NEAR wil een alternatief bieden voor een toekomst waarin kunstmatige intelligentie (AI) wordt gedomineerd door enkele grote technologiebedrijven. In plaats daarvan ontwikkelt het een gedecentraliseerde infrastructuur waarin gebruikers hun data en hun AI-agents zelf beheren.

Ondanks dit ambitieuze doel bevindt NEAR zich pas op de 34e plaats in de cryptomarkt, met een koers die de afgelopen vier jaar grotendeels vlak bleef. Volgens de auteurs onderschatten beleggers daarmee een van de meest asymmetrische kansen in de markt.

Doelstelling NEAR

Het uiteindelijke doel van NEAR is om de blockchain voor AI te worden.

De oprichters, waaronder Illia Polosukhin (mede-auteur van het invloedrijke artikel Attention is All You Need), zien een toekomst waarin miljarden AI-agents taken uitvoeren. Dat varieert van eenvoudige zaken zoals het reserveren van een taxi tot complexe activiteiten zoals het beheer van een beleggingsportefeuille of internationale logistiek.

Omdat deze agents volledig digitaal zijn, hebben ze een infrastructuur nodig die betrouwbaar, veilig en schaalbaar is. Volgens NEAR kan een blockchain die rol vervullen, mits deze voldoende snelheid en capaciteit biedt en tegelijkertijd gedecentraliseerd blijft.

De belofte van NEAR is dat gebruikers zelf eigenaar blijven van hun data, hun agents en de logica waarmee die agents werken. Daarmee positioneert NEAR zich als tegenhanger van bedrijven zoals OpenAI, Google en Microsoft, die AI vooral in gesloten ecosystemen aanbieden.

Technische roadmap Crawl, Walk, Run

Phase 1: Crawl

De eerste fase draaide om het bouwen van een schaalbare Layer 1-blockchain.

NEAR koos voor sharding: het opdelen van de blockchain in meerdere parallelle onderdelen die transacties onafhankelijk verwerken. Dat maakt horizontale schaalbaarheid mogelijk en voorkomt congestie.

De prestaties zijn sterk: blokbevestigingen binnen 600 milliseconden, finaliteit na gemiddeld 1,2 seconden en transactiekosten lager dan 0,2 cent. Daarmee overtreft NEAR grote namen als Ethereum en Solana. Bovendien heeft het netwerk sinds de lancering vrijwel 100 procent uptime gehad.

Phase 2: Walk

De tweede fase richt zich op een omgeving die geschikt is voor AI-agents.

Dat is nodig omdat de huidige Web3-ervaring vaak omslachtig is. Denk aan moeizame wallet-interacties of het uitvoeren van meerdere stappen voor een simpele transactie. Voor autonome AI-agents vormt dat een groot obstakel.

NEAR introduceerde daarom Chain Signatures, waarmee transacties tussen verschillende blockchains mogelijk worden, en Intents, waarbij gebruikers of agents een gewenst resultaat aangeven zonder zelf de route te bepalen. Solvers in het netwerk vinden en voeren de optimale uitvoering uit.

Phase 3: Run

De derde fase is het einddoel: een infrastructuur waarin AI-agents autonoom kunnen opereren, waarbij privacy, datacontrole en transparantie zijn gewaarborgd.

Belangrijke bouwstenen zijn Decentralized Confidential Machine Learning, Model Context Protocol en Agent SDK’s. Hiermee wil NEAR een open ecosysteem scheppen waarin AI-agents zelfstandig en veilig taken uitvoeren.

Innovaties en technische oplossingen

NEAR onderscheidt zich van andere blockchains met innovatieve oplossingen.

Sharding maakt het mogelijk om onbeperkt capaciteit toe te voegen door het netwerk in stukken te verdelen. Dit gaat verder dan de plannen die Ethereum ooit had maar niet volledig realiseerde. Met dynamic resharding wil NEAR automatisch capaciteit bijschakelen als de vraag toeneemt.

Chain Signatures lossen de fragmentatie in de cryptowereld op door transacties tussen verschillende blockchains te vereenvoudigen. Dit is essentieel in een toekomst waar AI-agents op meerdere ecosystemen tegelijk actief zijn.

Intents verminderen de complexiteit van blockchaininteracties drastisch. Een intent wordt automatisch vertaald naar de meest efficiënte uitvoering. Dit opent de deur naar nieuwe toepassingen, van eenvoudige tokenwissels tot complexe financiële herstructureringen.

Adoptie vandaag

Hoewel de AI-component nog in ontwikkeling is, heeft NEAR al een grote gebruikersbasis.

Volgens het rapport zijn er inmiddels 47 miljoen maandelijkse actieve adressen. Voorbeelden van toepassingen zijn:

Abound: een platform voor remittances dat Indiërs in de VS koppelt aan meer dan 130 Indiase banken en 4000 retailers. Het heeft meer dan 150 miljoen dollar aan transacties verwerkt.

Infinex: een self-custody wallet die binnen korte tijd groeide naar 100.000 gebruikers en een total value locked van 500 miljoen dollar.

SWEAT: een populaire fitness-app die gebruikers beloont voor beweging. Het platform heeft 20 miljoen NEAR-wallets en meer dan een miljoen actieve gebruikers per maand.

KaiKai: een AI-gestuurde lockscreen-app die vooraf geïnstalleerd is op smartphones van merken als Oppo, Xiaomi en OnePlus in Azië, Latijns-Amerika en Afrika.

HOT Wallet: een trading-app geïntegreerd in Telegram, met 3 miljoen maandelijkse gebruikers en 1,4 miljoen dagelijkse actieve gebruikers.

Langetermijnvisie

Het uiteindelijke perspectief van NEAR is een wereld waarin miljarden AI-agents zelfstandig transacties uitvoeren.

In tegenstelling tot gecentraliseerde modellen zoals die van OpenAI en Google behouden gebruikers volledige controle over hun data en beslissingslogica.

Dit moet voorkomen dat AI, net als sociale media of zoekmachines, volledig wordt geconcentreerd bij enkele machtige bedrijven.

Tokenomics

Het economische model van NEAR verschilt wezenlijk van dat van Ethereum.

Waar Ethereum waarde laat terugvloeien via gas fees die worden verbrand, legt NEAR de nadruk op waardecreatie door activiteiten:

• Intent fees: kosten op transacties en intent-routing, waarbij opbrengsten direct naar het protocol gaan.
• Agent infrastructuur: inkomsten uit rekenkracht, opslag en messaging die nodig zijn voor het functioneren van AI-agents.
• AI-modellen: micropayments voor modeltraining en -uitvoering.

Dit maakt NEAR tot een binaire investering: of het protocol groeit uit tot de coördinatielaag van een AI-gedreven economie, of het blijft steken in beperkte toepassingen en verliest grotendeels zijn waarde.

Waardering

Het rapport werkt drie scenario’s uit voor 2030.

Bear case: $1,63 per token (–24 procent). Dit scenario gaat uit van beperkte adoptie, waarbij AI-agents vooral via centrale platforms opereren en NEAR geen groot marktaandeel verovert.

Base case: $155,85 per token (+7.100 procent). Hierin slaagt NEAR erin om 2 procent van een wereldwijde agentmarkt van 16,4 miljard agents aan zich te binden. Dat levert miljarden transacties per jaar op.

Max case: $562,81 per token (+26.100 procent). Dit scenario veronderstelt dat NEAR de dominante settlementlaag wordt voor AI-gedreven transacties en een rol krijgt vergelijkbaar met Visa in de traditionele betaalwereld.

Risico’s

De risico’s zijn aanzienlijk.

Het project is technisch complex, moet brede adoptie realiseren en opereert in een veld waar zowel andere blockchains als grote technologiebedrijven actief zijn.

Het profiel is uitgesproken binair: groot succes of vrijwel geen waarde. Voor beleggers betekent dit dat de kans op forse winsten hand in hand gaat met een reëel risico op verlies van het geïnvesteerde kapitaal.

Conclusie

Het rapport van Bitwise toont NEAR als een van de meest ambitieuze projecten in de cryptomarkt.

Met zijn innovatieve technologie, duidelijke roadmap en radicale visie op AI en decentralisatie kan NEAR in de komende tien jaar uitgroeien tot een kernspeler in de digitale economie.

This article is based on an investment report from Bitwise Asset Management, one of the world’s largest specialized crypto asset managers. The report was authored by Ayush Tripathi (Research Analyst), Matt Hougan (Chief Investment Officer) and André Dragosch (Head of Research Europe). It is written for professional investors and outlines the investment case for NEAR, positioning itself as the blockchain for artificial intelligence.

According to the authors, this reflects a major underestimation of one of the most asymmetric opportunities in digital assets.

NEAR’s objective

The ultimate goal of NEAR is to become the blockchain for AI.

The founders, including Illia Polosukhin (co-author of the seminal paper Attention is All You Need), envision a future where billions of AI agents perform tasks on behalf of users. These can range from simple everyday activities, such as booking a ride, to complex responsibilities, such as managing an investment portfolio or coordinating global logistics.

As these agents are entirely digital, they require an equally digital foundation that is scalable, secure, and decentralized. NEAR proposes that its blockchain can serve this role. Its central promise is that users remain the owners of their data, their agents, and the underlying logic. This stands in stark contrast to the model of centralized AI platforms dominated by companies like OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.

Technical roadmap: Crawl, Walk, Run

Phase 1: Crawl

The first phase focused on building a scalable Layer 1 blockchain.

NEAR implemented sharding – splitting the network into parallel segments that can process transactions independently. This enables horizontal scalability and avoids network congestion.

The performance results are impressive: block confirmations in 600 milliseconds, finality in just 1.2 seconds, and transaction costs below $0.002. This makes NEAR faster and cheaper than Ethereum and Solana, with nearly 100 percent uptime since launch.

Phase 2: Walk

The second phase is about making the blockchain environment suitable for AI agents.

Current Web3 experiences are often cumbersome. Wallet interactions are slow, and even simple tasks require multiple steps. Such frictions are unacceptable for autonomous AI agents.

NEAR addressed this by introducing Chain Signatures, which enable cross-chain transactions, and Intents, a system where users or agents specify their desired outcome rather than the transaction path. Solvers then execute the optimal route. This lowers barriers to adoption and makes full automation possible.

Phase 3: Run

The third phase represents the ultimate vision: an ecosystem where AI agents operate autonomously while ensuring privacy, transparency, and user data sovereignty.

Core components include Decentralized Confidential Machine Learning (training and executing AI models without exposing data), Model Context Protocol (enabling collaboration without data sharing), and Agent SDKs (development kits to build AI agents as easily as mobile apps).

Innovations and technical solutions

NEAR differentiates itself with several innovations:

• Sharding: Horizontal scalability through splitting the network. Unlike Ethereum, which never fully implemented this, NEAR has already deployed sharding successfully. Dynamic resharding is planned to automatically adjust capacity to demand.
• Chain Signatures: A breakthrough for interoperability, enabling seamless transactions across multiple blockchains. This is vital for AI agents expected to operate across ecosystems.
• Intents: A mechanism that drastically reduces complexity. Rather than executing steps manually, users and agents submit an intent, which is automatically optimized. This transforms user experience and opens the door to sophisticated financial and operational use cases.

Adoption today

Although AI-specific applications are still developing, NEAR already has strong adoption metrics. The network reports more than 47 million monthly active addresses.

Key use cases include:

• Abound: A remittance platform for Indian expatriates in the U.S., connected to over 130 Indian banks and 4,000 retailers, processing more than $150 million in transfers.
• Infinex: A self-custody wallet launched in April 2025, quickly scaling to 100,000 users and $500 million in total value locked (TVL).
• SWEAT: A move-to-earn fitness app with 150 million Web2 users, 20 million wallets on NEAR, and over 1 million monthly active users.
• KaiKai: An AI-powered lockscreen app pre-installed on smartphones from major brands such as Oppo, Xiaomi, and OnePlus across Asia, Latin America, and Africa.
• HOT Wallet: A trading app integrated into Telegram, with 3 million monthly users and 1.4 million daily actives.

These applications, though not directly AI-related, prove NEAR’s ability to scale and handle large, recurring user flows – a strong foundation for the AI phase.

Long-term vision

The long-term perspective is a world where billions of AI agents conduct transactions and coordination via NEAR.

Unlike centralized AI models, NEAR’s approach ensures users retain ownership and control. This model addresses growing concerns about privacy, transparency, and the concentration of power in the digital economy.

Tokenomics

NEAR’s economic model is fundamentally different from Ethereum’s.

Where Ethereum accrues value through gas fees, NEAR is designed to capture value via:

• Intent fees: Costs charged on intent execution and routing.
• Agent infrastructure: Revenues from compute, storage, and messaging needed by AI agents.
• AI models: Micropayments for model training and execution.

This creates a binary investment profile: either NEAR becomes the coordination layer of the AI economy, or it fails to gain adoption and its value collapses.

Valuation

The Bitwise report develops three scenarios for 2030:

• Bear case: $1.63 per token (–24%). Limited adoption, with centralized AI platforms dominating the landscape.

Risks

The risks are substantial. NEAR faces high technical complexity, adoption challenges, and competition not only from other blockchains but also from Big Tech.

Its profile is highly binary: either NEAR achieves massive success, or it fails to create lasting value. Investors must weigh the potential for outsized returns against the real risk of capital loss.

Conclusion

The Bitwise report positions NEAR as one of the most ambitious projects in the digital asset space.

With strong technological foundations, an innovative roadmap, and a radical vision combining AI and decentralization, NEAR could emerge as a key layer of the digital economy over the next decade.
