SCE Trader

Positieve vrije kasstroom moet in H2 FY2028 terugkeren.

■ Lumentum: De mogelijke Marvell-transactie onderstreept hoe strategisch optics is geworden.
■ AAOI: Applied Optoelectronics profiteert vooral via optische modules.

Cloud and Power Infrastructure moet in FY2027 met 75–85% groeien.
■ Kern: De volgende AI-bottleneck is steeds vaker stroom.

Semiconductor overview: Samsung sells out 2027 HBM as cash flow and optics define the next phase

© 2026 SCEtrader.nl - All rights reserved.

Samsung Electronics confirms that the physical AI cycle remains exceptionally strong. Revenue reached a record KRW195.3 trillion and operating profit KRW107.4 trillion, with Device Solutions generating virtually all group profit. Memory again set records, HBM4 is expanding rapidly and Samsung says available 2027 HBM capacity is already sold while customers continue requesting additional volume. KLA, UMC, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Vertiv, Flex, Equinix and GE Vernova simultaneously show that the same investment wave is spreading further into inspection, mature nodes, passive components, substrates, power, cooling and physical data-center capacity.

The economic quality of that growth is becoming at least as important as physical demand. Microsoft combines 48% Azure growth with $18.6 billion of free cash flow, while Alphabet reports approximately negative $9.1 billion of free cash flow despite Google Cloud more than doubling. Oracle is earlier in the investment cycle and does not expect positive free cash flow until H2 FY2028. For professional investors, the analysis is therefore shifting from how much AI capacity is being built toward which companies can convert that capacity into high utilization, pricing power, strong margins and enough cash generation to fund the next investment cycle without structural balance-sheet pressure.

■ Samsung Electronics: Revenue reached a record KRW195.3 trillion and operating profit KRW107.4 trillion. Device Solutions generated KRW147.1 trillion of revenue and KRW106.5 trillion of operating profit. Memory again posted records, HBM4 is scaling rapidly and Samsung says available 2027 HBM capacity is already sold while customers continue requesting additional volume.
■ Microsoft (MSFT): Revenue increased 19% to $92.3 billion, Azure grew 48% to $33.17 billion, Microsoft Cloud increased 30% to $63.9 billion and commercial RPO rose 73% to $677 billion. Free cash flow reached $18.6 billion despite $45.2 billion of capex, making Microsoft the strongest current financial benchmark within the hyperscaler AI cycle.
■ Alphabet (GOOGL): Revenue increased 25% to $127.6 billion and Google Cloud reached $30.7 billion, more than doubling year over year. TPU systems are now a meaningful growth contributor, but free cash flow was approximately negative $9.1 billion. Demand remains exceptional, but so does the financial cost of meeting it.
■ Oracle (ORCL): Oracle expects at least $225 billion of FY2030 revenue, non-GAAP operating margin above 40% and adjusted EPS of at least $21. Following the already completed $20 billion equity raise, Oracle expects to require no more than another $20 billion of external capital through FY2030. Positive free cash flow should return in H2 FY2028.
■ Marvell / Lumentum: Marvell is in advanced discussions over a possible acquisition of Lumentum. No definitive agreement has been reached. A transaction would combine Marvell's custom silicon, switching and networking portfolio with Lumentum's InP lasers and other optical technologies and could materially reshape the AI-connectivity market.

Marvell

■ Acquisition talks: Reuters confirms that Marvell is in advanced discussions to acquire Lumentum after Bloomberg first reported the talks. A transaction could potentially be announced next week, but no definitive agreement has been reached.
■ Strategic logic: Marvell already has strong positions in custom AI silicon, switching, DSPs and data-center networking. Lumentum adds InP lasers, optical switching and other high-value optical components.
■ Celestial AI: Marvell has also acquired Celestial AI for $3.25 billion. Combining Celestial AI with Lumentum could create an integrated platform spanning custom compute, photonic fabric, DSP, switching and lasers.
■ Financing: Reuters puts Lumentum's market value at roughly $83 billion, while Marvell held approximately $3.92 billion of cash in its latest quarter. Any acquisition would therefore likely require substantial financing and carry meaningful integration risk.
■ Market reaction: Lumentum rose roughly 9% after hours while Marvell fell more than 8%, showing that investors see strategic value in Lumentum but are much more cautious about the potential price and funding burden for Marvell.

Broadcom and custom AI

■ Custom silicon: The structural direction remains favorable for Broadcom and other ASIC providers. Hyperscalers increasingly want proprietary silicon alongside NVIDIA to improve power efficiency, cost, availability and control of the software stack.
■ Google TPU: Alphabet confirms that TPU systems are playing an increasingly meaningful economic role inside Google Cloud. Strong Cloud growth shows proprietary accelerators are no longer only a mechanism for lowering internal compute costs.
■ OpenAI and TPU: Earlier reports that OpenAI plans direct TPU purchases fit the same transition. AI compute is evolving toward a mix of NVIDIA GPUs, AMD, TPUs and other custom accelerators rather than one architecture for every workload.
■ J.P. Morgan indication: A forecast attributed to J.P. Morgan and circulating in institutional channels estimates total data-center AI chip volume rising from roughly 15.9 million units in 2026 to 31.2 million in 2028. Within that framework NVIDIA rises from approximately 7.4 million to 10.7 million, AMD from 0.8 million to 2.0 million and custom ASICs from roughly 7.4 million to 17.2 million. Because the original note is not publicly available, we treat the exact numbers as indicative.
■ Interpretation: The broader conclusion is more robust than the exact figures: custom silicon can expand materially faster than GPUs while the overall market remains large enough for absolute NVIDIA volume to keep increasing.

NVIDIA

■ Market position: NVIDIA remains dominant in frontier training and very large GPU clusters, but hyperscalers are deliberately investing in alternatives. The key question is therefore not whether NVIDIA disappears, but how incremental compute demand is divided between GPUs and proprietary silicon.
■ Rubin: Vera Rubin remains an important next growth phase. At the same time, customers are trying to use scarce HBM, power and networking more efficiently, meaning every architecture change also affects the economics of the wider supply chain.
■ Architecture mix: Lower percentage share in a rapidly expanding market does not necessarily imply lower NVIDIA revenue. It does, however, increase hyperscaler bargaining power and reduce dependence on one supplier.

AMD

■ Multiple growth vectors: AMD participates not only through Instinct GPUs but also through EPYC server CPUs and Pensando networking, allowing the company to capture value at several layers of the AI rack.
■ Custom versus merchant silicon: Rapid custom-ASIC growth is not automatically negative for AMD. Large customers increasingly want multiple architectures and AMD can provide CPUs, accelerators and networking.
■ Competition: Software, scale and availability remain the key challenges. NVIDIA still holds a major advantage, meaning AMD's opportunity is primarily to gain share inside a rapidly expanding market.

CPUs, servers and assembly

■ CPU demand: Agentic AI and inference are increasing CPU requirements as well. Orchestration, retrieval, code execution and parts of data processing are not economically suited to GPUs alone.
■ Intel: Upcoming results are important for server CPUs, Diamond Rapids and Intel's position in enterprise AI. Intel reports after the US close today.
■ AMD: EPYC continues gaining x86 share while Arm-based processors from hyperscalers and NVIDIA take a larger role in the server market.
■ Supply chain: Server CPU growth can ultimately be constrained by substrates, memory and other components around the processor. The bottleneck increasingly sits in the complete platform rather than the CPU itself.

Optics and interconnect

■ Lumentum: The possible Marvell transaction highlights how strategic optics has become. Demand for high-performance lasers and optical links is rising as clusters expand and electrical interconnect reaches limits in power, distance and heat.
■ Corning: Optical Communications recently increased 44% to $2.38 billion and Enterprise Networks 84%, while products directly related to generative AI more than doubled, providing strong fundamental support for the optical supercycle.
■ Lumentum and Coherent: Both companies have direct exposure to InP, lasers and other high-performance optical components. The move toward 200G per lane, 1.6T and eventually CPO raises both technical requirements and content value.
■ AAOI: Applied Optoelectronics is more directly exposed through optical modules. Its position differs from laser suppliers, but the same bandwidth growth supports the end market.
■ Broadcom and Marvell: These companies benefit primarily through switching, DSPs and other networking silicon. Optics is no longer a standalone component market but an integrated chain of lasers, modules, switches and signal processing.

Advanced foundries

■ Samsung Foundry: Samsung reports better results from higher HBM base-die and advanced-node sales. The company continues winning 2nm projects from HPC customers, including major hyperscalers.
■ 2027: Samsung expects 4nm and 2nm to be the primary growth engines, with the Taylor, Texas facility contributing more from 2027.
■ Strategic read-through: TSMC remains the clear market leader, but hyperscalers increasingly have reason to use a second foundry source for selected custom chips when leading-edge nodes and packaging remain constrained.

Mature and specialty foundries

■ UMC: UMC generated NT$74.24 billion of revenue with fab utilization at 92%. 22/28nm represented roughly 35% of wafer revenue and 22nm reached a record share.
■ AI read-through: AI systems require large amounts of power management, controllers, connectivity and other devices that do not need 2nm or 3nm manufacturing.
■ Silicon photonics: UMC is seeing growing customer interest in silicon photonics and advanced packaging, pulling mature foundry capacity into the AI infrastructure cycle.

Samsung Group

■ Samsung Electronics: Quarterly revenue reached KRW195.3 trillion and operating profit KRW107.4 trillion, with Device Solutions generating virtually all group profit.
■ Memory: Samsung expects AI-driven memory demand in 2027 to materially outpace industry supply growth.
■ HBM4: HBM4 sales have ramped rapidly and available 2027 HBM supply is already sold while customers continue requesting additional capacity.
■ Capex: Samsung expects approximately KRW84.4 trillion of 2026 capex, including KRW76.8 trillion for Device Solutions, a record investment level for the semiconductor division.
■ Shareholders: Samsung expects approximately KRW90–110 trillion of total shareholder returns for 2026, but investors remain cautious because the next multi-year return policy will not be finalized until early 2027.

DRAM

■ Market: Premium server DRAM remains strong as AI data centers require far more memory than HBM alone.
■ Capacity shift: Suppliers are allocating more capacity toward HBM and premium server products, keeping supply for PCs, smartphones and lower-value applications relatively tight.
■ China: CXMT is more advanced in conventional DRAM than in HBM, making competitive pressure more likely to appear first in traditional DRAM categories.
■ Investment View: Slower extreme price inflation does not change our positive fundamental view. We ultimately want greater memory exposure but are waiting for a stronger technical setup in individual stocks.

HBM

■ Samsung: 2027 HBM capacity is sold and customers continue requesting additional volume.
■ SK hynix context: SK hynix previously indicated that long-term agreements and current customer discussions effectively sell out DRAM and HBM volumes through 2029. This sits outside the current 24-hour window and is used only as background.
■ Structural scarcity: HBM consumes more wafer capacity per unit of memory than conventional DRAM. New fabs can therefore be absorbed by premium products without immediately creating broad oversupply.
■ China: CXMT intends to start limited HBM3E production, but yields are reportedly only around 20–30% compared with roughly 70% at SK hynix, limiting near-term high-end competitive pressure.
■ Investment View: We remain constructive on Micron and SK hynix but want a convincing technical base, higher lows and an improving trend before increasing exposure materially.

NAND, SSD and HDD

■ Samsung: Samsung sees strong QLC enterprise SSD demand as agentic AI and retrieval drive greater storage and caching requirements.
■ NAND: NAND economics remain different from DRAM and HBM. AI data-center growth supports enterprise SSD, but supply discipline remains essential to avoid renewed oversupply.
■ Sandisk: Sandisk reports later today and will provide an important test of NAND pricing, enterprise SSD and QLC demand.
■ HDD: Nearline HDD remains supported by explosive data creation, but HDD and NAND should continue to be assessed separately.

Niche memory and modules

■ SOCAMM3: TLB is developing SOCAMM3 substrates with two major memory customers and targets mass production in 2028. SOCAMM is designed to place large amounts of memory close to compute while improving power and density.
■ Goke Microelectronics: DigiTimes reports that Goke will raise KGD product pricing by roughly $0.50–$1.50 per unit from November, depending on capacity. The absolute move is small at system level but provides another indication that memory tightness is flowing into packaging and modules.
■ Interpretation: Memory tightness is therefore visible not only at DRAM and HBM producers but also across modules, Known Good Die and packaging components.

Front-end equipment

■ MiCo Ceramics: DigiTimes reports that MiCo Ceramics is acquiring a former LG Display facility in Gumi for KRW150 billion to expand capacity for products including ceramic heaters and electrostatic chucks used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.
■ Read-through: The investment is much smaller than the major Samsung or TSMC fab programs but shows how the upcycle is spreading into specialized front-end equipment components.
■ ASMI context: Previously reported strong ASMI results remain relevant background because leading-edge logic and HBM-related DRAM require more deposition steps and increasingly complex equipment, but those figures are not repeated as fresh 24-hour news.

BESI

■ Hybrid bonding: Applied Materials' previously announced stake increase in BESI remains relevant background for advanced packaging. AI architectures combine more logic and memory dies, increasing the role of bonding and 3D integration.
■ Timing: The transaction itself predates the current window and is therefore not treated as fresh news.

Packaging and OSAT

■ Complexity: Advanced packaging becomes increasingly important as AI systems combine multiple logic and memory dies, raising demand for bonding, substrates, test and assembly.
■ Samsung Electro-Mechanics: Package Solution revenue increased 58% to KRW939 billion, driven by server CPUs, AI accelerators and networking. The company plans faster FCBGA capacity expansion.
■ Amkor context: Previously reported margin improvement at Amkor remains relevant background to the packaging cycle but is not new within this window.

Test and inspection

■ KLA: Revenue reached $4.14 billion and free cash flow $1.34 billion, confirming the acceleration KLA expected for the second half of calendar 2026.
■ Process control: Larger dies, more complex transistor structures, HBM and advanced packaging all increase the number of inspection points.
■ Outlook: KLA expects roughly $4.7 billion of next-quarter revenue plus or minus $200 million.
■ Investment View: KLA remains an attractive way to express increasing semiconductor complexity because it benefits regardless of which particular GPU or ASIC gains share.

Substrates and PCB

■ Samsung Electro-Mechanics: Quarterly revenue increased 30% to KRW3.763 trillion and operating profit 165% to KRW691 billion. AI data centers, servers, networking and power were major growth drivers.
■ FCBGA: High-end FCBGA demand is expanding rapidly because of server CPUs and AI accelerators. Samsung Electro-Mechanics plans accelerated capacity expansion.
■ Simmtech: DigiTimes reports that major substrate vendors are directing more capex toward large ABF substrates while BT capacity expansion for memory packaging remains relatively constrained.
■ Unimicron: Unimicron is directing additional resources toward high-end AI and HPC substrate capacity in Taiwan.
■ Core conclusion: As CPUs, GPUs, ASICs and memory become larger and more complex, the value of the structures physically and electrically connecting these chips also rises.

Wafers and materials

■ Materials demand: Greater chip complexity and larger packages are pulling demand for specialist materials and production components higher.
■ MiCo Ceramics: The Gumi expansion illustrates how the semiconductor cycle is reaching ceramic heaters and electrostatic chucks used inside wafer equipment.
■ Interpretation: These are smaller parts of the chain, but they can become meaningful bottlenecks when multiple fabs expand at the same time.

Power and analog

■ Vertiv (VRT): Revenue increased 61% to $4.313 billion, adjusted operating margin reached 25.2% and adjusted EPS $2.21. Vertiv raised full-year guidance again.
■ Cooling: Higher rack power densities make liquid cooling and advanced thermal management increasingly important, and Vertiv shows this is already a major revenue market.
■ Flex: Revenue increased 25% to $8.5 billion and Cloud and Power Infrastructure is expected to grow 75–85% in FY2027.
■ GE Vernova: Orders rose 96% organically to $29 billion and backlog reached $197 billion, with 122 GW of Gas Power backlog and reserved production slots.
■ Trench Group: The planned $9 billion acquisition expands GE Vernova's position in high-voltage equipment, a segment becoming increasingly important as new AI data centers seek grid connections.
■ Core conclusion: Power is increasingly the next AI bottleneck. Without generation, grid access, transformers, cooling and substations, purchased compute cannot be deployed productively.

Passive components

■ Samsung Electro-Mechanics: Component Solution revenue reached KRW1.883 trillion, up 36%, driven by AI data centers, servers, networking and power.
■ AI MLCC Law: Samsung Electro-Mechanics says required MLCC capacitance per AI GPU or ASIC is roughly doubling annually, creating a structural growth driver for high-capacitance and compact MLCCs.
■ Long-term contracts: Major technology customers are increasingly securing MLCC supply through long-term agreements.
■ Interpretation: Scarcity therefore extends beyond GPUs, HBM and CoWoS into passive components as rack power and board complexity continue rising.

Automotive, industrial and edge

■ Melexis (MELE): Revenue increased 4% to €223.7 million, gross margin reached 40.7%, operating margin 18.5% and net income increased 14% to €31.3 million.
■ Outlook: Melexis maintained second-half guidance for €445–455 million of revenue, around 41% gross margin and around 18% operating margin.
■ China and BYD: China revenue reached a record and Melexis signed a Master Purchase Agreement with BYD.
■ Physical AI: Robotics design wins moved into volume production earlier than expected, making Physical AI a tangible new revenue stream beyond automotive.
■ Investment View: Quarterly growth is not spectacular, but automotive recovery, strong China demand and the first real robotics revenue strengthen the long-term case.

EDA and IP

■ China: Proposed Chinese export rules could also restrict transfers of chip-design technology, making EDA part of the widening geopolitical risk around AI.
■ Cadence context: Previously reported strong EDA and IP growth remains useful background for the expansion of custom silicon, but falls outside the current news window.

AI infrastructure and financing

■ Microsoft: Microsoft can finance a substantial share of AI expansion from internal cash generation, materially reducing funding risk.
■ Alphabet: Alphabet shows that even a highly profitable technology company can generate negative free cash flow during an exceptionally intensive infrastructure cycle.
■ Oracle: Oracle has placed a clear upper limit on remaining external growth capital through FY2030 and aims to become entirely self-funded from FY2029.
■ ServiceNow (NOW): Subscription revenue increased 21% to $3.988 billion, total RPO 22% to $29.7 billion and the AI annual contract value target was increased to $1.7 billion.
■ Agentic AI: Production consumption of agentic AI at ServiceNow is more than thirteen times higher year to date than a year ago, providing important evidence that enterprise AI is moving from pilots into structural inference workloads.
■ Equinix: Annualized gross bookings reached a record $533 million, up 35%, and Equinix expects almost 40% more cabinets to be delivered than initially planned.
■ Google capacity: DigiTimes reports that usage of Google's latest frontier model has risen so quickly that cloud capacity is being prioritized more aggressively. The reported 25 trillion tokens in 72 hours is treated as a reported figure rather than an independently confirmed Google metric.
■ SK hynix context: An earlier SK hynix call cited market studies forecasting more than 60% CSP-capex growth in 2027, more than 100% growth in secured power capacity and roughly 40% annual AI-data-center infrastructure growth through 2030. These data fall outside the current window and are used only as structural context.
■ Private credit: Moody's warned earlier this week that AI financing is becoming an important growth engine for private credit and that 2027–2029 will bring a heavy refinancing period. The warning predates this 24-hour window and is used only as background.
■ PIK risk: According to the Moody's data supplied by the user, roughly 17% of 607 companies tracked pay part of their interest by increasing debt rather than fully in cash. For institutional investors, this is primarily relevant to weaker neocloud and infrastructure borrowers rather than cash-rich hyperscalers.

China and policy

■ CXMT: CXMT intends to begin limited HBM3E production despite reported yields of only around 20–30%, versus roughly 70% at SK hynix, limiting immediate high-end competitive pressure.
■ Long term: China is tolerating poor yields and high costs in order to build expertise and reduce reliance on foreign memory.
■ Export rules: China has published draft rules covering 23 AI-related technology categories, including advanced models, autonomous agents, chip-design tools and systems used to operate large-scale compute infrastructure.
■ Geopolitical shift: The technology conflict is becoming more two-sided. The US limits access to advanced hardware while China is beginning to protect selected AI technologies of its own.
■ Cambricon: Revenue and profit are growing rapidly, but management has previously denied issuing a one-million-chip shipment target, so we do not use that volume claim.

Upcoming earnings and key dates

■ STMicroelectronics: ST publishes Q3 results later this morning. Automotive, industrial, microcontrollers, power, inventories and guidance should indicate whether traditional end markets are recovering further. At the 06:55 CET cutoff, the new earnings release was not yet available on the official results page.
■ Intel: Intel reports after the US close. Server CPUs, Diamond Rapids, foundry, capex and margins are the main areas to watch.
■ Sandisk: Sandisk is the next major test for NAND, enterprise SSD and QLC.
■ Amazon: AWS growth, capex, Trainium, Inferentia and the relationship between proprietary silicon and NVIDIA are crucial for the custom-silicon thesis.
■ Apple: Results provide another read on smartphones, memory and other consumer semiconductors as component pricing increases.
■ Marvell / Lumentum: Any confirmation, valuation or financing structure around a potential transaction could immediately affect valuations across the optical supply chain.

Desk view

■ Positive: The physical AI cycle remains exceptionally strong and continues broadening. Samsung is selling HBM capacity years ahead, KLA benefits from rising process complexity, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is seeing record AI demand for MLCCs and substrates, and Vertiv, Flex, Equinix and GE Vernova confirm that the buildout is reaching deep into power, cooling and physical infrastructure.
■ Negative: Capital requirements are increasingly difficult to ignore. Alphabet is burning billions of free cash flow despite exceptional Cloud growth, Oracle still has to prove its future cash-flow targets, private-credit refinancing risk rises toward 2027–2029 and a potential Lumentum acquisition would probably require significant additional financing from Marvell.
■ Mixed: Memory fundamentals remain extremely strong and supply is tight, but record results are not always rewarded and China is investing aggressively in domestic capacity. We remain constructive on Micron and SK hynix but want a convincing technical base before increasing exposure materially.
■ What could change the picture: A clear slowdown in AWS, Azure or Google Cloud, lower HBM orders, rising memory inventories, weaker leading-edge equipment orders or problems financing data-center expansion would challenge the positive view. Strong results from STMicroelectronics, Intel, Sandisk and Amazon would instead confirm that the cycle is broadening further.
■ Conclusion: The past 24 hours strengthen the structural bull case for the semiconductor and AI-infrastructure chain, but make stock selection increasingly important. Demand for chips, memory, packaging, passive components, optics and power remains very strong. The next phase is less about who announces the most capex and more about who can convert scarce capacity into high margins, strong free cash flow and a balance sheet capable of funding the next investment cycle without persistent dilution.
