Conclusie

NVIDIA is playing bank in the Anthropic deal: bullish, but circularity is becoming a bigger risk

No time to read the full article? Use the five bullets below for the key points.
■ Anthropic is signing a $35 billion cloud deal with Lambda, a cloud company in which NVIDIA has invested.
■ Lambda provides the compute, runs on NVIDIA systems and is linked to data-center capacity where NVIDIA also plays a role.
■ NVIDIA is therefore not only a chip supplier, but also a financier, capacity organizer and ecosystem player.
■ We remain bullish on NVIDIA because demand for AI compute remains strong and the NVIDIA platform is hard to replace.
■ The risk is that one financing deal too many shifts the debate from AI scarcity to circular demand.

Anthropic is signing a $35 billion cloud deal with Lambda. Lambda provides the compute, uses NVIDIA systems and is itself a company in which NVIDIA has invested. At the same time, NVIDIA also plays a role around the underlying data-center capacity, including a large Texas project from Hut 8.

That is the news behind the news. NVIDIA is not only selling chips to the AI market. It is also helping finance the chain in which those chips are deployed.

Investment view

Our Investment view on NVIDIA remains bullish, but with a clearly larger risk. NVIDIA remains the dominant name in AI infrastructure. Demand for compute is strong, its position in accelerators is powerful and the ecosystem around CUDA, networking and rack-scale AI remains difficult to replace.

The new layer is circularity. NVIDIA sells the chips, invests in cloud companies, helps secure capacity and therefore appears in several places within the same chain. That is strategically strong as long as end demand continues to grow, but it makes the quality of revenue more vulnerable to criticism.

In a market with scarce AI capacity, this model can work. NVIDIA accelerates compute buildout, keeps customers closer to its platform and helps cloud providers scale faster. Whoever provides chips, software, networking, architecture and financing largely shapes how the market is built.

But playing bank has a limit. The more deals rely on NVIDIA financing, NVIDIA-backed cloud providers or NVIDIA-secured capacity, the faster investors will ask how much of the growth is fully organic. That does not break the bull case, but it does raise the bar.

For us, NVIDIA remains a core AI name. The case has simply become less clean. The market will look not only at revenue growth, but also at who finances that growth and how strong the final end demand really is.

What the Anthropic deal shows

The Anthropic-Lambda deal shows how broadly NVIDIA now sits across the AI chain. Anthropic rents compute. Lambda provides that capacity. The systems run on NVIDIA hardware. NVIDIA has invested in Lambda and also plays a role on the data-center side.

The model used to be simpler: customer buys chips, NVIDIA delivers, revenue rises. Now chip demand, cloud capacity, leases, investments and customer contracts increasingly overlap.

That is powerful because it brings capacity online faster. But it also makes it less clear where real end demand starts and where NVIDIA’s own support ends.

Why this can still be positive

NVIDIA is not financing an empty market. AI capacity is scarce, models are getting larger, inference is growing and major AI customers need huge amounts of compute.

That means playing bank can create value for now. NVIDIA helps bring capacity online faster and prevents customers from moving to alternative platforms. This strengthens the lock-in around its chips, software and network architecture.

As long as the compute is ultimately used by real customers, with real workloads and real cash flows, the strategy remains strong.

Where the risk sits

The risk is not one transaction, but the accumulation. One deal can be explained. Two deals as well. But if more large contracts rely on NVIDIA financing or NVIDIA-backed capacity, circularity becomes the central debate.

Then the question is no longer only how many chips NVIDIA sells. It becomes a question about the quality of the demand behind those chips.

The weak spots are neoclouds, large lease obligations and AI customers buying huge amounts of compute before their own cash flows are fully proven. If pressure appears there, the narrative can shift quickly.

Risks

The first risk is circularity: NVIDIA helps finance the chain that then uses NVIDIA hardware.

The second risk is credit quality: neoclouds and AI customers take on large obligations while their business models are still developing.

The third risk is concentration: much of the growth depends on a limited group of AI customers, cloud providers and data-center projects.

The fourth risk is valuation: NVIDIA remains strong, but the market already prices in a lot of perfection.

The fifth risk is perception: even if the deals make economic sense, investors may start to see NVIDIA as financing its own demand.

Conclusion

NVIDIA remains the strongest name in AI infrastructure. The bull case remains intact.

But the Anthropic deal shows that NVIDIA is increasingly playing bank for the chain that buys, rents and resells its chips. That accelerates the AI rollout, but also makes the market more circular.

As long as end demand remains strong, this works in NVIDIA’s favor. If there is one financing deal too many, circularity can become the biggest risk in the stock.
