AMD investeert daarnaast $1 miljard in Meta’s aandelenuitgifte.
■ NVIDIA Vera: Oracle maakt aanvankelijk 150.000 Vera-CPU’s beschikbaar.

■ AAOI: Applied Optoelectronics profiteert vooral via optische modules.

■ NXP segmenten: Automotive groeide 13%, Industrial & IoT 39% en Communication Infrastructure & Other 54%.

■ Gemengd: Memory blijft fundamenteel sterk.

Semiconductor overview: ASMI and SK hynix confirm exceptionally strong AI chip demand

© 2026 SCEtrader.nl - All rights reserved.

ASM International and SK hynix provide the strongest evidence this morning that investment in AI infrastructure remains exceptionally powerful. ASMI delivered record revenue of €1.159 billion, maintained a 52.0% gross margin and expects fourth-quarter revenue of €1.23 billion plus or minus 5%. For 2027, the company now expects more than €5.7 billion of revenue, reaching a target originally set for 2030 three years early. SK hynix produced even more exceptional numbers: KRW104.6 trillion of revenue, KRW83.3 trillion of operating profit and an 80% operating margin. The company also says that, combining existing long-term agreements with specific customer discussions, DRAM and HBM volumes through 2029 are effectively sold out.

The strength is no longer confined to GPUs and HBM. TSMC is struggling to keep pace with CoWoS demand, Google is pushing TPU increasingly outside its own cloud, Oracle is building infrastructure where NVIDIA, Google, AMD and Intel can coexist, and Corning's Optical Communications revenue increased 44%. Teradyne also demonstrates that AI demand is spreading into memory test, hard-disk-drive test and high-speed interconnect. The cycle is therefore becoming broader but also more complex: bottlenecks are shifting into packaging, test, memory, substrates, optics and power delivery, while major customers increasingly deploy several chip architectures side by side.

■ ASM International (ASM): Revenue increased 45% to a record €1.159 billion. Gross margin remained at 52.0%, adjusted operating margin reached 33.4% and adjusted net earnings were €315 million. ASMI expects Q4 revenue of €1.23 billion plus or minus 5% and more than €5.7 billion in 2027. Advanced logic/foundry remains the primary growth engine, supported by strong 2nm investment, rising 3nm-to-5nm activity, the first meaningful 1.4nm contribution and strong demand for equipment used in HBM-related DRAM.
■ SK hynix: Quarterly revenue reached KRW104.6 trillion and operating profit KRW83.3 trillion. HBM4 is expected to overtake HBM3E in both volume and revenue from Q4. Long-term agreements with fourteen major customers already cover more than 50% of production capacity for 2027 and 2028, and management says DRAM and HBM volumes, including specific customer discussions, are effectively sold through 2029.
■ TSMC / CoWoS: Taiwanese reports indicate that TSMC is considering CoWoS price increases of up to 20%. Equipment lead times are also extending and testing next-generation AI chips requires substantially more time. Advanced packaging and test are therefore becoming increasingly important constraints even as TSMC expands capacity aggressively.
■ Google TPU: OpenAI plans to purchase TPUs directly from Google according to The Information, while Oracle will become the first major cloud provider outside Google itself to offer TPUs from 2027. Google is increasingly turning its proprietary AI processor from an internal technology into a commercial alternative to NVIDIA and other accelerators.
■ Teradyne (TER): Revenue increased 70% to $1.306 billion and adjusted EPS reached $2.29. Semiconductor Test generated $1.072 billion. Teradyne reported record Memory and Integrated Systems Test revenue and says AI demand now extends into memory testing, hard-disk-drive testing, high-speed interconnect and robotics.

Logic, foundry and advanced packaging

■ ASM International: Advanced logic/foundry again generated the strongest growth. Investment in 2nm remains high, activity at 3nm to 5nm is increasing and 1.4nm produced its first meaningful revenue contribution. ASMI expects further 2nm growth in 2027 and strong acceleration at 1.4nm.
■ ASMI market position: ASMI expects its served available market at 1.4nm to expand by a solid double-digit percentage compared with 2nm while the company also gains market share. That matters because deposition technology becomes increasingly important as transistor architectures become more complex.
■ Memory equipment: Memory revenue also grew strongly, particularly investments in DRAM required for HBM expansion. Tight memory supply is therefore directly translating into additional wafer-processing equipment demand.
■ ASMI outlook: ASMI expects approximately 35% full-year revenue growth at constant currencies and more than 40% equipment revenue growth in 2026. A new share repurchase program of up to €300 million also reflects the company's strong cash position.
■ TSMC / CoWoS: Supply-chain sources report that TSMC is considering 10%–20% increases for advanced packaging. TSMC itself has not confirmed the pricing move. The underlying direction is nevertheless clear: despite substantial expansion, CoWoS remains constrained as NVIDIA, custom AI-chip developers and new server processors all consume more packaging capacity.
■ Testing bottleneck: A Nomura estimate cited in Asian media suggests Blackwell final testing takes roughly four times as long as Hopper, while Rubin may require around seven times as much test time. Test capacity is therefore becoming an increasingly important constraint alongside packaging.
■ BESI: Applied Materials intends to increase its stake in BESI from roughly 9% to around 20%. The corporate announcement came just before the start of our research window, but the market reaction occurred during Tuesday's session, when BESI rallied sharply in Amsterdam. The transaction remains an important strategic endorsement of hybrid bonding and technologies that bring logic and memory closer together.

DRAM and HBM

■ SK hynix: HBM4 production is ramping rapidly at M15X and is expected to exceed HBM3E in both shipment volume and revenue from Q4. The company expects structural memory shortages to persist toward 2030.
■ Demand through 2029: SK hynix has long-term agreements with fourteen major customers covering more than 50% of total 2027 and 2028 production capacity. Including specific volumes currently under discussion with customers, management says DRAM and HBM are effectively sold out through 2029.
■ HBM demand: Requested HBM volumes are approximately twice the amount SK hynix can actually supply. This provides unusually strong demand visibility and supports pricing discipline.
■ Shareholders: SK hynix also announced approximately KRW100 trillion of shareholder returns for 2026. More than KRW30 trillion will come from dividends and more than KRW60 trillion from share repurchases and cancellations. A substantial portion of gains realized on its Kioxia investment will also be returned to shareholders.
■ Conventional DRAM: Contract prices are still expected to increase approximately 10%–15% in Q4. That is far slower than the extraordinary increases earlier in the year, but it remains a price increase and therefore does not indicate that a conventional memory downturn has already begun.
■ Allocations: Some customers may receive 30%–50% less memory than they request. This does not mean global DRAM production falls by the same amount. Suppliers are simply allocating more capacity toward HBM and premium server DRAM.
■ HBM displaces other products: HBM requires substantially more wafer capacity per unit of memory than conventional DRAM. New capacity can therefore be absorbed quickly by HBM without automatically producing a large surplus in conventional DRAM.
■ Rubin Ultra: NVIDIA is evaluating several HBM configurations for Rubin Ultra, according to TrendForce, including 8-Hi HBM4 and HBM4E alongside taller stacks. Published HBM4 bandwidth per Rubin GPU has also been reduced from 22 TB/s to 19.2 TB/s. Lower requirements could improve qualification rates and modestly reduce pressure on certain HBM configurations.
■ Investment View: The Rubin Ultra changes do not make us bearish on memory. They show that customers are actively trying to use scarce HBM more efficiently. At the same time, accelerator volumes, inference workloads and total memory content per system continue to rise. We remain fundamentally positive on Micron and SK hynix but want clear technical support, higher lows and an improving trend before materially increasing positions.

China and memory

■ Chinese cloud providers: Alibaba, Tencent and ByteDance are seeking long-term server DDR and LPDDR agreements with Samsung and SK hynix. Some customers reportedly want contracts extending to 2035, compared with typical terms of roughly three to five years. These remain negotiations rather than signed ten-year contracts.
■ Why China needs Korea: Chinese data centers have limited access to advanced foreign HBM because of US export controls but still require enormous amounts of conventional server DRAM. Samsung and SK hynix retain an important advantage in performance and reliability for demanding server environments.
■ CXMT: The Chinese DRAM producer plans to begin limited HBM3E production within roughly two months despite yields of only around 20%–30%. Reuters sources put comparable SK hynix yields at roughly 70%.
■ Technology gap: Current CXMT products reportedly perform closer to SK hynix's previous-generation HBM3 than to the latest HBM3E. Near-term competitive pressure at the high end therefore remains limited.
■ Long term: China is willing to tolerate poor yields and high production costs in order to build expertise. CXMT is not yet a direct high-end HBM threat, but it represents an important longer-term risk, particularly because the company is already much more advanced in conventional DRAM.

CPUs, custom silicon and cloud

■ Server CPUs: DigiTimes expects global server CPU shipments to reach 52.6 million units in 2027, up 45.7% from 2026. The forecast assumes x86 growth of 35.3% and Arm growth of 79.1%.
■ AMD and Intel: Intel is expected to remain the largest vendor by unit shipments with roughly 39% market share, while AMD rises to around 30.4%. AMD could nevertheless overtake Intel in server CPU revenue in 2027.
■ AMD / Meta: AMD Helios rack-scale systems are already running at Meta. EPYC processors support infrastructure behind Meta's Muse agent and the relationship also spans Instinct GPUs, Pensando networking and ROCm. AMD is also investing $1 billion in Meta's equity offering.
■ AMD / Oracle: Oracle will use 6th Gen EPYC in upcoming OCI Compute E7 instances. AMD Pensando DPUs also provide the foundation for Oracle Acceleron networking on AMD-powered systems, giving AMD exposure to both compute and infrastructure services.
■ Intel / Oracle: Oracle and Intel are planning a multiyear expansion of their collaboration. Future OCI X14 instances are expected to use Diamond Rapids, giving Intel an important role in enterprise AI and agent workloads even as AMD and Arm grow faster.
■ NVIDIA Vera: Oracle is initially making 150,000 Vera CPUs available. The processor targets CPU-intensive tasks surrounding AI agents, including code execution, retrieval, tool use and coordination of GPU workloads.
■ OpenAI / Google: OpenAI reportedly plans to purchase Google TPUs directly and is recruiting engineers to optimize frontier models for TPU. This is a meaningful signal that major AI developers deliberately want several compute architectures available.
■ Google / Oracle: OCI will become the first major cloud outside Google to offer TPUs from 2027. Google can therefore sell its own silicon to customers that do not want to migrate their entire infrastructure to Google Cloud.
■ Oracle / NVIDIA: Vera Rubin NVL72 and Vera CPUs will simultaneously scale to multi-gigawatt levels on OCI. Oracle also plans to offer HGX Rubin NVL8. Diversification toward TPU and other architectures therefore does not imply weaker absolute demand for NVIDIA systems.
■ Cerebras and SambaNova: Oracle will also offer inference systems from Cerebras and SambaNova. Inference is likely to become a more fragmented market than frontier-model training, with workload economics, latency and power use determining the winning architecture.

Optics and interconnect

■ Corning (GLW): Q3 Optical Communications sales increased 44% to $2.38 billion. Enterprise Networks grew 84% and Gen AI product sales more than doubled. This is one of the clearest fresh indicators that AI data-center expansion is feeding directly into optical infrastructure.
■ Optical tightness: The shift toward 800G and 1.6T is generating much stronger demand for EML, CW and other high-performance lasers. Production capacity for some products remains below demand and a rapid normalization is not expected.
■ Lumentum and Coherent: Both companies have direct exposure to high-performance laser components and InP technology. The transition to 200G per lane and eventually CPO increases technical requirements and the value of optical content inside each AI cluster.
■ AAOI: Applied Optoelectronics benefits more directly through optical modules. Its position differs from laser suppliers, but the same rise in required bandwidth supports module demand.
■ Broadcom and Marvell: Broadcom and Marvell benefit primarily through switches, DSPs and other silicon required to move data through AI clusters. The connectivity opportunity therefore extends far beyond optical lasers alone.
■ Caution on shipment forecasts: We have not independently verified the specific estimate that InP laser-chip shipments rise from 480 million in 2026 to 1.542 billion in 2028 from a sufficiently strong original source. The structural optics thesis is clear, but we do not publish that specific number as a verified fact.

Substrates and memory modules

■ SOCAMM3: South Korean substrate producer TLB is developing SOCAMM3 substrates with two major memory customers, according to DigiTimes. SOCAMM targets highly compact, power-efficient memory systems for AI servers and could become another growth area for specialized substrates.
■ ABF and T-Glass: DigiTimes identifies advanced-node capacity, T-Glass, ABF substrates and memory as possible limits to the strong server CPU growth expected in 2027. Bottlenecks are therefore moving increasingly outside the processor itself.
■ Implication: As CPUs, GPUs, custom ASICs and memory become larger and more complex, the economic value of the substrates and boards connecting them also rises. This part of the supply chain deserves more attention than it did during previous semiconductor cycles.

Test and storage

■ Teradyne (TER): Semiconductor Test generated $1.072 billion of the company's $1.306 billion quarterly revenue. Adjusted EPS was $2.29. Teradyne reported record Memory and Integrated Systems Test revenue and sees AI demand extending into HDD test, high-speed interconnect and robotics.
■ Teradyne outlook: Q4 revenue is expected at $1.25–1.35 billion with adjusted EPS of $1.95–2.25. The figures confirm that test is becoming structurally more important as chips and systems become more complex.
■ Seagate (STX): Revenue was approximately $4.2 billion, adjusted EPS reached $7.68 and free cash flow hit a record of roughly $1.5 billion. Non-GAAP gross margin reached 57.8%.
■ Seagate outlook: The company expects current-quarter revenue of $4.8 billion plus or minus $100 million and adjusted EPS of $9.20 plus or minus $0.20. Management sees a multi-year growth phase as more data are created, retained and reused.
■ HDD versus NAND: Strong Seagate results are not an automatic positive read-through for NAND. Nearline HDD and enterprise SSD serve overlapping data-center workloads but have very different supply, pricing and profitability dynamics. Sandisk reports Thursday and will provide the cleaner NAND test.

Automotive, industrial and power

■ NXP (NXPI): Q3 revenue increased 19% to $3.786 billion and adjusted EPS reached $4.20. Non-GAAP gross margin was 58.6% and free cash flow reached $1.21 billion.
■ NXP segments: Automotive grew 13%, Industrial & IoT 39% and Communication Infrastructure & Other 54%. The latter demonstrates that NXP is increasingly gaining exposure outside its traditional automotive base.
■ NXP outlook: Q4 revenue is expected at $3.75–3.95 billion and adjusted EPS at $4.14–4.58. NXP also increased its share repurchase authorization by $5 billion.
■ Volkswagen: The previously announced S32K5 partnership remains relevant context. Software-defined vehicles and zonal architectures can increase semiconductor content per vehicle even without rapid global vehicle-production growth.
■ Infineon (IFX): Infineon introduced a reference design for ±400 V and 800 V power distribution in AI racks and a separate 5.6 kW modular power-supply design for enterprise and edge-AI servers.
■ Power semiconductors: Higher power per rack creates increasing demand for efficient electricity conversion and distribution. AI therefore opens a larger market for SiC, GaN and advanced silicon devices alongside GPUs, memory and networking.

Upcoming earnings and key dates

■ Wednesday, October 28: ASMI holds its conference call at 15:00 CET. Teradyne discusses its results with analysts later today. KLA reports after the US market close. Microsoft and Alphabet also publish quarterly results.
■ Alphabet: Cloud growth, AI capex and the commercialization of TPU have become more important following the OpenAI and Oracle developments. External TPU demand will be a key issue.
■ Microsoft: Azure growth, data-center investment and Microsoft's use of proprietary silicon alongside NVIDIA will provide another important read on total AI infrastructure demand.
■ Thursday, October 29: Samsung Electronics publishes its full Q3 results and holds its conference call. HBM4, conventional DRAM, yields and competition with SK hynix are the main issues.
■ STMicroelectronics: ST reports before European trading begins. Automotive, industrial, microcontrollers and power need to show whether traditional end markets are recovering further.
■ Intel, Sandisk and Amazon: Intel provides another test of server CPUs and foundry, Sandisk of NAND and enterprise SSD, and Amazon of AWS capex, Trainium and the pace at which proprietary AI silicon is scaling alongside NVIDIA.

Desk view

■ Positive: ASMI and SK hynix provide powerful evidence that physical demand across leading-edge logic, HBM and server memory remains exceptionally strong. Corning, Teradyne, Oracle and CoWoS tightness show that the same growth is spreading through an increasingly broad section of the semiconductor chain.
■ Negative: The main risks are shifting toward cost, financing and execution. CoWoS, test, memory, substrates, optics and power infrastructure are all becoming more expensive or constrained, while hyperscalers must commit ever larger amounts of capital to sustain the expansion.
■ Mixed: Memory remains fundamentally attractive. Capacity is contracted years ahead and pricing is still rising, but customers are actively exploring more efficient memory configurations and China is working to close the technology gap. We remain positive on Micron and SK hynix but want a convincing technical base before increasing positions materially.
■ What could change the picture: A clear slowdown in hyperscaler capex, rapidly rising memory inventories, lower HBM orders or weaker leading-edge equipment demand would challenge the constructive view. Strong results from KLA, Alphabet, Microsoft, Samsung and Amazon could reinforce it further.
■ Conclusion: The latest data strengthen the structural bull case for the semiconductor chain. ASMI and SK hynix are at the center of that conclusion, but the broader message is that growth is spreading into packaging, test, CPUs, custom silicon, optics, substrates, storage and power. We remain constructive on the cycle while becoming more selective at the individual-stock level. The next phase will not be determined only by how much AI hardware is ordered, but by which companies can turn scarcity into high margins and sustainable free cash flow.
