Waarom chipaandelen toch corrigeren
Waarom wij ASMI graag terug willen
Daarnaast blijft ASMI investeren in innovatie.
■ China blijft belangrijk binnen mature logic/foundry.
Wij willen eerst rust in chipaandelen zien.
🔵 English version
ASMI after earnings: strong update, but we wait for chip stocks to turn
No time to read the full article? Use the five bullets below for the key points.
■ ASMI reported strong Q2 numbers, with record revenue of €1.003 billion and a gross margin of 51.9%.
■ Adjusted operating margin remained very high at 33.0% and free cash flow reached a record €355 million.
■ The Q3 and H2 outlook is strong: ASMI expects Q3 revenue of €1.1 billion and H2 revenue growth of more than 20% versus H1.
■ The 2027 outlook has effectively become more positive: ASMI now expects revenue to exceed the old top end of €4.6 billion.
■ Our Investment view on ASMI is positive, but we wait for chip stocks to stabilise before buying the stock again.
ASMI reported numbers that we view as good to strong. Revenue was ahead of expectations, margins remained high, cash flow was exceptionally strong and the second-half outlook is clearly positive. Still, timing is difficult because chip stocks as a group are correcting on doubts about the duration of the AI and semicapex cycle. For ASMI, we think that doubt is fundamentally overdone, but sentiment can still weigh on the stock in the short term.
Investment view
Our Investment view on ASMI is positive, but we are now waiting for chip stocks to stabilise before buying the stock again. ASM International reported numbers that we view as good. The underlying long-term trends appear to be gaining momentum now, as long as one believes in a further recovery in the semiconductor industry.
Fundamentally, ASMI is one of the better names in the European semiconductor chain. The company is exposed to exactly the areas where structural growth is strongest: advanced logic/foundry, ALD, Epi, HBM DRAM and AI-related semiconductor manufacturing. These are not temporary themes, but key parts of the next phase in chip production.
The stock closed around €756, after previously reaching a peak just below €1,100. An important lower VWAP zone is around €635. That means there is still room for technical volatility, but also that the stock could become interesting again after a deeper correction.
We would like to step back into ASM International, but we are waiting until the whole chip sector turns more convincingly. The numbers themselves signal that the stock can move higher later, but we do not want to force the momentum too early.
Chip stocks are correcting because investors are questioning whether strong growth can be sustained over a longer period. We think that doubt is not justified for ASMI when looking at order dynamics, technology position and guidance. But in the short term, the market does not only trade on fundamental quality. Sentiment, profit-taking and sector rotation can also pull strong stocks lower.
That is why we wait. Not because the numbers disappoint, but because we prefer to step back in when chip stocks stabilise. We think ASMI can eventually return to an upward trend, but first we want the sector to cooperate.
Extra points
■ Q2 revenue: €1.003 billion, above the midpoint of guidance.
■ Revenue growth: +20% reported and +24% at constant currency.
■ Gross margin: 51.9%, almost flat year over year and still very strong.
■ Adjusted operating result: €330.5 million.
■ Adjusted operating margin: 33.0%, close to the Q1 record level.
■ Adjusted net earnings: €292.9 million.
■ Free cash flow: record high at €355 million.
■ Cash position: €1.18 billion and no debt.
■ Q3 outlook: revenue of €1.1 billion plus or minus 5%.
■ Our stance: positive on ASMI, but waiting for calm in semiconductors.
Numbers and outlook
ASMI reported Q2 revenue of €1.003 billion. This was above the midpoint of its own guidance of €980 million plus or minus 5% at constant currency. Revenue increased 20% on a reported basis and 24% at constant currency.
Gross margin was 51.9%. That is almost unchanged from 51.8% a year earlier and only below 53.3% in Q1. For a company that is growing strongly while continuing to invest heavily in R&D, this is a strong margin signal.
Adjusted operating result was €330.5 million. Adjusted operating margin was 33.0%, compared with 31.5% in Q2 2025. This shows that ASMI is not only growing revenue, but also maintaining operating leverage.
Adjusted net earnings were €292.9 million, versus €173.0 million a year earlier. Free cash flow reached a new quarterly record of €355 million, helped by strong profitability and working capital normalisation after the build-up in Q1.
The outlook is strong. For Q3, ASMI expects revenue of €1.1 billion, plus or minus 5%, at constant currency. For the second half, ASMI expects revenue to increase by more than 20% compared with H1, also at constant currency.
Important: the 2027 outlook has not been raised with a new exact range, but the message has clearly become more positive. At the Investor Day in September 2025, ASMI gave a 2027 revenue target range of €3.7 billion to €4.6 billion. The company now says it expects 2027 revenue to exceed the top end of that old range. So this is effectively a positive revision to the medium-term outlook, even though no new specific 2027 range has been issued yet.
What does ASMI do?
ASMI makes machines and process solutions for wafer processing. This is a key part of semiconductor manufacturing. The company is particularly strong in ALD and Epi.
ALD stands for Atomic Layer Deposition. It allows extremely thin material layers to be deposited on a wafer with high precision. This becomes increasingly important as chips become smaller, more complex and more sensitive.
Epi stands for epitaxy. It is used to grow crystalline layers needed for certain chip structures. This technology also becomes more important in new generations of logic, foundry and memory.
So the core is not simply that ASMI makes “chip equipment”. ASMI provides technology needed to enable new chip architectures. As chips become more complex, demand rises for more layers, new materials and better process control. That is where ASMI’s structural strength lies.
Why the numbers are strong
The numbers are strong because growth, margin and cash flow are all good at the same time. That matters in semicap stocks. A revenue beat alone is not enough. We also want to see margins hold, R&D investment remain manageable and growth turn into cash.
ASMI delivers that. Revenue came in above expectations, gross margin remained well above 50%, operating margin remained around 33% and free cash flow was at a record level.
Revenue quality is also good. Growth was driven by strong demand and market share gains in advanced logic/foundry, robust growth in HBM DRAM and continued strong mature logic/foundry sales in China. Spares & Services also grew strongly, up 34% year over year at constant currency.
That last point matters. Spares & Services gives the revenue base a more recurring character and benefits from high fab utilisation among customers. This means ASMI is not only dependent on new equipment sales.
Why the outlook matters more than the beat
The real strength is not only in Q2, but in what ASMI says about H2 and 2027.
For H2, the company expects more than 20% revenue growth versus H1. This should be driven mainly by continued strong growth in leading-edge logic/foundry, initial contributions from the 1.4nm node, solid growth in memory and some recovery in power/analog/wafer from a low base. Mature logic/foundry should remain strong, but below the H1 level.
This matters because it shows that ASMI is not benefiting from just one quarter of demand. Order and customer visibility appear strong enough to support solid growth in the second half as well.
The 2027 message is even more important. ASMI says expectations for wafer fab equipment spending have increased significantly since the Investor Day. Because of strong order intake in H1, expected robust orders in H2 and visibility from customers, ASMI now expects to exceed the old 2027 top end of €4.6 billion in revenue.
That is fundamentally bullish. The company is not giving a new exact range yet, but the direction is clear: the old medium-term ambition is likely too low.
Why chip stocks are still correcting
The correction in chip stocks is not about ASMI alone. The market is questioning the length of the AI investment cycle. Investors are asking whether the huge investments in data centers, AI chips, memory and production capacity can continue at this pace for several years.
That doubt can temporarily pressure all semicap names. Even companies that are performing well. That is exactly the risk for ASMI. The numbers are strong, but if the sector is risk-off, the stock may still struggle to extend gains immediately.
We believe this doubt is too heavy for ASMI fundamentally. The company is not only benefiting from AI as a theme, but from real production technology needed for smaller nodes, GAA architectures, HBM DRAM and more complex chip structures. These are structural drivers.
But timing remains important. A strong company can still fall if investors reduce sector risk broadly. That is why we do not want to buy too early.
Technical picture: share price, peak and VWAP zone
The stock closed around €756. That is clearly below the earlier peak just under €1,100. The stock has therefore already corrected sharply, but that does not automatically mean the bottom is in.
An important lower VWAP zone is around €635. That zone may become relevant if the sector correction deepens and ASMI is pulled lower despite strong numbers. Fundamentally, that would feel painful, but technically it could create a more interesting entry area.
For now, we do not want to guess the exact bottom. We want to see the chip sector stabilise and ASMI attract buyers again on higher lows. That would increase the probability that the stock is turning back into an upward trend.
Why we want ASMI back
ASMI is exactly the type of stock we want to own again once chip stocks stabilise.
The reason is the quality of the business. ASMI has a leading position in ALD, a growing position in Epi, a strong balance sheet, high margins and direct exposure to the most advanced parts of the semiconductor cycle. The company had €1.18 billion in cash at the end of Q2 and no debt.
ASMI also continues to invest in innovation. Adjusted net R&D expenses rose to €111.7 million in Q2. This does not put too much pressure on margins in the short term, but it supports the technology lead over the longer term.
So for us, this is not a stock to abandon because of a sector correction. On the contrary. If the sector stabilises and ASMI forms a technical base, it can again become one of the more attractive European semiconductor names.
Critical note
The numbers are strong, but the market will not automatically reward everything.
■ Chip stocks are correcting on doubts about the durability of the AI and semicapex cycle.
■ We think that doubt is overdone for ASMI, but it can still affect the share price in the short term.
■ The stock has already corrected sharply from the peak just below €1,100, but a lower VWAP zone around €635 remains technically relevant.
■ 2027 expectations are moving higher, which also raises the bar.
■ China remains important in mature logic/foundry.
■ The H2 outlook is firm and now needs to be delivered.
The key nuance is therefore timing. Fundamentally, ASMI looks strong. Technically, we first want to see stabilisation in the sector.
What we want to see
We first want to see calm in chip stocks. Not just one green day, but clearer evidence that selling pressure in semicap names is fading.
Then we look for three fundamental confirmations. Q3 revenue should move toward the €1.1 billion guidance. H2 growth of more than 20% versus H1 must remain credible. And order dynamics around leading-edge logic/foundry, HBM DRAM, ALD and Epi need to remain strong.
If that coincides with a technical bottom in the stock, we want to take another close look at ASMI for a position.
Risks
The first risk is sector stress. If chip stocks correct further, ASMI can be dragged lower despite strong numbers.
The second risk is that investors continue to question the duration of the AI investment cycle.
The third risk is that China exposure keeps influencing sentiment, especially as mature logic/foundry remains an important contributor.
The fourth risk is that the stronger 2027 message quickly raises the bar.
The fifth risk is timing. Buying too early in a weak semiconductor market can hurt temporarily, even with a good company.
Conclusion
ASMI delivered strong numbers. Revenue, margins, earnings and free cash flow show that the company is fundamentally performing well.
Our Investment view on ASMI is positive, but we are now waiting for chip stocks to stabilise. The Q3 and H2 outlook is strong and the 2027 message is clearly more positive than the old target range suggested.
We would like to own ASM International again once the sector turns convincingly. It is still too early to force momentum. But if chip stocks stabilise, ASMI can again become one of the most attractive European semiconductor stocks.
