets. New vessels and LNG projects do provide visibility on future growth. Attractive net profit, therefore, but a clearly more mixed underlying operating picture.
â– Siemens Energy: is working on a spin-off of its industrial unit. That could support the shares if it makes value more visible, but without further terms and valuation we would not get too far ahead of ourselves.
â– Kendrion (KENDR): H1 2026 delivered 4% revenue growth, 18% higher normalized EBITDA, a 17.5% EBITDA margin and a 26.3% ROIC. Industrial Brakes was strong and Mobility continued to improve. Good numbers, although the shares do not automatically have to rise immediately. Kendrion is becoming increasingly interesting to us and could eventually even become an acquisition candidate.
â– Wolters Kluwer and RELX: came under pressure as Google entered the legal AI market. For us, that does not change the bigger view. Both remain buy on dips: pick up pieces on weakness and then see where the ship is heading.
■Adidas and Nike: the results from Dick’s Sporting Goods, including the acquired Foot Locker operations, provide a weak read-through for sporting goods and footwear. I still regard the Foot Locker acquisition as a disastrous deal. The picture is therefore less attractive for Nike and Adidas; with Adidas, we could even watch rallies for a possible short setup.
â– Prosus: may get some support from the better Asian tone. Tencent fell around 3.5% earlier this week and Alibaba was also weak, but a stronger Asian session at least provides some breathing room today.
â– Financial stocks: if I had to take a punt, I would expect some recovery in financials as long as yields do not rise sharply and geopolitics remains calm. Not a high-conviction call, but some bottom-picking would not surprise me.
â– Unilever and Beiersdorf: defensive consumer names may attract renewed interest while investors remain uncertain about a full risk-on move. Beiersdorf in particular stands out after its sharp decline. Sometimes old economy suddenly becomes attractive when the market itself does not quite know where it wants to go.
â– Alfen: here we mainly want to see whether buyers start picking up the shares again. No reason to anticipate it; first we want evidence that genuine demand is returning.
â– X-FAB: remains a semiconductor name to watch and is, for clarity, listed in Paris. Not a major investment case at the moment, but certainly a stock that can return to the radar during selective recovery.
â– Boskalis: we still want to look at the results separately before attaching a view to them. We are therefore not going to invent a conclusion in advance.
â– NVIDIA: results are due after the close and represent one of the most important traffic lights of the week. The shares previously gained around 2.2%. Plenty of reheated scare stories are circulating, but we prefer to focus on margins, pricing power, AI demand and whether the enormous capex cycle remains intact. Those are the issues the market will actually judge tonight.
â– Marvell (MRVL): reports tomorrow and remains one of our major long-term favourites. Technically, we see possible support around the lower VWAP band. The results are especially interesting because there is also a personal call spread open; roughly another 6%-7% rise in the shares would help that position considerably.
â– AMD: gained around 5%, partly helped by a broker upgrade. That confirms renewed interest in the broader AI-infrastructure story, although we are still not convinced the entire semiconductor sector will simply continue higher today.
â– Cisco, Supermicro and NVIDIA: Cisco and Supermicro will launch rack-scale AI systems from October 2026 for NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 and HGX Rubin NVL8. Supermicro provides the servers and cooling, Cisco the networking. It once again underlines that AI is increasingly about complete racks rather than standalone accelerators.
■OpenAI: the first benchmarks for its own Jalapeño chip are notably strong. Gen 1 is said to outperform NVIDIA’s GB200/GB300 across several large models, including 1.5 to 1.9 times better performance per watt and lower latency. OpenAI also used its own AI in the chip’s design and programming. Gen 2 is already well into development and Gen 3 is taking shape. If this holds up, OpenAI is becoming serious as a chip developer as well.
â– D-Wave Quantum (QBTS): the CFO is resigning. Particularly for young, capital-intensive technology companies, we generally do not see the departure of the top finance executive as a positive signal. It does not have to mean anything serious, but the antennae should go up a little further.
â– Silver: is up around 0.4% near $68.90, keeping it right inside our $68-$70 zone. Technically, it now becomes interesting to see whether silver can break through or stalls again.
â– Gold: is slightly lower near $4,633. From the options market, a possible push toward roughly $5,000 into December remains interesting. No guarantee, but the scenario remains on the table.
■Currencies: EUR/USD is around 1.1660. The Australian dollar is outperforming after stronger-than-expected inflation remained above the RBA’s 2%-3% target range. It is not a major theme, but another reminder that the global inflation and rates debate is far from over.
â– Personal option positions: there is almost nothing open at the moment and I am actually happy with that. The last round did not go well, and that is simply part of it. The December gold call spread remains nicely profitable and the Marvell call spread is still slightly underwater. There is no need to force anything right now; perhaps another look later in the day.
â– Crypto-related stocks: Robinhood gained around 8%, Coinbase 4% and Circle roughly 5%. That matters because crypto equities had previously lagged while Bitcoin kept rising. That negative divergence has therefore largely disappeared for now. Coinbase has reached what we see as an important support line, while I continue to see substantial long-term potential in Circle, although with extreme volatility.
â– Bitcoin: is around $79,000. The rise has become less explosive, but the price is holding up reasonably well for now. It remains a market, however, where resistance can suddenly appear right in front of you.
â– Investment view: we expect a mixed to slightly higher open, but conviction remains limited. Asia helps, oil is falling and the underlying trend remains upward, but NVIDIA, Marvell, Warsh, Iran, rates and the debt market can quickly change the picture. September is also getting closer, historically often a difficult month for equities. Clearing event risk therefore remains the key issue: if this week passes without major accidents, that may effectively give the market permission to resume the upward trend. Until then, it remains a thin August market sitting at the traffic light: engine running, but still waiting for green.
