Investment view

ASML: kortetermijnbeeld onzeker, langetermijncase blijft zeer sterk

â–  extreem nauwkeurige waferpositionering;
â–  geavanceerde optische systemen;
â–  snelle en stabiele lichtbronnen;
â–  software die afwijkingen tijdens het proces corrigeert;
â–  integratie met metrologie en inspectie;

â–  lagere prijzen te bieden;
â–  gebruik te maken van staatsfinanciering;
â–  langdurige servicecontracten aan binnenlandse klanten te geven;
â–  politieke voorkeur voor lokale apparatuur te benutten;

Lam Research

â–  nieuwe berichten over Chinese technologie;
â–  verdere aanscherping van exportregels;
â–  veranderende investeringsplannen bij chipproducenten;
â–  winstnemingen na eerdere koersstijgingen;

â–  meer capaciteit bij TSMC, Samsung en Intel;
â–  hogere lithografie-intensiteit per geavanceerde node;
â–  groei van de EUV-installed base;
â–  service- en upgrade-inkomsten;

Introduction

ASML and several U.S. chip-equipment stocks are under pressure following a report by The Information about the production of a Chinese immersion-DUV lithography machine. According to the report, Shanghai Yuliangsheng Technology has begun limited commercial production, with initial deliveries intended for domestic chipmakers including SMIC, Hua Hong Semiconductor and CXMT.

The news is affecting the entire chip-equipment market. Investors are concerned not only that China may eventually need fewer ASML systems, but also that localization may expand into etching, deposition, inspection and other essential stages of semiconductor production.

That concern is understandable. China has major strategic and financial interests in developing a domestic semiconductor supply chain and is making measurable progress.

The market reaction, however, overlooks a critical distinction: producing a small number of machines is different from manufacturing chips reliably for years at competitive cost.

ASML’s true technological advantage does not lie merely in the concept of lithography. It lies in the complete combination of precision, speed, software, process control and support required to place billions of transistors reproducibly on a wafer.

Investment view

ASML: uncertain short-term price action, exceptionally strong long-term case

Our long-term Investment view on ASML is strongly positive. The short-term share-price outlook is more uncertain.

The report by The Information is serious and should not be dismissed. A domestic Chinese immersion-DUV system is an important technological milestone and may eventually replace part of the demand for older Western equipment.

That does not mean China now has an equivalent alternative to ASML.

Initial Chinese production targets remain small. Based on the supplied information, the target is approximately five machines in 2026 and twenty in 2027. By comparison, ASML previously shipped 131 immersion-DUV systems in a single year. Volumes do not tell the whole story, but they show that China remains at the beginning of industrial scaling.

Chipmakers also do not immediately place a new machine into their most important production lines. Systems must first be tested, calibrated and integrated with other manufacturing steps over many months. Only then will it become clear whether they provide enough uptime and yield to be economically attractive.

We expect the Chinese development to continue influencing sentiment around ASML. Export restrictions and the expected decline in China’s share of revenue may also create volatility. China is expected to account for approximately 20% of ASML’s 2026 revenue, largely through permitted sales of less advanced DUV systems.

The outlook for the coming years remains much stronger. ASML is the only commercial supplier of EUV systems, while global investment in AI processors and advanced memory requires more of this technology. The company recently raised its 2026 revenue outlook to €43 billion–€45 billion and plans to expand EUV and DUV production capacity in response to strong demand.

We therefore believe ASML shares could double over the coming years. This is not a short-term target, but an achievable outcome if AI investment continues, EUV capacity expands and High-NA EUV becomes the next standard for the most advanced chips.

What China has actually achieved

Shanghai Yuliangsheng Technology has reportedly begun production of a domestic immersion-DUV system primarily targeting manufacturing technology around 28 nanometers. The company is connected to the wider Huawei and SiCarrier ecosystem.

This is meaningful progress. Immersion DUV is substantially more complex than dry DUV lithography and requires extremely precise control of optics, motion, light sources and wafer positioning.

SMIC had already been testing a Chinese immersion-DUV machine developed by Yuliangsheng, according to earlier reporting. The system was compared with ASML’s NXT:1950i, a machine introduced around 2008 for 32-nanometer production in a single exposure.

With multipatterning, such a system can theoretically be used for smaller nodes. The pattern is then built through multiple process steps. This enables further scaling, but also increases complexity and cost.

The Chinese machine does not need to match ASML immediately to have strategic value. For mature nodes, power semiconductors, microcontrollers and industrial applications, a less efficient machine may still be useful, especially if state support offsets higher manufacturing costs.

Why qualification matters more than initial production

The term mass production may create the impression that the machine is already producing chips at scale. That is not necessarily what it means in this context.

For semiconductor equipment, production first means building the systems. A lengthy testing and qualification process then begins at the customer.

A chipmaker will assess:

â–  Overlay: can dozens of layers be placed exactly on top of each other?
â–  Throughput: how many wafers can the machine process each hour?
â–  Availability: what percentage of the time is the system operational?
â–  Defectivity: how many errors are introduced during exposure?
â–  Yield: what percentage of the chips produced can ultimately be sold?

Even a modest disadvantage in these areas can have a major economic effect. A slower machine reduces factory output. Poorer overlay can make entire wafers unusable. More frequent failures increase maintenance costs and reduce production predictability.

The Chinese systems must therefore prove more than their ability to print patterns. They must demonstrate that they can do so continuously, with very few defects and at an acceptable cost.

Why ASML’s DUV lead remains substantial

ASML has refined its immersion-DUV platform over several decades. Its current systems combine accurate lithography with high productivity and advanced process-control software.

The advantage includes:

â–  extremely precise wafer positioning;
â–  advanced optical systems;
â–  fast and stable light sources;
â–  software that corrects process deviations;
â–  integration with metrology and inspection;
â–  a worldwide maintenance and service network.

The final point is often underestimated. A semiconductor factory cannot tolerate extended downtime. ASML has built a large installed-base infrastructure of engineers, spare parts, operating data and predictive maintenance.

A new Chinese supplier must therefore do more than develop a comparable machine. It must build a similar ecosystem that allows fabs to use those systems reliably for many years.

EUV widens the technological gap

The Chinese development currently focuses on DUV. ASML’s most important position is already further up the technology curve.

ASML is the only company supplying commercial EUV systems. These machines are essential for manufacturing the most advanced logic and memory chips.

China does not have a commercially viable EUV machine. The country can produce some advanced chips through DUV and complex multipatterning, but every additional patterning step increases cost and reduces the probability of achieving a strong yield.

For an advanced AI chip, a process involving many additional DUV steps may be technically possible but economically much less attractive than EUV production.

A Chinese DUV machine therefore does not directly attack ASML’s most valuable position. The initial risk lies in older mature-node systems, not in the technology used to manufacture the most advanced chips.

High-NA EUV moves the frontier again

ASML is already developing the next lithography generation through High-NA EUV.

High-NA uses a higher numerical aperture and can image smaller patterns with greater precision. This may allow chipmakers to reduce complex multipatterning at future nodes.

The technology is particularly relevant for future logic chips, advanced processors and memory.

This is the key distinction between technological progress and technological parity.

China is improving within an existing category. ASML is simultaneously creating a new category for which no commercial alternative exists anywhere in the world.

Where the Chinese threat can become material

The Chinese development is most relevant to the mature-node segment.

Many chips used in vehicles, machinery, electrical infrastructure and consumer electronics are not manufactured on the most advanced nodes. Volumes in this part of the market are substantial.

A Chinese supplier may gain share by:

â–  offering lower prices;
â–  using state-backed financing;
â–  providing long-term service agreements to domestic customers;
â–  benefiting from political preferences for local equipment;
â–  operating with less exposure to U.S. export restrictions.

For ASML, this may mean that the Chinese market for older DUV systems becomes smaller over time.

The immediate revenue risk is likely to remain more closely tied to export restrictions than to Yuliangsheng’s current production capacity. New U.S. proposals could restrict sales and servicing of more DUV systems to companies including SMIC, Hua Hong and CXMT.

Why the entire chip-equipment sector is lower

The market is looking beyond lithography.

If China can build a domestic DUV machine, investors may expect faster progress in other production stages as well. This explains the selling pressure in U.S. chip-equipment stocks.

Applied Materials

Applied Materials sells equipment used in deposition and material engineering. China is investing heavily in domestic alternatives for these processes.

Lam Research

Lam Research has strong positions in etching and deposition. These technologies are essential whenever a new layer is added to or removed from a wafer.

KLA

KLA supplies inspection and metrology systems. As China develops domestic lithography, accurate measurement becomes even more important for correcting deviations between different process stages.

The market reaction therefore reflects more than the risk posed by one Chinese machine. It reflects concern that China may eventually develop a complete domestic manufacturing ecosystem.

That will be significantly more difficult than developing one equipment category. A modern semiconductor fab uses hundreds of machine types, specialized materials and highly complex software.

What the market is concluding too quickly

The market is treating three distinct stages as if they were the same:

  1. A machine can function technically.
  2. A producer can build a limited number of systems.
  3. Semiconductor fabs can use those systems profitably and reliably in high-volume manufacturing for many years.

China appears to be moving from the first stage toward the second.

The threat to ASML becomes directly material only when Chinese machines also reach the third stage and offer competitive speed, precision, reliability and yield.

There is not yet convincing evidence that this has happened.

The share-price decline therefore mainly reflects a long-term scenario in which China eventually requires less Western equipment. It says much less about ASML’s earnings power over the next several quarters.

Short term: sentiment may continue to drive the shares

ASML’s share price may remain under pressure in the short term.

Investors should account for:

â–  new reports about Chinese technology;
â–  further tightening of export regulations;
â–  changing investment plans among chipmakers;
â–  profit-taking after earlier share-price gains;
â–  strong rotations within AI and semiconductor stocks.

A strong long-term investment case does not protect a stock against an interim correction. At a high valuation, modest changes in sentiment can produce large share-price moves.

We therefore distinguish clearly between the company and the current trading picture. ASML remains strategically exceptional, but that does not mean every decline must be purchased immediately.

Long term: AI supports a potentially much higher valuation

Structural demand for advanced lithography remains powerful.

AI models require increasing computing power. This drives larger investment in advanced logic chips, HBM and other premium memory technologies.

ASML benefits at several levels:

â–  additional capacity at TSMC, Samsung and Intel;
â–  greater lithography intensity at each advanced node;
â–  growth of the EUV installed base;
â–  service and upgrade revenue;
â–  future adoption of High-NA EUV.

ASML raised its 2026 revenue outlook partly because of strong AI-chip demand and reported that its expanded EUV capacity for 2027 was already fully booked.

The company therefore combines several rare characteristics: a technological monopoly, extremely high barriers to entry and a growing end market.

This supports our view that the shares could double over the coming years. That scenario requires continued AI investment, further fab expansion by customers and successful execution of ASML’s capacity and margin plans.

Conclusion

The report by The Information marks serious progress for China’s semiconductor industry. Shanghai Yuliangsheng Technology appears to be moving from testing toward limited production of domestic immersion-DUV systems.

This may eventually affect sales of older Western machines in China. It also explains why the entire chip-equipment sector is trading lower.

Our long-term Investment view on ASML nevertheless remains strongly positive.

The Chinese systems still need to prove themselves in commercial production and remain technologically behind ASML’s modern DUV machines. The gap in EUV and High-NA EUV is substantially larger.

The short-term share-price outlook remains uncertain. Sentiment, export restrictions and concern about Chinese localization may continue to produce volatility.

Over the coming years, however, the central argument remains unchanged: the world needs increasingly powerful chips, and ASML owns the lithography technology required to manufacture them.

We therefore believe ASML shares may double over the longer term, even though the path toward that outcome may include substantial corrections.
