SCE Trader

■ Sectorread-through: Nebius, Applied Digital en IREN werden vrijdag eveneens fors verkocht.

■ Meta — woensdag: De belangrijkste hyperscalertest.

NVIDIA pulls HBM toward TSMC, 2027 becomes the financing test and Schneider confirms power as the next AI bottleneck

© 2026 SCEtrader.nl - All rights reserved.

Monday, October 19, 2026
Research window: Friday, October 16 at 07:00 through Monday, October 19 at 06:09, Amsterdam time.

The AI and semiconductor chain starts the new week with a much sharper distinction between fundamental demand and financial executability. The SOX lost another 2.5% on Friday, its eighth consecutive declining session, but Nasdaq futures are roughly 1.0% higher on Monday morning and S&P 500 futures 0.7% higher. Asia has not confirmed that turn, with Japan, South Korea and Taiwan trading lower. Our direction is therefore neutral to cautiously positive, with a clear preference for companies combining technological scarcity with financially strong customers.

The most important weekend news is in memory. NVIDIA has reportedly asked Samsung, SK hynix and Micron to use the same TSMC base-die route for NVHBM, making HBM even more of an integrated logic-memory-packaging product. At the same time, Morgan Stanley shows how extreme capital requirements become in 2027, while Microsoft/Nscale demonstrates that funding alone is insufficient when grid connections are unavailable. Schneider, HBM, NAND and optics provide the opposite side of the picture, where physical order data remain exceptionally strong.

■ Market picture: Neutral to cautiously positive. US futures are recovering and the 10-year Treasury yield is easing toward 5.05%, but Asian technology remains weak and AI credit has not provided an all-clear.
■ NVIDIA / NVHBM: The main theme. NVIDIA has reportedly asked Samsung, SK hynix and Micron to use TSMC's process for NVHBM base dies and sixth-generation 1c DRAM for the core dies. This is much broader than a simple Samsung/TSMC partnership.
■ Financing: Morgan Stanley sees 2027 as the year in which the gap between operating cash flow and AI investment becomes widest. The strongest hyperscalers can absorb this; weaker credits and neoclouds face a much more difficult financing equation.
■ Schneider / power: Schneider reported record revenue, triple-digit data-center demand and another guidance increase. Microsoft/Nscale simultaneously demonstrates why power, grids and timing are becoming increasingly important bottlenecks.
■ Memory: CXMT could reach roughly 420,000 DRAM wafers per month in 2027 and 500,000-600,000 in 2028. At the same time, the physical market remains tight and UBS sees Kioxia retaining structurally strong NAND margins through the shortage.
■ Optics: The expert channel work supplied to us points to a very large 800G ramp at Applied Optoelectronics and a rapid transition toward 1.6T, giving optical connectivity a much more tangible volume thesis.
■ ASML / BESI: Friday's equity reaction is current, but the underlying ASML hybrid-bonding story is not. Greater competition is mildly negative for BESI over the long term; Thursday's bookings matter much more.

NVIDIA standardises NVHBM across Samsung, SK hynix and Micron

■ NVHBM: The weekend report is broader than first understood. NVIDIA has reportedly asked Samsung Electronics, SK hynix and Micron to manufacture the NVHBM base die through TSMC and use sixth-generation 1c DRAM for the memory dies.
■ Base die: TSMC's 3nm process is specified for the base die. NVIDIA is therefore pulling a critical logic component of HBM toward one leading-edge foundry route instead of relying on three completely different supplier implementations.
■ Memory controller: NVHBM integrates NVIDIA's proprietary memory controller inside the base die. NVIDIA is attempting to standardise deployment across multiple memory vendors and tie the memory architecture more tightly to its own accelerator platform.
■ Samsung: Samsung reportedly accepted NVIDIA's requirements after an internal review. It intends to retain its own integrated manufacturing model for standard HBM and custom products for customers other than NVIDIA.
■ Capacity: Samsung is simultaneously assessing whether its own foundry could produce NVHBM base dies if demand exceeds TSMC capacity. TSMC becomes the preferred route, but Samsung is preserving a second potential manufacturing path.
■ TSMC: This adds yet more AI content for TSMC. It already manufactures leading accelerators and custom silicon and could now capture the logic layer beneath HBM stacks from multiple memory vendors.
■ SK hynix / Micron: The competitive architecture changes for both companies. Their proprietary DRAM remains a differentiation point, but a standardised NVIDIA/TSMC base die leaves less room for completely proprietary logic.
■ Strategic conclusion: HBM is becoming less of a standalone memory product. DRAM process, logic, memory controller, power delivery, thermals, stacking and packaging are increasingly co-designed.

HBM and BESI: complexity rises, but hybrid bonding remains a timing question

■ BESI: Increasing NVHBM complexity is structurally supportive for advanced packaging, but does not imply immediate large-volume hybrid-bonding adoption.
■ ASML: BESI fell around 3% Friday following analysis of ASML patents related to hybrid bonding. The market reaction is fresh; ASML's interest in 3D integration and advanced packaging is not.
■ Competition: A serious ASML tool would be mildly negative for BESI because the potential market becomes less concentrated. Patents and engineering, however, do not equal a qualified high-volume die-to-wafer bonder.
■ HBM roadmap: The more important issue for BESI remains when HBM actually transitions from current bonding approaches toward hybrid bonding at scale.
■ NVHBM read-through: NVIDIA's standardisation could eventually increase the need for extremely precise integration as base dies, 1c DRAM and more complex stacks move closer together.
■ Thursday: October 22 therefore matters. Order intake, actual hybrid-bonding orders, photonics and advanced packaging are the datapoints the market now needs.

CoreWeave: Friday made the credit case worse again

■ CoreWeave (CRWV): Shares lost roughly 12% Friday and almost 25% over five sessions. The earlier bounce following Jensen Huang's reassurance barely held.
■ Credit: Bond yields moved above 15% during the week and certain issues briefly exceeded 16%, while CDS moved above 1,000 basis points.
■ NVIDIA: NVIDIA is CoreWeave's second-largest investor and a critical commercial partner. Huang's assessment that CoreWeave is financially strengthening matters, but is not independent of NVIDIA's own economic interest.
■ CEO sales: Friday filings showed CEO Michael Intrator and affiliated entities have sold nearly $1 billion of stock since the IPO. Most sales were conducted under prearranged plans and are therefore not equivalent to a spontaneous insider exit following recent credit stress.
■ Demand versus financing: CoreWeave does not have a demand problem. The issue is how much debt, equity and lease financing is required to turn contracted AI compute into built infrastructure and ultimately free cash flow.
■ Sector read-through: Nebius, Applied Digital and IREN were also sold heavily Friday. Markets are repricing the whole leveraged neocloud model rather than one company alone.

Morgan Stanley: 2027 becomes the real financing year

■ Total AI investment: Morgan Stanley's research, which circulated widely again over the weekend, estimates roughly $1.58 trillion of lease-adjusted AI investment in 2027, consisting of approximately $1.39 trillion of cash capex and $195 billion of lease investment.
■ Comparison: The same framework puts 2026 investment at roughly $978 billion and 2028 at about $1.81 trillion. Investment therefore does not peak in 2027; financial strain does.
■ Semiconductors and servers: Roughly $672 billion, or 42% of the 2027 total, is expected to flow into semiconductors and servers. Networking and optical communications receive around $215 billion and data-center infrastructure around $119 billion.
■ Cash burn: Morgan Stanley expects the gap between operating cash flow and investment to be widest in 2027. A weekend summary of the research puts lease-adjusted cash burn at just under $600 billion.
■ High-grade hyperscalers: In the stress test, the stronger group begins around 30.7x interest coverage. Even after $400 billion of additional debt at 7%, coverage falls to a still-manageable roughly 11.9x.
■ Weaker credits: In the supplied analysis, the weaker group including Oracle and SpaceX begins around 4.0x. An additional $120 billion of debt at 8.5% would push combined coverage to approximately 1.8x.
■ Critical distinction: Markets must stop treating “hyperscaler” and “AI infrastructure” as one credit category. The same technology opportunity can be highly attractive on an AA/AAA balance sheet and financially unsustainable for a leveraged operator.
■ Power: Morgan Stanley also sees a cumulative US data-center power deficit of roughly 32 GW through 2028 against approximately 97 GW of demand.
■ Optics: The bank estimates each additional dollar of cloud capex creates roughly $0.15 of networking and optical revenue.
■ Investment View: This is the central point of the correction: hardware demand does not need to collapse for individual equity and credit cases to break. Financing quality now belongs alongside technology quality as a core selection criterion.

Microsoft / Nscale: ordered GPUs are useless without megawatts

■ Microsoft / Nscale: Microsoft withdrew this weekend from an Nscale data-center project in Loughton, UK.
■ Grid: Nscale had reportedly been told a standard grid connection might not become available until the 2030s. Microsoft did not itself disclose a formal reason for withdrawing.
■ Nscale: The NVIDIA-backed company says its broader relationship with Microsoft remains intact and is evaluating alternative power sources for the site.
■ Physical bottleneck: The episode makes the AI buildout sequence visible: contracts, financing and GPU orders are insufficient if transmission, substations, cooling and generation do not arrive on time.
■ Broader warning: Fresh weekend analysis of the US AI buildout points to dozens of major data-center projects encountering delays or other setbacks this year. Power and permitting are no longer theoretical constraints.
■ Neocloud risk: Delays are particularly painful for debt- and lease-funded operators because financing costs can accrue before compute capacity is generating revenue.

Schneider Electric: that makes the numbers even more important

■ Schneider Electric (SU): Schneider reported record Q3 revenue of €11.46 billion on Friday versus approximately €11.13 billion expected. Organic revenue grew 16.9%.
■ Data centers: Data-center demand grew at a triple-digit rate. For the AI chain, this matters more than the headline revenue beat because it shows hyperscaler and colocation capex translating into actual power and cooling orders.
■ Guidance: Expected 2026 organic revenue growth was increased to 12%-14%. The target for organic adjusted EBITA growth rose to 18%-21%.
■ Backlog: Backlog reached another record, providing management with improved visibility into 2027 and 2028.
■ Power thesis: The Nscale episode is not negative for Schneider's structural thesis. It reinforces the scarcity value of power distribution, grid connectivity, UPS, cooling and energy automation.
■ But: Project delays can still change revenue timing. Investors therefore need to distinguish structural demand from the exact commissioning date of individual data centers.
■ Client view: Fundamentally, the numbers are very strong and Schneider remains one of the better European ways to gain AI-infrastructure exposure. The stock remains technically difficult.
■ Technical: We first want the VWAP to hold. If support holds, the stock can return relatively quickly toward its all-time high. If VWAP breaks convincingly, we will not chase the shares despite the strong results.

CXMT: from technology story to tangible capacity threat

■ CXMT: The debate now needs to move beyond 4F² architecture alone. The Chinese producer has sufficient scale ambition to begin influencing the conventional DRAM supply-demand balance from 2027 onward.
■ 2027: TrendForce and Counterpoint estimates point toward roughly 420,000 DRAM wafers per month versus around 320,000 currently.
■ 2028: Industry estimates highlighted again over the weekend point to approximately 500,000-600,000 wafers per month by late 2028.
■ Scale: At the high end this is close to a doubling of current capacity. CXMT becomes far too large to treat as a niche supplier.
■ Product mix: The immediate threat remains greater in DDR5, LPDDR5 and other conventional DRAM than in the most advanced HBM.
■ Yield still matters: Wafer starts are not bit output. The economic threat depends on process node, density, yields, reliability and major-customer qualification.
■ Nuance: Equity markets are therefore not discounting an imaginary threat. A large amount of Chinese capacity is genuinely coming. The market may only be early on when that capacity materially affects Samsung, SK hynix and Micron profitability.

Kioxia: NAND deserves separate analysis from DRAM

■ Kioxia: NAND should no longer be buried inside a generic memory section. Its supply, pricing and cost dynamics increasingly differ from DRAM and HBM.
■ UBS view: In the UBS research supplied to us, the bank expects Kioxia to maintain industry-leading NAND margins through 2026 and 2027 due to structurally lower manufacturing cost per GB.
■ Cost advantage: UBS has previously highlighted Kioxia's lower wafer and bit costs versus key peers. That advantage flows directly into margins when NAND contract pricing rises.
■ Supply: The broker expects NAND conditions to remain tight through 2027, with sequential pricing increases peaking only toward late 2027.
■ AI storage: AI does not only drive HBM. Training, inference, vector databases, checkpoints and expanding datasets also increase demand for enterprise SSDs and high-capacity NAND.
■ Risk: NAND remains more cyclical than HBM. Once new bit output grows faster than enterprise-storage demand, pricing can turn much more rapidly.
■ Investment View: Kioxia is therefore worth following separately: not the same technology moat as HBM, but a combination of cost leadership and tight physical supply that could sustain margins longer than earlier consensus assumptions.

UBS and memory capex: the direction is compelling, one number needs caution

■ UBS research: Broker information supplied to us raises memory's share of top-12 hyperscaler capex in 2027 from 63% to 66%. The direction matters: memory is absorbing an increasingly large portion of total AI system economics.
■ $961 billion: Secondary distribution attaches a figure of roughly $961 billion. We are not treating that dollar amount as independently confirmed because publicly available UBS research has also used $961 billion for global memory revenue in 2026.
■ What is clear: The qualitative conclusion remains intact. HBM, server DRAM, NAND and memory controllers are increasing in economic value faster than in previous compute cycles.
■ For investors: Understanding the mix shift correctly matters more than inserting a potentially mislabelled broker figure into a model.

Applied Optoelectronics: optics finally gets hard volume numbers

■ Applied Optoelectronics (AAOI): The expert channel check supplied to us points to a significantly stronger 800G ramp than markets considered plausible a year ago.
■ 800G: The channel estimate moves from roughly 600,000-700,000 shipments in 2026 toward approximately 5 million in 2027 and around 7 million in 2028.
■ AWS / Oracle: AWS remains the principal customer in this expert work, while Oracle becomes an increasingly important second source of demand.
■ Taiwan: Taiwan capacity could reach approximately 200,000-240,000 units per month by year-end.
■ Ningbo: The Chinese site is expected to build toward roughly 100,000 units per month of AWS-facing capacity next year alongside further US expansion.
■ 1.6T: The expert check sees approximately 100,000 1.6T units per month of demand in 2027, up from only several tens of thousands this year.
■ Oracle: Early 1.6T demand is primarily tied to Oracle FRO and LRO projects. Potential AWS programmes may follow but are not yet confirmed in the supplied channel work.
■ Official cross-check: AAOI has itself previously disclosed a production-capacity roadmap above 650,000 combined 800G/1.6T units per month by end-2026 and above 930,000 per month by end-2027. The expert shipment figures are not company guidance, but they fit within the announced capacity expansion.
■ Core point: Unlike many abstract AI narratives, optics now has concrete volume curves demonstrating how rapidly physical interconnect demand needs to grow.
■ Risk: Customer concentration remains high and optical markets are vulnerable to rapid capacity additions. A five-million-unit market only produces exceptional economics if ASPs and yields remain supportive.

Networking and optics: Morgan Stanley confirms the economic leverage

■ Capex transmission: Morgan Stanley estimates every additional dollar of cloud capex creates roughly $0.15 of networking and optical revenue.
■ 2027: Within the bank's 2027 AI-investment framework, roughly $215 billion goes to networking and optical communications.
■ 1.6T / 3.2T: The major opportunity is the transition from 800G to 1.6T and eventually 3.2T, although the same capacity ramp creates a future risk of temporary oversupply.
■ CPO: Silicon photonics and co-packaged optics may eventually alter the number and economics of traditional pluggable transceivers. The overall market grows, but winners inside optics may change.
■ Investment View: AAOI's channel volume data make the demand case convincing. The next analytical question is which suppliers retain the best yields, laser availability and customer qualifications as 1.6T becomes a volume market.

Equipment: equity capitulation before Lam tests the order cycle

■ Lam Research / KLA / Applied Materials: Equipment entered the weekend after an exceptionally weak run. Lam and KLA had reached roughly ten consecutive down sessions; Applied Materials nine.
■ Drawdown: Lam and Applied Materials lost around 20% or more over the streak, while KLA lost in the high teens, even though structural foundry and memory capex have not yet demonstrably collapsed.
■ Interpretation: So far this looks more like multiple compression and a crowded-position unwind than a sudden order recession.
■ Lam Wednesday: That makes Lam's results particularly important. Orders and guidance can show whether equities have fallen faster than fundamentals.
■ Memory link: The Samsung/TSMC/NVHBM architecture, CXMT capacity expansion and high HBM/NAND investment can support wafer-fab-equipment demand from several directions simultaneously.

Asia and China: better macro data fail to stop AI de-risking

■ China: Q3 GDP grew 4.5%, slightly ahead of expectations and above Q2's 4.3%. Industrial production increased 5.5%.
■ Consumption: Retail sales increased only 1.1%, while property and investment remained weak. The recovery therefore remains heavily reliant on exports and industrial activity.
■ Semiconductor read-through: High-tech manufacturing remains one of the stronger parts of China's economy, constructive for mature-node and industrial demand but less relevant to the valuation of US AI assets.
■ Monday morning: Japan is down roughly 1.2%, South Korea 0.4% and Taiwan 1.4%. US futures are moving in the opposite direction.
■ Conclusion: Asia shows that deleveraging is not fully complete. US futures simultaneously suggest a technical rebound is set up after eight weak SOX sessions.

This week: from narratives back to hard numbers

■ Meta — Wednesday: The key hyperscaler test. Capex, free cash flow and AI monetisation need to demonstrate that investment growth remains economically defensible.
■ Tesla — Wednesday: AI, autonomy and compute investment remain relevant to semiconductor demand alongside automotive.
■ Lam Research — Wednesday: A direct check on the equipment cycle, memory capex and leading-edge foundry demand.
■ Texas Instruments — Wednesday: A much cleaner read on automotive, industrial and analog markets and therefore on the breadth of the semiconductor cycle beyond AI.
■ BESI — Thursday: Order intake, hybrid bonding, photonics and advanced packaging are the key European datapoints for us.
■ CoreWeave: No earnings report is required to monitor this theme. Bonds and CDS provide a daily signal on whether credit conditions are deteriorating further or beginning to normalise.

Desk view

■ Market: Neutral to cautiously positive. Following Friday's heavy selloff, Nasdaq futures around +1%, lower sovereign yields and lower oil create room for recovery, but Asia and credit have not confirmed a bottom.
■ NVHBM: This is the most important fresh semiconductor development. NVIDIA is attempting to standardise the base die and memory controller across Samsung, SK hynix and Micron through TSMC. HBM increasingly becomes a platform architecture rather than a commodity.
■ TSMC: TSMC again emerges as one of the clearest winners. Even while Samsung, SK hynix and Micron compete in HBM, TSMC can monetise the common base-die layer.
■ BESI: Greater HBM complexity remains supportive for advanced packaging, but hybrid-bonding volumes still need to be proven. ASML represents a mild competitive negative, but not a new one.
■ Financing: Morgan Stanley explains why CoreWeave should not simply be extrapolated across the whole AI chain. AA/AAA hyperscalers still have substantial financing capacity; weaker credits may hit real constraints in 2027.
■ Power: Microsoft/Nscale demonstrates that even financially strong customers cannot bypass physical electricity constraints. Schneider therefore sits directly on one of the most important bottlenecks of the next several years.
■ Memory: CXMT is a genuine future supply threat, particularly to conventional DRAM, but the impact lies mainly in 2027-2028 and still requires competitive yields and qualification. NAND deserves separate attention: UBS sees Kioxia as a structural margin winner while supply remains tight.
■ Optics: The supplied AAOI data are exceptionally strong. Moving from 600,000-700,000 800G units to several million annually is exactly the volume transition required to support the optical-connectivity bull case.
■ What we are not blindly accepting: We do not treat the circulating UBS figure of roughly $961 billion of 2027 memory capex as hard-confirmed without the primary note. Rising memory intensity is convincing; the exact dollar value needs to be right before entering a professional model.
■ Conclusion: The AI correction is making the sector more attractive because markets are finally distinguishing technology, financing and execution. We prefer TSMC and the strongest parts of memory, equipment, power and optical connectivity over highly leveraged neoclouds. A durable new rally requires three confirmations this week: improving SOX price action, normalising AI credit and earnings demonstrating that enormous capex is generating sufficient economic returns.
