â–  Wall Street: gaf opnieuw weinig duidelijke richting mee.
Juist daar willen we zien of kopers opnieuw tevoorschijn komen.

English

â–  European markets: the picture has clearly improved during the morning. Initially the glass looked mainly half empty, but it is now starting to look somewhat more half full again. Euro Stoxx futures are up around 0.3%, and we therefore now expect a mixed to slightly higher European start. It remains an erratic market, sometimes a real pinball machine, but above all it is a remarkably resilient market that continues to absorb negative news very well.
â–  Wall Street: once again provided little clear direction. The S&P 500 lost around 0.3% and semiconductor stocks were particularly weak, but there was no real panic. It was mainly another case of money rotating between sectors. Despite all kinds of negative headlines, the broader market still refuses to really fall apart.
â–  US futures: have strengthened clearly during the morning. S&P 500 futures are up around 0.2% and Nasdaq 100 futures around 0.5%. That supports the European opening picture and once again shows how quickly sentiment can turn in this market. A few hours ago the glass looked half empty; now it is already somewhat more half full.
â–  Iran and China: Scott Bessent has announced tough sanctions against Iran, but markets are already looking ahead to how those measures will ultimately be implemented. China remains the problem because Beijing buys Iranian oil and would therefore also be hit if Washington applies maximum pressure. There is already speculation that the measures will be fine-tuned or that China could receive some room through a side deal. One moment the market sees only the problem, a few hours later it is already looking for the possible exit.
â–  US rates: remain one of the most important variables. The US 10-year yield is virtually unchanged around 4.71%. All kinds of ideas are being discussed to bring long-term rates down, but ultimately this is mainly about confidence: does the bond market believe the story? At the same time, the pain threshold keeps moving higher. First 4% was frightening, then 4.5%, and now 5% almost looks like the new magic level. Dealers and traders indicate that institutional investors could actually develop appetite when effective yields approach 5%. That does not mean equities would celebrate it, but 5% does not automatically have to mean disaster either.
■ Jackson Hole: becomes important later this week because analysts expect Fed Chair Kevin Warsh may strike a different tone. Warsh is not a fan of extensive forward guidance, but the bond market is demanding greater clarity. His view on inflation and especially the Fed’s reaction function will matter: not only what the next rate move will be, but what needs to happen before the Fed actually acts.
â–  German economy: grew by 0.3% in the second quarter compared with the previous quarter, slightly better than the earlier estimate of 0.2%. That fits with tentative signs that Germany may be starting to climb out of its slump, following better investor sentiment and some improvement in corporate earnings and export orders. For the direction of European equities today, however, we see this mainly as neutral: better than expected, but not strong enough on its own to give markets a clear direction.
â–  European and Japanese rates: provide little new stress today. The German 10-year yield is around 3.25% and the Japanese 10-year around 2.89%. These remain substantial levels, but as long as there is no fresh acceleration higher, equities do not necessarily have to lose sleep over them today.
â–  Asian markets: had a relatively quiet session and strengthened further toward the end. Taiwan is even up around 0.9%, helping sentiment particularly around semiconductors. Asia remains mixed overall, but the picture has clearly improved. You still cannot make a great soup out of it, but it tastes a little better now.
■ AEX: remains one of the best examples for us of how resilient this market is. Since late 2022, the index has been in a clear rising trend and around 940 we see a first major support zone on the longer-term chart. The AEX is now trading well above its average rising channel. Previous times this happened, a correction often followed eventually, but this time the index may actually be settling onto a higher plateau above that channel. It is also noticeable how well many underlying AEX stocks continue to absorb negative news. A substantial correction is absolutely possible and technically there is room for it, but a correction is not yet a bear market. Cliché or not: as long as the broader trend remains intact, dips remain buying opportunities for us.
â–  Oil: is down around 1% and that can actually provide some support for equities today. What remains striking is that crude is not surging despite Iran, sanctions and all the uncertainty surrounding China. The oil market therefore does not currently appear to be pricing in maximum geopolitical escalation. One headline can obviously turn the entire story around instantly.
â–  Gold and silver: are slightly lower following the strong rally of recent weeks. Silver has virtually touched the previously discussed $69-$70 area and some profit-taking is therefore hardly surprising. Gold is also stepping back. For us, that does not change the broader positive gold story; profit-taking is simply part of a strong trend.
â–  Currencies: EUR/USD is trading around 1.1650 and USD/JPY around 159.3. We take no pronounced bullish or bearish signal from either today. The currency market is therefore providing equities with little additional direction overall.
■ OpenAI: Sam Altman says everyone has been too ambitious about how quickly AI will transform the economy and society. Technology can advance extremely quickly, but the economy has enormous inertia and companies and consumers adapt much more slowly, according to Altman. At the same time, AI has not yet had its true “iPhone moment.” Much of the technology already exists, but the product and especially the interface that make AI intuitive for almost everyone still need to be discovered. That does not make the big AI story smaller; it may simply take longer before the true mass economic breakthrough arrives.
â–  Semiconductor sector: may get some breathing room after the weak session on Wall Street. The options market is highlighting support areas, Taiwan is higher and Nasdaq 100 futures have strengthened. Chinese imports of lithography equipment also rose 7% in July, the second consecutive monthly increase. Fundamentally, demand for semiconductor equipment therefore remains alive, but at the same time investors are reducing technology exposure ahead of important earnings. Precisely because a substantial amount of negativity may already be reflected in prices, a contrarian move could develop if support holds. First we want to see whether buyers actually show up.
â–  Memory: remains an important part of the semiconductor story. Higher memory prices are feeding further through servers and other AI hardware. That benefits strong memory producers, but at the same time raises costs for companies further down the chain. That creates an interesting tension: AI demand remains strong, but somebody ultimately has to pay those higher component costs.
■ Arcadis (ARCAD): has won the Amsterdam IJburglaan project together with Witteveen+Bos. The contract runs for eleven years and is worth around €15 million. Positive news and another sign that the order flow remains healthy, but not large enough on its own to completely change the investment case for Arcadis.
■ Banqup (BANQ): saw first-half revenue rise to €26.5 million from €25 million a year earlier, while the EBITDA loss improved to €6.1 million from €7.3 million negative. Cash stands at around €5 million. The direction is improving, but the company is still loss-making and the cash buffer is not huge. First we want to see whether that improvement really continues.
â–  CVC Capital Partners (CVC): is being mentioned together with EQT and Bain as a potential bidder for a Siemens Energy division. That could become interesting if an actual bid follows, but as long as the parties are merely considering a transaction, we are not turning it into a major share-price story.
â–  ING Groep (INGA): Alexandra Reich is resigning from the supervisory board of SPVY, where she had served since April 2023. For ING itself, we see this as neutral news and not something that should determine the direction of the shares today.
â–  Lakefront (LKFT): has received FDA Orphan Drug Designation for gamgertamig in pemphigus. That is positive for the development programme and can provide benefits during the further regulatory process. It remains biotech, of course: clinical development and actual results ultimately have to prove the value.
â–  Melexis (MELE): has signed a master purchase agreement with BYD. That is more concrete than the earlier description of Melexis becoming almost a preferred supplier and could certainly put some fire under the share price. It gives Melexis a clearer commercial position with BYD, but we also regularly see strong Melexis rallies run into resistance at higher levels. Positive news, therefore, but no reason to assume every resistance level has suddenly disappeared.
â–  Mistral AI and ASML (ASML): French Mistral AI, in which ASML holds around 11% according to the current information, continues to win new orders and deals in Saudi Arabia. That will probably not determine whether ASML trades one percent higher or lower today, but over the longer term it is another favourable development. Mistral is gaining more commercial traction and ASML is participating through its stake.
■ Alfen (ALFEN): becomes interesting to follow again after yesterday’s sharp decline. Between roughly €10 and €12, support appears to keep emerging and the question is whether this dip will once again be bought. We did not think the results were particularly bad. Perhaps someone somewhere knows more, that is always possible, but we simply do not know. Alfen is not a favourite, but it is a typical trading stock where a sharp dip toward support can become interesting for a move higher.
â–  CSG: reported information that looked fine to us in itself, but we are still not going to do anything with the shares. Scepticism remains among several analysts about the way CSG handles its accounting. Perhaps it eventually turns out that there is nothing wrong at all, but as long as that doubt hangs over the stock, there is no reason for us to get involved.
■ Financial stocks: become interesting to watch if today’s better market tone continues. The main question is whether we start seeing some bottom-picking again. We are not going to assume in advance that banks and other financial names therefore automatically have to rise; first we want to see whether the money actually starts flowing in that direction.
■ Philips (PHIA): is facing increasingly visible competition in Europe from Chinese players including Mindray and United Imaging. We see that as operationally more important than the green bond Philips is issuing. The €650 million bond, carrying a 4% coupon, was around 2.7 times oversubscribed and should therefore be placed without much trouble. The financing news is neutral, but Chinese competition is something to watch closely for market share and margins.
â–  Volkswagen: CEO Oliver Blume is facing angry workers in Wolfsburg over plans to cut around 100,000 jobs. That makes clear just how significant the restructuring could become and how much disruption may still lie ahead. The company is set to be reshaped substantially and although the shares appear to be forming a better technical base, we remain genuinely cautious. First we want to see what is actually announced, how executable the plans are and what they ultimately deliver.
■ Sipef: remains technically interesting as long as the area around €100 holds. That is precisely where we want to see whether buyers start appearing again. If €100 remains intact, we believe there could once again be room toward €110 and potentially €120. The support obviously has to prove itself first; we are not going to anticipate a move that has not happened yet.
â–  TomTom (TOM2): has received an order from Vinci subsidiary Cofiroute to improve its operations. Financial terms were not disclosed. It is positive that TomTom has secured another commercial contract, but without amounts or margin information we simply cannot know how large the financial contribution will be.
â–  CMB.TECH (CMBT): reports results on August 27. Reuters/LSEG says analysts on average expect revenue of around $585.9 million, up more than 51% year-on-year, and earnings of $0.85 per share. The average analyst rating is buy, with four buy/strong buy recommendations and no hold or sell ratings, while the average price target is around $21 versus a last close of $18.17. Those are Reuters/LSEG expectations, not our own estimates. Our view is that CMB.TECH remains exactly the kind of stock where substantial dips can repeatedly create opportunities. With earnings just ahead, we first want to see whether the company can actually live up to those fairly strong expectations.
■ Air France-KLM (AF): has been upgraded to hold by Kepler Cheuvreux, while the price target remains €11.50. That is a small improvement in the recommendation, but because the price target does not move higher, we do not see it as a powerful new bullish call.
■ Argenx (ARGX): has been cut to hold by Deutsche Bank, while the price target is actually raised to €925 from €900. That is an interestingly mixed signal: the valuation estimate rises slightly, but the recommendation becomes more cautious. In other words, the broker still sees value but apparently also believes a lot of good news is already reflected in the price.
■ Solvay (SOLB): has been upgraded to buy by Degroof, with the price target raised to €109 from €96.70. That is a clearly positive broker update and could provide additional support for the shares.
■ Tubize (TUB): has been upgraded to buy by Degroof with a €286 price target. That is positive for the shares and indirectly interesting because of the exposure to UCB. It remains a broker recommendation, however, and not our own Investment view.
â–  NVIDIA: remains one of the most important stocks for later this week. Server prices for certain customers are being raised by around 15%, mainly because components and especially memory have become more expensive. The interesting point is that those higher selling prices are only starting now and therefore are not yet fully reflected in the quarter NVIDIA is reporting. Markets may therefore wonder whether higher costs have already weighed on margins while compensation through higher selling prices only arrives later. In the results, we want to see three things in particular: what happens to margins, how strong is growth and does the enormous AI investment cycle continue? For now, that last part still looks solid. We are not saying margins will disappoint and we are not saying investors will automatically panic over somewhat softer numbers; macro currently determines at least as much of the direction. Over the longer term, NVIDIA remains firmly in pole position for us.
â–  Crypto-related stocks: continue to react much more unevenly than Bitcoin itself. Strategy, for example, is only a few percent higher instead of delivering another enormous run-up like we have seen more often recently. That does not have to mean anything negative yet, but if Bitcoin keeps accelerating we ultimately want to see the equities surrounding crypto confirm that move more broadly. If they do not, a divergence develops that deserves serious attention.
â–  Bitcoin: is now around $80,700 and up roughly 2%. The cryptocurrency simply continues to race higher. Momentum has strengthened further following the White House visit by prominent figures from the crypto industry. There is no need to make the story more complicated than it is right now: the trend is higher. We do, however, keep watching whether Bitcoin is beginning to run too far ahead of the rest of the crypto market.
â–  Investment view: the picture has clearly improved during the morning. Euro Stoxx futures are up around 0.3%, S&P 500 futures around 0.2%, Nasdaq 100 futures approximately 0.5%, Taiwan is up 0.9% and oil is down around 1%. German growth was slightly stronger than previously estimated, although we see that mainly as neutral for market direction. A mixed to slightly higher European start therefore now looks most logical. At the same time, this remains a pinball machine: Iran and China are not resolved, US long-term rates remain important, investors are trimming technology exposure ahead of major earnings and NVIDIA can turn the entire semiconductor sector upside down later this week. August and September can also be sticky months, with September known for higher volatility, while the US midterms will increasingly come into view further ahead. But the most important signal for now remains the resilience. This market is getting plenty of bad news thrown at it and still refuses to fall over. For us, the long-term trend remains higher while the short term remains sticky. So there is no need to turn every dip into a bear market, but there is equally no reason to chase every green future. First see what the market actually does.
