Data en state — intelligence zonder betrouwbare state blijft beperkt
IBM rapporteerde in Q2 $7,8 miljard softwareomzet, waarbij Data 19% groeide.
(about.gitlab.com)
Dynatrace rapporteerde $2,136 miljard ARR, +17%, en 41% organic net new ARR growth.
Adobe en Figma — production state tegenover generative scarcity
Braze rapporteerde $227,2 miljoen Q2 FY2027-revenue, +26,2%.
Intuit rapporteerde over fiscal 2026 $9,918 miljard Online Ecosystem revenue, +19%, terwijl QuickBooks Online Accounting 23% groeide.
Reallocatie versus werkelijk nieuw budget
English version
AI is rewriting software economics — where the new profit pools emerge and disappear
â– Agentic AI is shifting economic value across almost the entire technology chain. The first incremental dollars flow toward frontier intelligence and coding agents; beneath that layer sit lithography, EDA, HBM, accelerated compute, networking and power infrastructure; further up the stack the contest moves toward data, identity, security, execution, enterprise state and settlement. For investors, the decisive question is therefore not how many AI features a vendor has, but which supplier still gets paid when software itself increasingly becomes the user of software.
â– A meaningful portion of the first new enterprise-AI dollar currently flows to privately held OpenAI, Anthropic and Cursor. Zip measures AI vendors rising from 1.4% to 8.1% of observed software spending across its cohort, while Anthropic, Cursor and OpenAI together account for 74% of outlier-adjusted AI-vendor spend. The dataset covers roughly $18 billion of approved purchase-request value but is heavily skewed toward software and fintech companies, North American enterprises and organisations averaging roughly 2,400 employees, so it should be interpreted as procurement evidence rather than global software-market share. (zip.com)
â– Beneath this private intelligence layer sits a listed earnings pool much broader than NVIDIA and TSMC. ASML, Synopsys, Cadence, TSMC, Micron, SK hynix, NVIDIA, AMD, Broadcom, Arista and Vertiv monetise different scarce resources required before an autonomous agent can perform an economically useful task: chip design, lithography, advanced manufacturing, memory bandwidth, compute, networking, power and cooling.
â– At the software layer, reported pressure must be distinguished from future vulnerability. As of 23 September 2026 there is no sector-wide dataset demonstrating that AI is already destroying enterprise seats at scale. Asana reports overall NRR of 97%, for example, but does not causally attribute that number to AI. The appropriate conclusion is that the traditional seat model can become economically vulnerable when machine activity grows faster than human headcount, not that the shift is already visible across reported software revenue. (investors.asana.com)
â– The strongest emerging software positions may sit where autonomy creates new liability. Once agents deploy code, alter employee records, access customer data, execute agreements or move money, identity, permissions, policy, observability, auditability, recovery and settlement become necessary. Security, identity and transaction infrastructure can therefore attract genuinely incremental budgets while portions of productivity software primarily need to defend existing spending.
â– The critical future KPI is consequently not AI ARR but incremental gross profit per machine action. An autonomous action creates attractive economics only when realised revenue exceeds model, inference, cloud, database, security and observability expense and after contribution margin lost from displaced seat revenue is included. Salesforce Agentic Work Units, Figma AI credits, GitLab Credits, SentinelOne Singularity Credits and Microsoft's move toward seat-plus-consumption are early attempts to build that new economic meter. (investor.salesforce.com)
Investment view
The first SaaS wave primarily changed how software was delivered and billed. Applications moved from on-premise infrastructure to the cloud, but the economic actor remained largely the employee opening an application and requiring a licence. Agentic AI changes something deeper: not only where software runs, but who operates it.
The historical relationship between headcount, software usage and recurring revenue therefore becomes less stable. If one developer can produce two or three times as much output with coding agents, software volume no longer needs to scale proportionally with developer seats. The same logic applies to customer service, marketing, analytics and other knowledge-work categories. Companies charging per unit of compute, transaction, message, identity, security event or API call can experience the opposite effect, with productivity creating more machine volume.
The central institutional question is therefore not whether a vendor has AI functionality, but which resource it monetises and whether autonomous systems structurally consume more or less of that resource. The next question is whether another layer can abstract it.
Methodology and scope
The master matrix uses three evidence labels. H means current financial, operating or procurement data already directly support the relevant earnings or spending pool. For the unlisted names OpenAI, Anthropic and Cursor, H refers only to visibility of the procurement-spend pool in Zip's data and not to audited earnings disclosure. E means meaningful product, pricing or usage evidence exists while incremental AI economics remain insufficiently visible. T means the architectural thesis is relevant but cannot yet be isolated clearly in reported financial results. These labels are neither valuation scores nor expected-return forecasts. (zip.com)
The analysis covers the major software, AI-infrastructure and physical bottleneck layers but is not intended as a complete semiconductor or datacentre-capex model. Arm, Applied Materials, Lam Research, KLA, Dell and Super Micro Computer remain outside the core matrix. Visa and Mastercard are acknowledged as relevant settlement rails without being developed into standalone equity cases.

Private intelligence
Zip's evidence indicates that enterprise AI procurement is broadening technically while remaining concentrated economically. That matters because the first redistribution of software economics can occur before listed application vendors capture any of the spending. (zip.com)
Physical bottlenecks
ASML reported €9.3 billion of Q2 sales, a 54% gross margin and 86 new lithography systems sold. Synopsys reported $2.477 billion of Q3 FY2026 revenue and raised full-year expectations amid continued AI-driven demand strength. Cadence generated $1.584 billion of Q2 revenue, a 45.5% non-GAAP operating margin and an $8.1 billion backlog. These figures confirm that AI economics begin in design and manufacturing infrastructure before a model ever reaches production. (asml.com)
Micron's Cloud Memory business generated $13.769 billion of fiscal-Q3 revenue at an 83% gross margin and Core Data Center $11.524 billion at an 87% gross margin. SK hynix reported KRW 79.319 trillion of Q2 revenue and a 76% operating margin. These economics establish HBM and datacentre memory as first-order AI profit pools, while also making supply normalisation the obvious falsifier. (investors.micron.com)
Arista reported $3.036 billion of Q2 revenue, up 37.7%, with a 49.9% non-GAAP operating margin. Vertiv reported $3.274 billion of Q2 sales, up 24%, alongside a 22.6% adjusted operating margin and $925 million of adjusted free cash flow. Networking, power and cooling are therefore already measurable earnings pools rather than derivative narratives. (arista.com)
Compute
NVIDIA reported $96.2 billion of Q2 FY2027 revenue, including $89.0 billion of Data Center revenue, up 117%. The company also now carries materially larger ecosystem commitments, while its Q3 outlook assumes no Data Center compute revenue from China. (nvidianews.nvidia.com)
AMD's Data Center revenue reached $6.7 billion, up 107%, creating a meaningful second merchant-compute pool. Broadcom represents the custom-silicon and networking alternative as hyperscalers increasingly optimise workloads around cost per useful inference. (ir.amd.com)
Microsoft — adoption does not automatically equal monetisation
Microsoft's FY2026 Q4 disclosures provide one of the clearest examples of AI adoption and AI economics diverging. Additional Azure capacity was rapidly monetised, while rising GitHub Copilot usage initially pressured gross margins; after the June move toward usage-based pricing, consumption revenue strengthened and Copilot margins improved through the quarter. (microsoft.com)
The pattern is likely to become relevant across application software: greater usage can initially increase cost-to-serve faster than revenue, forcing pricing to move from pure seats toward consumption.
Data and state
MongoDB reported $771.8 million of Q2 revenue, up 30%, with a 74% GAAP gross margin. IBM reported $7.8 billion of Q2 Software revenue, with Data up 19%, while Confluent is now part of IBM rather than a standalone listed company. Elastic reported $478 million of Q1 FY2027 revenue, up 15%, and 21% cRPO growth. (investors.mongodb.com)
Box reported $321.1 million of Q2 revenue, 15% RPO growth and 106% NRR. Cloudflare reported $696.1 million of Q2 revenue, up 36%, but with GAAP gross margin declining to 71.8% from 74.9%, illustrating why machine traffic volume alone does not guarantee stronger economics. (boxinvestorrelations.com)
Systems of record, control and execution
Oracle reported Q1 Cloud Infrastructure revenue growth of 121% to $7.4 billion while Cloud Applications grew 10% to $4.2 billion, illustrating within one company how infrastructure can accelerate far faster than traditional SaaS. (investor.oracle.com)
Salesforce reported more than $1.5 billion of Agentforce ARR, nearly $3.9 billion of Agentforce plus Data 360 ARR and 7.0 billion Agentic Work Units. Workday reported $2.471 billion of subscription revenue, up 13.9%. ServiceNow reported $3.877 billion of Q2 subscription revenue, 21% cRPO growth and more than $1 billion of AI ACV. (investor.salesforce.com)
GitLab 19.4 supplies direct product evidence for the transition toward machine-native execution through /goal, governed MCP tooling, GitLab Credits and lower-cost open-weight model options. (about.gitlab.com)
Security and identity
CrowdStrike reported $5.84 billion of Q2 ARR and $332.8 million of net new ARR. Palo Alto Networks reported $3.41 billion of quarterly revenue and $9.10 billion of Next-Generation Security ARR. Fortinet reported $2.05 billion of Q2 revenue and $2.37 billion of billings. (ir.crowdstrike.com)
SentinelOne reported $292 million of Q2 FY2027 revenue and $1.218 billion of ARR. Singularity Credits are particularly relevant because they create a unified currency for AI-powered machine work inside the security platform, providing an early example of machine-native security monetisation. (investors.sentinelone.com)
Observability and resilience
Rubrik reported $1.66 billion of subscription ARR, up 33%, and $427.3 million of revenue, up 38%. Datadog reported $1.12 billion of Q2 revenue, up 36%. Dynatrace reported $2.136 billion of ARR, up 17%, and 41% organic net new ARR growth. These businesses benefit from a world in which autonomous software produces more state changes and more complex failure modes that need to be traced and reversed. (rubrik.com)
Creative and application software
Figma's pricing evidence is direct: Professional customers now receive twice as many AI credits and Organization and Enterprise customers 1.6 times as many at unchanged pricing. That proves lower effective price per credit but does not establish lower gross profit without underlying inference-cost disclosure. (help.figma.com)
Asana reported $216.4 million of Q2 revenue and 97% overall NRR while explicitly discussing consumption- and outcome-based revenue streams alongside seats. Atlassian reported $1.8 billion of quarterly revenue, 31% cloud growth and more than 50% sequential growth in Rovo assisted actions. These disclosures reinforce why seat-risk remains a structural thesis rather than already-proven sector-wide damage. (investors.asana.com)
HubSpot's rebuilt Breeze Assistant is explicitly grounded in current CRM, business and customer context. Freshworks reported $237.4 million of Q2 revenue, up 16%, with Freddy AI Copilot attached to more than 71% of new enterprise deals. (ir.hubspot.com)
Marketing, communications and vertical context
Zeta Global reported $443 million of Q2 revenue, up 44%, and 73% free-cash-flow growth. Klaviyo reported $370.6 million of Q2 revenue, up 26%, and 109% NRR. Braze reported $227.2 million of Q2 FY2027 revenue, up 26.2%. (investors.zetaglobal.com)
NiCE reported $362 million of AI ARR, approximately 15% of cloud revenue, alongside $782.3 million of Q2 revenue. Twilio reported $1.50 billion of Q2 revenue, up 22%, and 116% dollar-based net expansion. These businesses illustrate how falling human-seat requirements can coexist with rising machine-interaction volume. (nice.com)
Intuit's Online Ecosystem generated $9.918 billion of fiscal-2026 revenue, up 19%, while Veeva reported $928 million of Q2 revenue and $766.8 million of subscription revenue. Proprietary financial, tax and regulated life-sciences state raise the bypass threshold for horizontal agents. (investors.intuit.com)
Commerce and settlement
Shopify reported 34% Q2 revenue growth and an 18% free-cash-flow margin. Adyen reported €1.3029 billion of H1 net revenue, up 21% in constant currency, while expanding into usage billing and agentic payments. These businesses sit closer to completed economic actions than to the intelligence layer that initiates them. (shopify.com)
Seat deflation
The sector still lacks broad evidence that AI is already the dominant cause of SaaS seat destruction. Productivity gains and pricing-model changes are visible; widespread seat contraction causally tied to AI is not.
The framework therefore distinguishes vulnerability of the historical billing unit from already reported financial damage.
Gross profit per machine action
The relevant future economic waterfall begins with realised machine-action revenue and subtracts inference, cloud, data, security, observability, exception handling and displaced legacy contribution margin.
The residual is incremental gross profit per machine action. That is ultimately the disclosure investors need to distinguish genuinely superior AI economics from expensive adoption.
Final view
Agentic AI is not simply a contest between AI winners and SaaS losers. It is a redistribution of earnings pools from private intelligence through physical infrastructure, cloud, data, security, enterprise state, execution and settlement.
The strongest positions combine two characteristics: autonomous systems consume more of the underlying resource as usage scales, and the vendor owns a control point another layer cannot cheaply abstract.
The central question for every company therefore remains whether an autonomous agent can complete a valuable, valid and accountable action without that vendor remaining in the execution path.
If it cannot, the company may own a durable agentic tollbooth. If it can, and the historical economics still depend primarily on human seats, the economic unit itself has to change.
