■ Valuta: EUR/USD staat rond 1,1630.
â–  Amerikaanse software: software was gisteren sowieso ijzersterk.

English

â–  Europe / opening picture: the starting point for European markets is cautiously positive. Wall Street staged a strong rally yesterday, Asian markets are convincingly green this morning and European futures are also fractionally firmer. Europe has actually been holding up reasonably well lately, even though trading often feels sticky, dull and frustrating. One day higher, the next lower again, but underneath the surface the picture remains reasonable and Germany in particular is clearly beginning to come back. Europe also remains relatively cheap compared with Wall Street. We therefore expect a mixed to somewhat higher start, although with US payrolls due later today it could easily become another session of waiting in the hammock afterwards.
■ SPX / Wall Street: yesterday was technically important. The S&P 500 spent several days unable to break resistance, finally pushed through it and then accelerated higher. The key this afternoon is therefore whether that break holds. If payrolls do not cause a major disruption, oil does not rise sharply and yields remain calm, the SPX could try to move higher again within the existing trading range. We continue to stress that this is, for now, a positive break within the range and not evidence that an entirely new structural breakout has already begun. The broader market supported the move: the S&P 500 gained 1.06%, the Dow 1.18% and the Nasdaq 100 1.16%. Fundamentally, the backdrop remains strong, with Q2 S&P 500 earnings growth tracking toward almost 32% versus roughly 23% expected beforehand, while 86% of reporting companies have beaten estimates. AI infrastructure is also expected to account for almost 60% of the index’s earnings growth.
■ US futures / Asia: yesterday’s rally is being held reasonably well this morning. S&P 500 futures are up around 0.1% and Nasdaq 100 futures roughly 0.3%. Asia is equally strong, with the Hang Seng around 2% higher and the KOSPI also close to +2%. Other regional markets are performing well too. That provides Europe with a tailwind and could offer renewed support to technology and semiconductors. As long as US data do not cause a major shock this afternoon, this remains a positive factor.
■ Payrolls / Fed Waller / inflation: US payrolls are due today and the market obviously has to get through them first. We do question, however, whether those employment figures will really play the leading role. Fed Governor Christopher Waller said yesterday that the Fed may not need to raise rates further if upcoming inflation figures do not show another acceleration. Markets interpreted that as clearly dovish. Payrolls and especially wage growth can create substantial volatility this afternoon, but our view is that investors will probably return fairly quickly to CPI, PPI, oil and yields. For the Fed’s true direction, inflation appears more important than a single payroll report.
■ US macro / rates: the US economy does not look weak at all. The ISM Services index rose to 55.4, the highest level in six months, while initial claims were around 206,000. At the same time, the prices-paid component jumped to 72.6, its highest level in four years. That is exactly the dilemma: strong growth supports earnings, but excessive price pressure can push yields higher again. Christopher Waller’s comments did provide some relief yesterday. The US 10-year yield is around 4.76% and therefore back below 4.8%. That is hardly spectacular, but in this market every small decline in yields is being grabbed almost like a lifeline. The German 10-year is around 3.35% and some pressure is also coming out of long-term Japanese yields.
â–  Bessent / bonds: Scott Bessent also continues to hold what we see as a joker in his back pocket. Ahead of the midterms, a major US bond-buyback program could provide additional support to the bond market and push yields lower. This is explicitly a scenario rather than confirmed policy, but if such a program were deployed it could temporarily provide additional support to both bonds and risk assets.
â–  Oil / Hormuz: oil is currently around 0.4% higher and remains highly volatile. Our longer-term view is still that oil is ultimately more likely to trend lower than structurally higher, because extremely high prices eventually cause demand destruction: the economy slows and oil demand subsequently falls. The real danger lies in the headline you do not want to see: a tanker being seriously hit in the Strait of Hormuz, leaking oil, forcing the route to close and potentially causing an environmental disaster. That could change the entire market picture in one blow. As long as that does not happen and oil does not surge, the damage to equities is probably manageable.
â–  FX: EUR/USD is around 1.1630. The question remains whether there has once again been official or verbal intervention in the yen. That keeps USD/JPY vulnerable to sudden moves.
â–  Crypto / Bitcoin: yesterday was a genuine race higher. Bitcoin is around $81,000 and Strategy gained roughly 17% as a direct leveraged play on that move. The strength is obvious, but the question remains whether this genuinely marks the start of a new major uptrend or simply another powerful move within the familiar flip-flop market. We first want to see whether those gains hold.
â–  Gold / silver: both gold and silver are mixed this morning following the earlier rally. Our longer-term view on gold remains unchanged: we still see room for higher levels into year-end if long-term yields continue to settle. In silver, the $70 area remains the key technical level for us. If silver breaks convincingly above it, the move could become much more aggressive. Anyone who genuinely wants to speculate could then consider a far out-of-the-money call or call spread on a silver ETF. That is explicitly speculative. A major Bessent bond-buyback program could produce a very unusual and potentially explosive move in silver.
â–  Physical AI / chips: we continue to believe that we are only at the start of a much bigger development. AI will ultimately not only be about data centers and software, but also robotics, autonomous systems and physical AI. What sounds like science fiction today could be completely normal in five or ten years. People were once afraid of locomotives because they travelled too fast; eventually horses and carts simply disappeared from the streets. Of course the AI hype will eventually hit a wall, we still do not know who the ultimate winners will be and there is substantial financing outside traditional balance-sheet structures. But for now investment remains extremely strong and we see few signs that this evolution is already nearing its end.
â–  European software / publishers: the exceptionally strong software move on Wall Street could again provide a positive read-through for Europe. Wolters Kluwer and RELX remain fallen quality names that are increasingly viewed as software- and data-like businesses. We see both mainly as fallen angels where buying on dips in small positions is more attractive than chasing a sudden rally. If US software strength continues, these names could again benefit.
â–  European semiconductors / HTSI: if European chip stocks refuse to move for a few days, that absolutely does not mean the industry is suddenly finished. Quite the opposite. Investment in AI, infrastructure and specialised parts of the semiconductor supply chain remains very large. HTSI is interesting in that respect as a valuation signal: this specialised chip-testing company is heading for a Taiwan listing at a very high, potentially record-like valuation. That shows investors remain willing to pay substantial prices for specialised companies in the testing and interface chain. This could ultimately influence comparable listed companies as well. We still want to identify one European name and several US names that could benefit, but we are not going to invent them in advance.
â–  Volkswagen: is firmly in focus today and is now trading around 7% higher before the open. The group is coming with a very substantial restructuring plan, with talk of around 50,000 jobs potentially disappearing over time and possibly further measures. There have also been longstanding reports that parts of production facilities could be made available to defence-related companies. The key point is that this restructuring is coming from a position of weakness rather than strength. Much of the story has already leaked and been pre-positioned, meaning the formal announcement itself may prove less surprising. The 7% pre-market rally does show that speculators are clearly picking up the story. The shares appear to have found some technical support and perhaps a floor, but we still think it is far too early to buy Volkswagen on that basis. Fundamentally, we first need to see whether the restructuring genuinely cuts the cost base substantially, makes the organisation more efficient and improves structural profitability.
â–  Bayer: remains one of the more interesting German recovery stories for us. The recent analyst meeting presented a better story and the market appears willing to look again at what may still be possible fundamentally. For us, attractive presentations alone are not enough; the question is whether better growth, margins and cash flow are actually delivered. The stock has therefore regained some fundamental life, but execution remains decisive.
â–  Deutsche Telekom: is attracting attention after activist Elliott took a stake. That can encourage speculation around strategy, capital allocation, structure and shareholder value. The fact that an activist is involved can by itself cause investors to reassess the valuation. That currently makes Deutsche Telekom more than simply a defensive telecom stock.
■ HUGO BOSS / Ströer: HUGO BOSS will leave the MDAX and move to the SDAX effective September 21, while Ströer will be promoted to the MDAX. HUGO BOSS may potentially be taken over, but that alone is not a reason for us to buy the shares. The index downgrade now adds another technical negative, as index-tracking funds could create additional selling pressure around the effective date. Ströer, by contrast, could see a small technical upward effect as MDAX trackers are required to add the stock.
â–  Prosus / Alibaba: the strong Chinese technology market could again support both names today, but the investment cases are different. For Prosus, the relevant read-through is explicitly Tencent. If Hong Kong remains strong, Prosus could therefore be picked up technically again. Alibaba is the direct China-tech case and could also benefit if the Hang Seng holds its strength and payrolls do not create a major shock this afternoon. Prosus and Alibaba may therefore benefit from the same sentiment, but through entirely different exposures.
■ US megacaps: yesterday’s strength was broad. Meta and Microsoft gained more than 2%, while Alphabet, Apple and Amazon closed more than 1% higher. That matters because it shows the rally was not resting on just one or two market leaders but was broadly supported by large technology companies.
■ Broadcom / NVIDIA: Broadcom fell around 2.7%, but we do not see that as evidence that the underlying case is deteriorating. In our view, the numbers were actually very strong; the share-price reaction was mainly held back by an outlook slightly below market expectations. We missed a large part of Broadcom’s enormous rally at the time because we chose NVIDIA among other names, but that does not change the current view. Broadcom can fall and still remain a good stock. NVIDIA gained around 2% yesterday and remains one of the clearest names in the AI investment cycle. This is exactly why we would rather look for opportunities in the Broadcoms and NVIDIAs of the world than chase difficult hype stocks.
â–  Tesla: jumped around 5.4% and remains a genuine swing stock. Technically, Tesla is still trapped between several VWAP lines. If the shares break convincingly through them or that resistance begins to weaken, another rally could develop. Whether we are already at that point is something we simply need to watch.
â–  US software: software as a whole was exceptionally strong yesterday. Palantir gained more than 7%, ServiceNow more than 6%, Thomson Reuters more than 5%, Atlassian more than 4%, while Workday, Adobe, Datadog and Salesforce were also strong. That confirms that the AI trade is continuing to broaden from chips and infrastructure toward software that actually deploys AI within businesses.
â–  Snowflake: jumped around 16% and finally received the reward we had been waiting for. We have repeatedly pointed out that Snowflake benefits from AI and also works with NVIDIA. The stock was almost unstoppable yesterday, although it did come off the highs. The core argument remains that AI is not only about hardware, but increasingly about data, software and actually putting that infrastructure to work.
â–  Zscaler: reported after the close and initially moved higher before falling back. Underlying, we thought the results were strong. The price reaction appears mainly technical: the shares had already risen substantially before the results and are running into resistance. This is exactly the type of situation where good fundamentals do not automatically mean the stock can immediately continue higher. We will return to this in more detail.
â–  Oracle: deliberately gets its own place. Our view is that Oracle has structured its AI business model in such a way that other parties carry a meaningful part of the financial risk surrounding the huge investment cycle. Oracle itself has substantial debt and, according to our input, its credit quality sits only around one notch above junk, but Larry Ellison appears to be organising cleverly who ultimately pulls the chestnuts out of the fire. As long as sentiment remains constructive and certain technical support levels hold, we still see room toward roughly $190.
â–  Lululemon: the results simply were not good enough and this remains the kind of hype stock that can rise enormously first and then fall very hard. We are doing nothing with it. The stock mainly serves as a contrast with companies such as Broadcom: we would rather own quality that we can continue to assess fundamentally than chase a difficult story where valuation can swing wildly.
â–  Circle: remains an interesting long-term stablecoin case for us. This stock can be extremely volatile. It could theoretically fall 80% and we could still believe it may double again within a few years. That does not make such a decline irrelevant, but it does mean that the structural size of the stablecoin opportunity matters much more to us than one interim share-price move.
â–  Robinhood: looks expensive to us, but almost every dip continues to attract buyers. Robinhood is also moving increasingly beyond crypto and toward a broad financial platform covering trading, investing, new products and prediction markets. The question is therefore increasingly whether Robinhood should still be viewed as a pure crypto stock at all. The valuation is demanding, but the price action continues to show that investors are willing to buy weakness.
â–  Coinbase: is launching perpetual futures on equities, probably synthetic products, once again showing that the company is increasingly trying to become a more conventional broker and broader financial platform. Coinbase is also becoming more institutional. If that expansion succeeds, it could become fundamentally important, but competition is intense and prediction markets are another area where everyone is fighting for part of the same opportunity. One notable feature remains that dips in Coinbase continue to attract buyers.
â–  Investment view: the starting point for Europe is cautiously positive this morning. The SPX finally broke through resistance yesterday and accelerated afterwards, US futures are holding those gains, Asia is strong and the US 10-year yield back below 4.8% is providing the market with a small but important lifeline. Volkswagen is up around 7% before the open and shows that individual event-driven moves are also emerging in Europe. At the same time, we do not want to pretend everything is suddenly solved. Payrolls can create plenty of noise this afternoon, but we think markets will subsequently return their attention to Fed Governor Christopher Waller, inflation, yields and oil. If payrolls do not cause a major disruption, oil does not surge and yields remain calm, markets could grind higher again within the trading range. But this remains a flip-flop market: watch carefully, stay cautious and on dips we would rather buy quality than run after difficult hype stocks.
