â– Amerikaanse arbeidsmarkt: vrijdag komen nieuwe banencijfers.
â– Siemens Energy: verloor gisteren stevig terrein.
Voor nu blijft het vooral wait and see.
English
â– Europe: European futures point to another mixed opening. US futures improved somewhat heading into the European open, but we saw the same thing yesterday and it ultimately led to very little. So no reason to celebrate. At most, a slightly friendlier opening within the same trading range.
â– Market view: trading remains slow and sluggish. Volumes are light, conviction is limited and investors are mainly watching oil, rates and Friday's US payrolls. Good corporate earnings provide support, but higher oil and especially rising long-term yields remain a restraint.
â– Oil / Iran: tensions around the Strait of Hormuz continue to support oil. Iran continues to make clear that it will not simply bend to Washington, while missile attacks toward Jordan and US counteractions keep the bickering going. Markets are not expecting a huge escalation for now, but every fresh action can push oil higher again.
â– Oil / rates: the problem for equities does not lie only in higher oil itself. Higher energy prices feed inflation expectations, bonds come under pressure and yields rise further. That second-round impact through rates and valuations may ultimately matter more than the initial move in crude.
â– Geopolitics: alongside Iran, tensions between Russia and Ukraine are rising again. Wheat is trading close to its highest level in almost three years. Geopolitical risks are therefore increasingly working not only through oil but also through other commodities and inflation.
â– US rates: the US 10-year yield remains around its highest levels since early 2025. The increasingly important question is whether the market first moves toward 5% or whether institutional buyers emerge around current levels. A slowly rising yield can be absorbed by equities, but not if the move becomes too fast.
â– Global rates: this is clearly not just an American story. Japan's 10-year yield is around 3%, its highest level since 1996. German and French long-term yields are also rising sharply. Investors are demanding a higher term premium globally and that is increasingly feeding into equity valuations.
â– Japan / government debt: precisely in Japan, 3% becomes interesting. Government debt stands at roughly 230%-248% of GDP depending on the calculation method, while the government is again planning substantial spending. Structurally higher rates could therefore become much more sensitive for Japan's fiscal position.
â– US government debt: the same problem appears in a different form in the US, where debt has exceeded $40 trillion. The higher long-term yields move, the more financing costs and debt sustainability become part of the market story.
â– Kevin Warsh / central banks: his more hawkish Jackson Hole message carries greater weight now that oil and rates are rising together. In substance it was largely a repetition of earlier messages, but markets are taking the risk of further tightening much more seriously.
â– Fed: markets are now pricing a meaningful probability of a September rate hike. That means higher oil, inflation concerns and Warsh are no longer merely theoretical risks but are actually being reflected in the yield curve.
â– US labor market: new jobs data arrive on Friday. Strong figures could further increase the probability of a rate hike, while weaker data could temporarily provide relief for bonds and equities.
â– Scott Bessent / Treasuries: at the same time, the possible bond buyback program continues to hang over the market. Fundamentally it does not solve America's debt problem, somewhat like pouring water into the sea, but technically it could temporarily push long yields lower. With significant short positioning, that could then trigger a substantial equity short squeeze.
â– Wall Street: yesterday's session was mixed to lower, while semiconductors held up somewhat better. Part of that strength looked somewhat artificial because of month-end flows. That is why we should not immediately interpret every strong closing move as the start of a new trend.
â– Gold and silver: both are mixed to flat and recently ran into resistance. For now, there is no new convincing breakout.
â– European sectors: higher oil can support oil and energy-related stocks, while airlines suffer from higher fuel costs. That can create renewed sector rotation within Europe.
â– European semiconductors: fundamentally the outlook remains good. Construction of new semiconductor facilities continues and suppliers therefore remain structurally well positioned. Price action remains volatile and many names continue to encounter resistance. The question for us is mainly when the next uprun starts, not whether structural demand has disappeared.
â– UCB: has reached an agreement with the US government to lower medicine costs and strengthen manufacturing in the US. UCB will donate Keppra API and tablets to the national ASPR stockpile and in return will not be subject to Section 232 pharmaceutical tariffs or future pricing mandates. We view that positively because it removes an important layer of policy and tariff uncertainty, but by itself it is not enough to send UCB sharply higher.
■Aedifica: the first-half results were simply good. Rental income came in at €292.3 million and EPRA earnings at €189.9 million, while EPRA earnings per share rose to €2.71. Occupancy remains very high at 99.1%, the average remaining lease term is 15 years, the dividend rises 5% and synergies should continue to increase. In our view, Aedifica remains clearly undervalued for the long term. Holding a small position in the portfolio therefore still makes sense to us.
â– Argenx: has two September dates to watch, with the Wells Fargo Healthcare Conference on September 8 and the Morgan Stanley Global Healthcare Conference on September 14. These are not fundamental catalysts by themselves, but for traders they are dates that should clearly be on the calendar. Bullish news or fresh commentary could create a short upside trade. First the news, then the trade.
■SBM Offshore: already received support yesterday from higher oil and Bernstein's price-target increase from €46 to €48. If oil stays elevated, that could provide renewed support.
â– Vopak: could also benefit from the stronger energy complex. Not a stock to chase after an opening jump, but a name that could hold up relatively well in this environment.
■Arcadis: was weaker yesterday, but our view does not change. We still think the shares can move toward €50. The takeover battle surrounding the company remains an additional factor.
■Alfen: the area around €10 now really needs to provide support. The stock initially jumped after earnings and then fell sharply again. If that floor also breaks, it could mean investors fear that more is going on than simple profit taking.
â– Solvay: as a cyclical to mid-cycle stock, could again attract buyers on dips. If the European industrial cycle stabilises, laggards such as these can come back into focus.
â– Syensqo: the same applies here. Demand can reappear on weak days. It remains a mid-cycle name where a broader improvement in the industrial cycle ultimately matters more than one trading day.
■SIPEF: Barclays points out that El Niño could lead to sharply higher prices for palm oil, coconut oil and rubber. That could directly support SIPEF, although such a price effect may prove temporary. At the same time, the area around €100 remains technically important. If that holds and higher agricultural prices support margins, we get a much more interesting combination of fundamental tailwind and technical bottom formation, with room on the upside.
â– Air Liquide: activist Elliott Investment Management has built a stake and is pushing for higher margins and operational improvements. That can put additional pressure on management to sharpen its focus on returns and costs. In our view, Air Liquide remains one of the enduring candidates to move higher, helped by its strong structural position in industrial gases, semiconductors and the broader AI data-center complex.
â– Siemens Energy: lost substantial ground yesterday. Structurally, the outlook for AI, electricity grids and energy infrastructure remains strong and ultimately we still expect higher prices. In the short term, however, there is clear caution around the AI complex.
â– Prosus: the weaker tone in Hong Kong could create some pressure. More fundamentally, we increasingly question why Prosus, beyond its strong Tencent position, allocates so much capital to relatively low-margin internet activities, including Just Eat Takeaway. Low-margin businesses are simply not the type of business model we naturally become enthusiastic about.
â– Asia: the picture is mixed. Taiwan stands out positively and once again confirms that the semiconductor story retains underlying support, while South Korea is more sideways and Hong Kong remains weaker.
â– South Korea: export growth came in much stronger than expected, driven in particular by semiconductor demand linked to the global AI boom. For us, that is a more meaningful confirmation of the chip cycle than equity price action alone. Demand for AI hardware is clearly showing up in real trade flows.
â– China: the manufacturing PMI improved, with production, new orders and exports all strengthening. That is not an all-clear for China, but it is a sign that the industrial cycle is no longer deteriorating and may be starting to improve cautiously.
â– Shein: the Hong Kong market debut remains weak. The shares are trading below the offer price, confirming limited investor enthusiasm for now. Tariff and duty changes in the US and Europe have also damaged an important pillar of its low-cost business model.
â– Sandisk: made a sharp jump into yesterday's close, probably helped in part by month-end rebalancing. Whether that move genuinely marks the beginning of something bigger remains to be seen. Our longer-term view remains bullish, but the move looked partly artificial. This remains exactly the type of stock that can still correct sharply in the short term but could also trade much higher over a twelve-month to two-year horizon if the semiconductor cycle strengthens further.
â– NVIDIA: the roughly $35 billion Anthropic-Lambda deal shows how broadly NVIDIA now sits across the same AI chain. Anthropic rents compute, Lambda provides that capacity on NVIDIA systems, NVIDIA has invested in Lambda and also plays a role around the underlying data-center capacity. NVIDIA is therefore not only selling chips but increasingly helping finance the chain in which those same chips are used. As long as genuine end demand, workloads and cash flows continue to grow, that can be powerful and strengthen lock-in further. The risk is that these circular-economy deals keep piling up. At that point, markets will increasingly ask how much demand is truly organic and how much is facilitated by NVIDIA itself. Our long-term view remains bullish, but the case is becoming less clean and NVIDIA is increasingly playing bank.
â– Hut 8: fits directly into that same NVIDIA and Anthropic story. It shows how former crypto miners are evolving into AI facilitators. Hut 8 controls power connections, land and data-center capacity, precisely the areas where AI is creating scarcity. That can make longer contracts and higher pricing possible. The stock remains extremely volatile, but sharp dips can become interesting when AI contracts and the infrastructure position are strengthening at the same time.
â– Eli Lilly: is acquiring Merida Biosciences for up to $2.875 billion in cash, including an upfront payment and conditional milestone payments. Merida develops a new class of precision medicines for severe autoimmune and allergic diseases, selectively degrading pathogenic autoantibodies rather than broadly suppressing the immune system. The acquisition strengthens Lilly's position in immunology and is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026.
â– Crypto stocks: these closed strongly yesterday and showed a good late-session push. Even so, I prefer to remain cautious. If it is not clear that a bottom is genuinely in place, I would rather miss an opportunity than chase the next move.
â– Bitcoin: is trading around the $79,000 area. The question remains whether this is already the start of another bull run or whether consolidation and another step lower come first.
â– Equity strategy: in stocks, buy-on-dips remains the approach. Fallen angels, high-quality semiconductor names and clearly undervalued stocks remain particularly interesting when they weaken further. That does require the courage to buy even though a stock could still take another hit in the short term.
â– Options: I am doing very little. At most, I am taking small shots with call spreads or bear spreads. Around five option positions are open, while going full throttle for me can mean twenty to thirty different positions. Blindly shorting remains dangerous as long as one Trump post or one Treasury announcement can suddenly send markets higher again. Doing nothing is also investing and sometimes that is simply part of the game.
â– Investment view: the market has not suddenly turned bearish, but oil and especially global long-term yields are becoming increasingly meaningful headwinds. Japan's 10-year yield around 3%, its highest level since 1996, shows how broad the rates story has become. On the other side, corporate earnings remain good, South Korean semiconductor exports are strong and Chinese industrial data have improved somewhat. So there is no reason to go full throttle, but also no reason to blindly short. Buy-on-dips remains the approach in high-quality names, fallen angels and clearly undervalued stocks. For now, this remains mainly a wait-and-see market.
