■ NVIDIA / Vera: Zeer positief.
■ Amazon / Trainium: Strategisch belangrijk.
■ Micron: Grootste directe supply-risico.
Alternatieve AI-chips: Tenstorrent krijgt $1,5 miljard extra slagkracht
■ IPO-vraag: De institutionele plaatsing was bijna 389 maal overtekend.
■ Japan: De Nikkei verliest circa 1,0%.
■ Europa: Euro Stoxx 50-futures staan ongeveer 0,6% lager, DAX-futures 0,3% en FTSE-futures ongeveer 0,5%.
■ VS: S&P 500-futures staan slechts rond 0,1% hoger.
Komende dagen
■ SpaceX: Vandaag volgen cijfers.
■ Memory: Het directe risico is Micron Taiwan.
■ Servers: Hoge omzetgroei alleen is onvoldoende.

Elice plunges on debut as NVIDIA attacks x86 and Micron faces strike risk: AI trade shifts from beta to selection
© 2026 SCEtrader.nl - All rights reserved.
Tuesday, October 20, 2026
Research window: October 19, 08:08 through October 20, 08:08, Amsterdam time.
The US semiconductor sector rebounded Monday after eight consecutive declining sessions, but Asia refuses to confirm the move Tuesday morning. South Korea's KOSPI is down roughly 3.9%, Japan's Nikkei around 1.0%, Euro Stoxx 50 futures approximately 0.6% lower and S&P 500 futures only slightly higher. Our direction therefore remains neutral to mildly negative. Forced selling has eased, but investors are not yet rebuilding broad AI exposure.
Underneath the market, physical demand remains strong. NVIDIA is opening a fresh front against Intel and AMD with Vera, Amazon is using TorchNeuron to reduce the software barrier around CUDA and Tenstorrent has raised $1.5 billion for an alternative RISC-V/AI stack. At the same time, capital is being priced much more critically: Elice receives a severe IPO discount, CoreWeave continues to fund at distressed yields, Nscale still needs to finance and build enormous commitments and Micron now faces a concrete strike risk in Taiwan. The market is moving from broad AI beta toward selection based on technology, financing, supply and cash conversion.
■ Market picture: Neutral to mildly negative. The US rebound was constructive, but South Korea, Japan and European futures still provide no convincing follow-through.
■ Elice: Major theme. The South Korean AI cloud and data-center company falls roughly 30% on debut despite an institutional book almost 389 times covered and sharply improved operating results.
■ NVIDIA / Vera: Very positive. Modal adds NVIDIA as a third CPU platform after Vera processed roughly twice as much work in specific agentic-AI workloads as the Intel and AMD systems used in its fleet.
■ Amazon / Trainium: Strategically important. TorchNeuron reduces the software friction involved in moving PyTorch workloads to Trainium and directly challenges one of NVIDIA's strongest competitive advantages.
■ Micron: The largest immediate supply risk. The Taoyuan union has announced an actual strike for Thursday, while Taichung remains in negotiations.
■ AI infrastructure: Nscale is discussing another roughly $45 billion of Anthropic capacity while CoreWeave, despite an analyst upgrade, still trades with distressed funding costs.
■ Memory: UBS expects Kioxia to retain very strong NAND margins and sees memory absorbing an increasing share of total hyperscaler investment.
■ Optics: The 800G and 1.6T volume curve remains exceptionally strong. Monday's rally in AAOI, Lumentum and Coherent shows markets again differentiating broad AI valuations from genuinely scarce bandwidth capacity.
■ Equipment: Lam Research and BESI face the main burden of proof this week. Following the equity correction, investors need to see whether orders have held up much better than share prices.
Compute and custom silicon: NVIDIA attacks x86 while Amazon attacks CUDA
■ NVIDIA Vera: AI cloud platform Modal will deploy Vera for agentic-AI workloads, adding NVIDIA as a third CPU platform alongside Intel and AMD.
■ Performance: For the tested long-running AI agents, Vera processed roughly twice as much work as Modal's existing Intel and AMD systems.
■ Not winner-takes-all: Modal retains Intel and AMD and intends to run each workload on the best-performing platform. New x86 generations will be tested again.
■ Strategic value: NVIDIA does not need to displace Intel and AMD. Every CPU workload won increases the amount of compute, networking and software NVIDIA can deliver inside the same AI system.
■ Amazon: TorchNeuron lets existing PyTorch code run on Trainium with minimal modifications.
■ Software moat: Software friction has been one of the largest obstacles to alternative AI chips. Amazon is now attempting to compete not only through cheaper hardware but through a comparable developer experience.
■ Open source: TorchNeuron will be free and open source and is already being tested by dozens of early adopters.
■ Cloud economics: AWS does not need to earn NVIDIA-like accelerator margins if lower compute costs improve overall AWS economics and customer retention.
■ Broadcom / Marvell: More hyperscaler-owned silicon supports custom ASIC design, SerDes, high-speed interconnect, memory interfaces and advanced packaging.
■ Conclusion: Competition is shifting from standalone chips toward complete platforms. Performance, software compatibility, networking and total cost of ownership increasingly determine the winner.
Alternative AI chips: Tenstorrent gets $1.5 billion of additional firepower
■ Tenstorrent: The company has raised $1.5 billion at a $6.2 billion post-money valuation.
■ Galaxy: New capital will be used to scale Galaxy AI servers and the underlying chips and software.
■ RISC-V: Tenstorrent combines accelerators with CPU IP built around the open RISC-V architecture, offering a different route from NVIDIA's closed stack.
■ Market: Tenstorrent does not need to defeat NVIDIA in broad hyperscale training. Sovereign AI, automotive, specialised inference and customers seeking a second supplier already represent sizeable opportunities.
■ Capital: The round shows private investors remain willing to commit large sums to serious hardware challengers despite the correction in listed AI equities.
■ Conclusion: The total AI-chip market is becoming larger and more multipolar. NVIDIA revenue can continue to grow strongly even as the number of credible alternatives increases.
Intel: CPU opportunity improves while Foundry remains a very long-duration project
■ Intel: Lip-Bu Tan makes clear that a genuinely competitive external foundry cannot be built in only a few years and uses TSMC's ten-to-twenty-year development path as the benchmark.
■ Government support: The combination of huge capital requirements and long payback periods makes sustained US government support important.
■ Foundry versus turnaround: Operating restructuring can produce results relatively quickly while building a global foundry franchise takes much longer.
■ Advanced packaging: Intel may gain earlier traction in advanced AI packaging and custom ASICs, where existing capabilities can be commercialised sooner.
■ CPU: Vera simultaneously opens a new competitive front in the traditional Intel/AMD market.
■ China: Tan also warns that China is technologically less far behind than commonly assumed.
■ View: Intel becomes more interesting as execution improves, but Foundry should be valued as a long-duration option. CPU, packaging and custom silicon can create value sooner.
AI infrastructure and capital markets: Elice, Nscale and CoreWeave deliver three different warnings
■ Elice Group: Shares lost roughly 30% on their first KOSDAQ session from the 90,500 won IPO price to around 63,600 won.
■ IPO demand: The institutional placement was almost 389 times covered. The weak debut therefore reflects a sharp repricing of AI-infrastructure risk rather than weak demand during bookbuilding.
■ Elice fundamentals: First-half revenue tripled to roughly 34 billion won and the company swung to around 10 billion won of operating profit. Even that improvement was insufficient to offset the higher risk premium.
■ Nscale / Anthropic: Nscale is discussing a second cloud deal with Anthropic worth roughly $45 billion. The planned second Monarch facility in West Virginia would be approximately 460 MW and use NVIDIA Vera Rubin.
■ Contract value: Nscale has rapidly increased total contracted value beyond $100 billion. That demonstrates exceptional demand but does not reveal how much capital is required to convert commitments into operational capacity.
■ Microsoft: The withdrawal from Loughton concerns one site. Microsoft remains committed to the wider relationship, while Nscale is exploring alternative energy sources for the location.
■ CoreWeave: Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock to Buy on Monday, but shares failed to retain the initial rally.
■ CoreWeave credit: The 2031 bond yield did ease from above 16% to around 15.1%, but that remains an exceptionally high financing cost.
■ Interpretation: Elice shows what equity markets demand, CoreWeave what bond markets demand and Nscale how much execution is required before contract value becomes cash flow.
■ Conclusion: Compute demand is not the weak point. The economic question is who can finance, build and operate that compute at acceptable capital costs.
Hyperscaler financing: true AI leverage may exceed what is immediately visible
■ S&P Global: The ratings agency warns that major hyperscalers probably carry more AI-related obligations than public balance sheets directly reveal.
■ Structures: Guarantees, leases, project financing and relationships with data-center developers and smaller AI firms can create economic leverage outside traditional corporate debt.
■ Top six: Amazon, Microsoft, Alphabet, Oracle, Meta and SpaceX could collectively spend more than $7 trillion on AI-related capex between 2025 and 2030.
■ Free cash flow: The group is expected to remain collectively free-cash-flow negative at least through next year.
■ Ratings: There is no case for broad downgrades yet, but returns on AI investment are becoming more important to credit quality.
■ New market hurdle: Five major AI hyperscalers are expected to spend roughly $1.2 trillion combined next year. Markets increasingly want proof that each incremental dollar earns more than its cost of capital.
■ Conclusion: The dividing line is not Big Tech versus neoclouds. It is between companies with enough structural cash flow to carry AI investment internally and those dependent on continuous external capital.
Memory: Micron now has a real strike date
■ Micron Technology: The Taoyuan union has announced an actual strike for Thursday.
■ Taichung: Mediation continues at Micron's most important Taiwan manufacturing site and no strike has been called there.
■ HBM / DRAM: Taiwan is critical to both product categories, making genuine output disruption immediately relevant to available supply.
■ Nuance: No production loss has yet been confirmed, so current supply estimates remain unchanged.
■ Asymmetry: High-end memory has little spare capacity. Even limited disruption can therefore have a greater effect on allocations and pricing than during a normal cycle.
■ Near term: This is now the most important concrete supply event in memory. Future Chinese capacity matters more for 2027 and 2028; Taiwan labour action can matter this week.
NAND and storage: Kioxia operates on a different cycle from DRAM
■ Kioxia: UBS expects Kioxia to maintain industry-leading NAND margins through 2026 and 2027 because of structurally favourable manufacturing cost per GB.
■ Supply: UBS expects NAND to remain tight through 2027 and sees the strongest sequential pricing increases only toward late 2027.
■ Cost leadership: In a rising price environment, structurally lower cost translates directly into stronger margin leverage.
■ AI storage: AI requires much more than HBM. Training datasets, checkpoints, retrieval, vector databases and inference all increase enterprise-SSD demand.
■ Sandisk: Sandisk's involvement in Tenstorrent is also interesting as storage vendors move closer to the full AI stack.
■ Risk: NAND remains more cyclical than HBM. Pricing can reverse quickly once bit output grows faster than enterprise-storage demand.
■ View: Kioxia deserves separate analysis. The thesis is cost leadership inside a tight physical NAND market rather than the same technology moat as HBM.
Memory intensity: a rising share of the AI budget moves toward memory
■ Hyperscalers: UBS raises memory's expected share of capex among the twelve largest hyperscalers in 2027 from 63% to 66%.
■ Around $961 billion: The bank associates roughly $961 billion with the estimate. This is a UBS estimate rather than formal hyperscaler guidance.
■ Mix shift: HBM, conventional server DRAM, NAND, controllers and packaging represent an increasing share of total system value.
■ Bandwidth: More accelerators without corresponding memory-bandwidth growth do not produce comparable system-performance gains.
■ Supply response: Attractive economics naturally draw additional investment from Samsung, SK hynix, Micron, Kioxia and Chinese producers.
■ View: The memory case remains strong while demand grows faster than capacity and bit productivity. Today's huge investments ultimately also lay the foundation for the next supply cycle.
Optics and networking: bandwidth becomes a physical capacity cycle
■ Applied Optoelectronics: Channel checks indicate 800G unit volume could rise from roughly 600,000-700,000 this year to around 5 million next year and roughly 7 million the following year.
■ 1.6T: Demand is expected to move toward roughly 100,000 units per month next year, versus several tens of thousands currently.
■ AWS / Oracle: AWS remains the principal demand source while Oracle grows in importance. Exact shipment figures are channel estimates rather than formal company guidance.
■ Lumentum: Monday's rally again focused attention on physical scarcity in lasers and other high-end optical components.
■ Coherent: Integrated CPO/NPO solutions also gain importance as network architectures move toward 1.6T and beyond.
■ Broadcom / Arista: More heterogeneous accelerator architectures raise the value of switching, congestion management and Ethernet fabrics.
■ Marvell: SerDes, custom interconnect and memory fabrics gain importance as compute and memory are distributed across larger clusters.
■ Bottleneck: Constraints extend beyond finished transceivers. Lasers, optical engines, silicon photonics, packaging and test all need to scale simultaneously.
■ View: Networking and optics are no longer simple derivatives of GPU volume. Bandwidth is becoming an independent physical bottleneck inside the AI rack.
Test and inspection: higher package value makes yield increasingly important
■ HBM: More dies per stack, higher power density and more complex interfaces increase test intensity.
■ 1.6T / CPO: Faster optical links require greater calibration, burn-in, optical measurement and more complex final testing.
■ Yield: The more economic value concentrated inside one package, the more expensive late-stage defect discovery becomes.
■ Advantest / Teradyne: This supports companies capable of combining high-speed electrical, thermal and optical measurement.
■ Advanced packaging: Test increasingly moves closer to packaging and becomes less of an isolated final production step.
■ View: Test intensity can grow faster than semiconductor unit volumes, keeping test an understated but high-quality second-order AI exposure.
AI servers and racks: revenue growth ultimately needs to become cash
■ Dell / HPE / Super Micro: The US server group rebounded Monday alongside the broader AI hardware trade.
■ Architecture: Vera, Trainium, custom accelerators and multiple network stacks increase the number of rack configurations vendors must design and qualify.
■ Power / cooling: Higher rack density simultaneously increases liquid-cooling and power-infrastructure content per system.
■ Super Micro: Working capital and inventory remain important. Exceptional revenue growth only creates shareholder value when sales convert into cash.
■ Dell / HPE: Attention is likewise shifting from revenue growth alone toward margin quality, supply-chain execution and cash conversion.
■ View: AI-server demand can remain extremely strong while shareholder returns vary significantly across suppliers.
Foundry and industrial policy: new fabs continue to create equipment demand
■ Japan / US: Fresh policy analysis highlights how Japan is simultaneously rebuilding domestic semiconductor capability and directing capital toward additional US manufacturing.
■ GlobalFoundries: Under the existing framework, Japan can contribute up to $21 billion toward two new GlobalFoundries fabs in New York.
■ Tokyo Electron: US fab expansion can benefit Japanese equipment suppliers even when wafers are manufactured outside Japan.
■ Renesas: Additional mature- and specialty-node capacity can also matter to Japanese chip designers and industrial customers.
■ Rapidus: Japan is simultaneously developing domestic leading-edge capacity while supporting local production by TSMC, Micron and Kioxia.
■ View: Reshoring remains net positive for global semiconductor capex. Equipment companies can offer a cleaner exposure than individual greenfield foundry projects.
Equipment and advanced packaging: Lam, BESI and MaxLinear deliver new data quickly
■ Lam Research: Wednesday directly tests foundry, HBM and NAND capex. Orders and guidance matter more than the recent equity correction.
■ KLA / Applied Materials: Equipment stocks have corrected heavily without a corresponding collapse in fundamental order demand being reported inside this window.
■ Memory: Sustained memory investment supports deposition, etch, clean and process control.
■ BESI: Q3 results follow Thursday at 07:00 CET. Order intake, hybrid bonding, photonics and advanced packaging are the key variables.
■ ASML context: Known ASML hybrid-bonding ambitions remain mildly negative to BESI's potential long-term share but do not change today's picture.
■ MaxLinear: Q3 results follow Thursday after the US market close, with the call at 16:30 ET. Connectivity, broadband and its AI-infrastructure portfolio are the main read-throughs.
■ View: Equipment and connectivity get an immediate opportunity to prove operating demand remains much stronger than recent share-price action suggests.
Physical AI and industry: a second demand wave beyond hyperscale
■ Siemens: Siemens wants AI to raise factory automation toward 70%-80% over time.
■ Productivity: The company sees annual productivity improvements of 7%-9% as necessary to keep manufacturing competitive in high-wage economies.
■ NVIDIA / Germany: Cooperation around physical AI has now been formalised and broadens demand toward edge compute, robotics, machine vision and industrial networking.
■ Semiconductor content: These applications pull through sensors, analog, embedded, power, edge compute and real-time control.
■ Financing model: Industrial AI is much more often funded from normal corporate capex than through enormous neocloud leases.
■ View: Physical AI can become a second, much more distributed demand wave that depends less on a handful of hyperscalers.
Specialty optics: MKS sells Ophir to TTM Technologies
■ TTM Technologies / MKS: TTM is buying Ophir Optics from MKS for approximately $650 million in cash.
■ Ophir: The business focuses on infrared, thermal imaging and laser optics for defense, security and industrial applications.
■ TTM: The transaction extends TTM beyond PCBs and RF toward advanced optical systems.
■ MKS: The disposal simplifies the portfolio and increases financial flexibility around semiconductor and electronics/packaging.
■ Nuance: This is not an AI data-center optics transaction and should not be confused with AAOI, Lumentum or Coherent.
■ View: Capital allocation is the key implication for MKS. A leaner portfolio can create more room for its core semiconductor activities.
China and geopolitics: DeepSeek restrictions accelerate AI ecosystem separation
■ DeepSeek: US civilian agencies must remove DeepSeek products and services built on the model.
■ Security: US authorities cite data, intelligence and software-security risks.
■ China AI stack: The move increases incentives to develop models, accelerators, memory and networking more fully inside China.
■ Supply chains: Greater technology separation means duplicated R&D, fabs, packaging and data-center infrastructure.
■ View: Fragmentation reduces global supply-chain efficiency but can increase overall semiconductor investment.
SOX and market structure: oversold rebound, not yet a trend reversal
■ SOX: The index rebounded Monday after eight consecutive losses totalling roughly 15.7%.
■ Technical: The 9-day RSI was around 21.5 before the rebound and therefore deeply oversold.
■ Support: First important support sits around 11,110-11,056, followed by areas near 10,815 and 10,601.
■ Resistance: A more convincing technical improvement requires eventual recovery above the 50-day average near 12,064.
■ Korea: The KOSPI is down roughly 3.9% this morning, providing the clearest warning that the US rebound has not yet become a global trend change.
■ Japan: The Nikkei is down around 1.0%.
■ Europe: Euro Stoxx 50 futures are about 0.6% lower, DAX futures 0.3% and FTSE futures roughly 0.5%.
■ US: S&P 500 futures are only around 0.1% higher.
■ View: Risk-reward has improved from last week, but the cash market still needs to prove buying extends beyond short covering and initial dip buying.
Coming days
■ SpaceX: Results are due today, with markets expecting roughly $12.74 billion of quarterly revenue. AI infrastructure, connectivity and financing of future growth are the main read-throughs.
■ Meta: Wednesday becomes the key hyperscaler test for AI capex, monetisation and free cash flow.
■ Tesla: AI compute, autonomy and robotics remain relevant to automotive and edge semiconductors.
■ Lam Research: Wednesday brings the most important short-term equipment test through orders and guidance.
■ Texas Instruments: The key breadth test for analog, automotive and industrial demand outside data-center AI.
■ Micron: Thursday's announced strike is the most immediate memory supply event.
■ BESI: Thursday at 07:00 CET puts order intake, hybrid bonding, photonics and advanced packaging in focus.
■ MaxLinear: Q3 results follow Thursday after the US close, with connectivity, broadband and AI infrastructure as the relevant read-throughs.
■ Nscale: A second Anthropic agreement could become one of the largest future Vera Rubin deployments, but financing, construction and power remain critical.
■ CoreWeave: Bonds and credit spreads remain the cleanest daily indicators of neocloud stress.
Desk view
■ Market: Neutral to mildly negative. The US rebound was constructive, but South Korea, Japan and European futures still do not confirm a durable trend change.
■ Elice: This is the clearest new capital-markets signal. Even strong revenue growth and operating profitability do not protect AI infrastructure when markets sharply raise required returns on capital.
■ Compute: NVIDIA attacks x86 with Vera while Amazon attacks the CUDA software moat. Competition is shifting toward complete ecosystems.
■ Alternative chips: Tenstorrent confirms private capital remains available for RISC-V and alternative accelerators. The total market grows while the competitive field broadens.
■ Intel: CPU, advanced packaging and custom silicon can create value before a full Foundry turnaround.
■ Memory: Micron Taiwan is the immediate risk. Kioxia remains a distinct NAND cost-leadership case, while memory continues to absorb more of AI-system economics.
■ Optics and networking: Demand is physical and broad. Bottlenecks are moving toward bandwidth, lasers, optical engines, switching and packaging.
■ Test: Higher system complexity increases the economic value of yield control and required test insertions.
■ Servers: High revenue growth is not enough. Margins, working capital and cash conversion increasingly determine shareholder returns.
■ AI infrastructure: Nscale shows demand, CoreWeave the cost of financing and Elice the new discipline of equity markets.
■ Hyperscalers: Even strong balance sheets deserve closer scrutiny when leases, guarantees and project structures increase economic leverage.
■ Power: AI deployment is ultimately constrained by megawatts, transmission and cooling. Not every ordered accelerator can automatically be installed.
■ Equipment: Lam, BESI and then MaxLinear get an immediate opportunity to prove operating demand remains stronger than the equity correction suggests.
■ What markets may be mispricing: Exceptional physical demand for compute, memory, optics and equipment can coexist with poor equity economics at an individual data-center operator. Credit stress in one layer of the stack does not automatically mean semiconductor demand is breaking.
■ Conclusion: The semiconductor trade is moving from broad AI beta toward selection. The most attractive parts of the chain are those where physical capacity remains genuinely scarce, barriers to entry stay high and end customers have the financial strength to invest throughout the cycle. A new broad sector rally needs three confirmations: a SOX rebound that holds technically, normalising AI credit spreads and earnings demonstrating that extraordinary capex is generating adequate economic returns.
