Dagelijkse chips briefing: SOX - TSMC - CRWV - DELL - ByteDance EN MEER
De verkoopgolf in halfgeleiders is woensdag opnieuw fors versneld.
Marvell: zware koersval zonder nieuwe fundamentele schok
■ Broadcom (AVGO): Broadcom verloor woensdag ongeveer 3%.
■ NVIDIA (NVDA): NVIDIA verloor woensdag ruim 3%.
■ AMD (AMD): AMD verloor 5,7%.
■ CoreWeave (CRWV): CoreWeave verloor ongeveer 16%.
Optische technologie: structurele vraag blijft, financiële lat gaat omhoog
■ Micron Technology (MU): Micron verloor woensdag opnieuw ruim 4%.
■ DRAM-markt: De huidige situatie blijft bovendien krap.
■ Kioxia (285A.T): Kioxia daalde opnieuw hard in Japan.
■ BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI.AS): Binnen het onderzoeksvenster is geen nieuwe materiële order of productaankondiging gevonden.
■ ON Semiconductor (ON): ON Semiconductor verloor woensdag ongeveer 4,3%.
■ BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI.AS): De resultaten volgen op donderdag 22 oktober.
Semiconductor sector slides again: inflation and financing stress dominate, TSMC becomes the crucial test
© 2026 SCEtrader.nl - All rights reserved.
Thursday, October 15, 2026
Research window: October 14, 05:31 to October 15, 05:31, Amsterdam time.
The semiconductor selloff accelerated sharply again on Wednesday. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell 4.3%, its sixth consecutive decline, while the Nasdaq lost 1.88% and the S&P 500 declined 1.11%. The direct catalyst was US inflation: consumer prices increased 0.6% month on month and 3.7% year on year in September, while core inflation came in at 0.3% month on month and 2.6% year on year. This increased expectations for further US rate increases. The capital-intensive AI supply chain was hit particularly hard. NVIDIA lost more than 3%, AMD 5.7%, Marvell approximately 8.7%, Micron more than 4% and CoreWeave around 16%. Selling spread back into Asia on Thursday morning.
The central development over the past 24 hours is therefore no longer ASML's Wednesday pre-market earnings, which have now been digested by the market, but the rapidly rising cost of capital across the AI supply chain. The yield on CoreWeave's 2032 bond approached 15%, while Dell and HPE plunged following Barclays downgrades. Against this, strategic semiconductor investment continues: Japan is financing up to $21 billion for as many as two new GlobalFoundries fabs in New York, ByteDance is reportedly nearing a data-center chip agreement with MediaTek and SK hynix is attempting to link US export licences for its Chinese NAND fab to a potential new US manufacturing facility. Fundamental attention now shifts to TSMC.
■ Market picture: Negative. The SOX fell 4.3% and has declined for six consecutive sessions. Markets are pricing not only technological risks but also more expensive financing and a higher discount rate for future AI earnings.
■ AI infrastructure: Negative for heavily financed players. CoreWeave shows how rapidly higher bond yields can erode the economics of new data-center capacity.
■ AI processors: Negative for valuations, but not equivalent to collapsing demand. NVIDIA, AMD, Broadcom and Marvell were sold off without a comparable deterioration in operating demand being identified within the research window.
■ Memory: Negative and highly volatile. Chinese competition remains a structural risk to DRAM and NAND, while the immediate commercial impact of the newest technology has yet to be fully demonstrated.
■ Coming days: TSMC is today's most important operational test. Gross margin, 2nm, CoWoS, capex and the 2027 outlook will be decisive.
Marvell: sharp decline without a new fundamental shock
■ Marvell (MRVL): Marvell fell approximately 8.7% on Wednesday, making it one of the largest decliners among major US semiconductor companies. No new company-specific order warning, revenue reduction or technological setback was identified within the research window that would explain the magnitude of the decline. The move fits the broader flight from businesses heavily exposed to AI infrastructure construction. Marvell supplies custom silicon, networking chips and electrical and optical connectivity technology. Structural demand can therefore remain strong even while the valuation falls as investors demand a higher risk premium for the same future cash flow.
Broadcom: strong hyperscaler exposure provides protection, not immunity
■ Broadcom (AVGO): Broadcom fell approximately 3%. The company has a relatively strong position because much of its AI exposure is tied to large hyperscalers with strong balance sheets and substantial existing cash flows. This makes Broadcom less vulnerable to financing stress than suppliers heavily dependent on smaller data-center operators. Nevertheless, Broadcom still depends on the pace at which customers build additional infrastructure. If capital costs continue rising, markets can assign lower valuations even to high-quality and profitable growth.
NVIDIA: financial conditions drive the share-price pressure
■ NVIDIA (NVDA): NVIDIA lost more than 3% on Wednesday. The decline followed hotter inflation and rising rate expectations rather than a new warning that customers were broadly cutting GPU purchases. This distinction is important. The largest cloud providers are among the financially strongest companies in the world and fund much of their AI investment through existing cash flows. Risk rises more sharply in the next layer of data-center customers that require significant debt to finance additional capacity.
AMD: the challenger is more sensitive to a higher risk premium
■ AMD (AMD): AMD lost 5.7%. Instinct and EPYC provide tangible growth opportunities in AI and data centers, but AMD still needs to gain market share from NVIDIA. Its valuation is therefore more sensitive to doubts about how rapidly the overall AI market will continue expanding. If new data-center projects are delayed, competition for every incremental accelerator becomes more intense. The current decline primarily reflects a reduced willingness to pay for future growth rather than a fresh operating warning from AMD.
MediaTek and ByteDance: potential new Chinese data-center chip deal
■ MediaTek (2454.TW) / ByteDance: One of the freshest developments within the research window is a Bloomberg report that ByteDance is close to an agreement to acquire MediaTek semiconductors for data-center operations. Reuters has not independently verified the report. If completed, the deal would be strategically important because it would move MediaTek further beyond mobile processors and into higher-value data-center applications. For ByteDance, a broader supplier base could reduce dependence on foreign AI-chip platforms. With no final agreement, volumes or financial terms confirmed, we treat this strictly as a reported negotiation rather than realised revenue.
AI servers: Dell and HPE suffer a double hit
■ Dell Technologies (DELL) / HPE: Dell lost approximately 11.4% and HPE 8.2%. The direct company-specific catalyst was Barclays downgrading both shares from Overweight to Equal Weight. The bank sees insufficient evidence of a major new enterprise-AI acceleration and warned that elevated memory prices are supporting part of current revenue growth. If component prices normalise, reported sales growth could slow. Hotter inflation then intensified the selloff. This matters to the semiconductor chain because server manufacturers ultimately combine processors, memory, networking, storage and cooling into a single investment project.
AI infrastructure: CoreWeave exposes the weak point
■ CoreWeave (CRWV): CoreWeave lost approximately 16%. The yield on an unsecured 2032 bond rose toward 15%, versus 9.625% when issued in June. Market data indicate CoreWeave has approximately $22 billion of bonds and $26 billion of loans outstanding. The company also needs to invest enormous sums before new data-center capacity generates full revenue. The required return on new projects therefore rises rapidly when financing costs increase.
■ AI financing: The gap between hyperscalers and the second tier of AI infrastructure companies is widening. Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon and Meta can fund much of their investment through operating cash flow. Companies dependent on bonds, private credit and new equity experience higher rates much more quickly. For semiconductor suppliers, end demand is therefore increasingly determined not only by technological need but also by the quality of customers' balance sheets.
Optical technology: structural demand remains, the financial hurdle rises
■ Optical connectivity: The need to move ever-larger quantities of data between accelerators, racks and data centers does not disappear because of one poor trading session. The selloff does, however, raise the financial hurdle. Optical suppliers requiring heavy capital expenditure to expand production must show that order growth eventually translates into sufficient free cash flow. The same structural market growth can therefore produce very different shareholder returns depending on margins and capital intensity.
TSMC: focus shifts to profitability and capex
■ TSMC (2330.TW): TSMC reports its full third-quarter results today. Quarterly revenue has already been announced at a record approximately NT$1.49 trillion, roughly 50% higher than a year earlier. Analysts expect net profit of approximately NT$746.3 billion, which would represent a sixth consecutive record quarter. The earnings call begins at 0600 GMT, or 08:00 Amsterdam time.
■ TSMC (2330.TW): The key question is no longer whether AI demand is strong, but how much return TSMC earns from it. Investors will focus on gross margin, the 2nm ramp, the next A16 generation, availability of CoWoS packaging and capital expenditure. TSMC previously raised its 2026 capex budget to $60 billion–$64 billion. High capex is positive when capacity remains scarce and margins stay high, but becomes a risk if demand later normalises faster than expected.
■ TSMC (2330.TW): The shares were about 2% lower on Thursday morning while Taiwan's broader market fell roughly 3%. This changes the earnings setup: strong numbers can provide fundamental support, but weak guidance could be punished especially severely in the current environment.
GlobalFoundries: governments assume a large share of capital risk
■ GlobalFoundries (GFS): Japan will invest approximately $21 billion in as many as two new semiconductor fabs in Malta, New York, operated by GlobalFoundries. The first factory is expected to begin production in 2029 and add approximately 900,000 300mm wafers of annual US capacity. A decision on a second facility is expected by the end of 2028.
■ GlobalFoundries (GFS): The structure is particularly attractive because Japan provides all of the investment capital while US and Japanese interests jointly own the facilities and GlobalFoundries operates them. Apple and Renesas are cited as initial customers. GlobalFoundries can therefore expand capacity materially without placing the full construction cost on its own balance sheet. In a market dominated by concerns over financing costs, this is strategically powerful.
■ Tokyo Electron (8035.T): Part of the Japanese funding is likely to flow back toward equipment suppliers. GlobalFoundries has explicitly said it intends to engage strongly with Japanese equipment manufacturers, creating a potential multiyear source of demand for Tokyo Electron and peers.
Samsung and SK hynix: renewed South Korean selloff
■ Samsung Electronics (005930.KS): Samsung came under heavy pressure again on Thursday morning. The move combines two separate concerns: rising global interest rates and potential future Chinese competition in conventional DRAM. It should not automatically be interpreted as deterioration in current HBM demand. Samsung remains a combination of a cyclical standard-memory producer, an HBM supplier and a foundry business.
■ SK hynix (000660.KS): SK hynix was also hit hard while South Korea's KOSPI declined sharply. Its strong HBM position makes the shares particularly sensitive to expectations for the AI capital-spending cycle. HBM remains significantly more difficult to manufacture than conventional DRAM, making Chinese competition less immediate in that market.
SK hynix and the US: China licence linked to potential American NAND fab
■ SK hynix (000660.KS) / Solidigm: A major new geopolitical development is that SK hynix is reportedly seeking US permission to export additional American semiconductor equipment to its NAND facility in Dalian. In return, subsidiary Solidigm would potentially build a new NAND fab in the United States.
■ SK hynix / Lam Research / Applied Materials / KLA: The Chinese facility uses equipment from Lam Research, Applied Materials and KLA. Additional Dalian production would therefore also matter to US equipment suppliers. At the same time, the negotiation illustrates how industrial policy, export controls and fab investment are becoming directly linked. No final agreement has been reached and the precise US fab location remains undecided.
DRAM: Micron remains weak, but markets are front-running CXMT
■ Micron Technology (MU): Micron lost more than 4% again on Wednesday. Investors fear China's CXMT could eventually bring more DDR5 server memory to market through its denser 4F² architecture. The logic is straightforward: additional capacity can pressure exceptionally high prices and margins.
■ CXMT: The weakness in the bearish thesis is that independent yields, reliability and commercial volumes for the newest architecture have not yet been convincingly demonstrated. A technological design is not yet a scalable fab. Micron's share-price decline therefore already discounts future competitive pressure that still needs to be proven operationally.
■ DRAM market: Current conditions remain tight. Short-term and long-term fundamentals can therefore point in opposite directions: present margins may remain exceptionally high while investors already discount a less favourable market several years ahead.
NAND: Kioxia under pressure, but SK hynix geopolitics matter more
■ Kioxia (285A.T): Kioxia again fell sharply in Japan. No separate new operational disappointment was identified within the research window that explains the magnitude of the move. The shares primarily reflect higher rates, sector-wide risk aversion and expectations for future Chinese NAND capacity.
■ NAND market: The new SK hynix negotiations surrounding Dalian are more important to industry fundamentals. Additional US equipment approvals could allow Chinese capacity to increase faster, while a new Solidigm fab in the United States could diversify global NAND supply. Future supply therefore cannot be reduced to a simple China-versus-West framework.
Semiconductor equipment: ASML is context now, not the headline
■ ASML (ASML): ASML's strong quarterly figures were published before European markets opened on Wednesday and were processed during the full trading session. They are therefore primarily context for today's briefing. The key takeaway remains that ASML is not seeing evidence of a sudden collapse in demand for advanced manufacturing equipment and customers continue to plan far ahead.
■ Applied Materials (AMAT) / Lam Research (LRCX) / KLA (KLAC): The new SK hynix discussions create another angle for US equipment suppliers. Additional licences for Dalian could support future shipments, while tighter export controls remain a risk. The new GlobalFoundries programme can meanwhile create a multiyear source of US equipment demand.
■ Tokyo Electron (8035.T): The Japanese equipment maker could become a direct beneficiary of the GlobalFoundries programme because Japan is providing the capital and GlobalFoundries has stated that Japanese tool suppliers will receive significant consideration.
BESI: no new evidence yet of faster hybrid-bonding orders
■ BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI.AS): No new material order or product announcement was identified within the research window. This matters because investors are waiting for proof that structural growth in HBM and advanced packaging is translating more rapidly into BESI equipment orders. The October 22 results therefore become more important. ASML's strong demand picture is positive for the overall capital-spending cycle, but cannot automatically be translated into hybrid-bonding demand.
Test and inspection: no new major contract, structural demand intact
■ Test and inspection: No new major order from Advantest, Teradyne or FormFactor was identified over the past 24 hours. Fundamentally, the outlook remains constructive because HBM, chiplets, advanced packaging and silicon photonics require more and increasingly complex test steps. In the current market, however, investors will increasingly distinguish between an attractive future testing opportunity and actual booked orders.
Power and analog chips: broad selling, limited fresh company news
■ ON Semiconductor (ON): ON Semiconductor lost approximately 4.3% on Wednesday. No new company-specific event within the research window explains the move, making the decline primarily part of the broader semiconductor and rate-sensitive growth selloff. The company also remains heavily exposed to automotive and industrial markets, giving it a significantly different cycle from AI accelerator suppliers.
China and geopolitics: export controls increasingly become negotiating tools
■ Chinese semiconductor industry: The debate is shifting from simple export bans toward more complex negotiations over where manufacturing capacity is built and which tools can be shipped into China. The new SK hynix negotiation is a clear example. ASML also warned on Wednesday that tighter restrictions could accelerate China's development of domestic alternatives.
■ China risk: The speed at which Chinese suppliers can replace foreign technology differs greatly by category. The threat is closer in conventional memory than in HBM, advanced AI accelerators or EUV lithography. A general conclusion that 'China is a threat' is therefore too simplistic; the impact must be assessed separately across the semiconductor chain.
Upcoming results and important dates
■ TSMC (2330.TW): Full third-quarter results and new guidance are due today at 08:00 Amsterdam time. Gross margin, 2nm, CoWoS, capex and 2027 are the principal points to watch.
■ BE Semiconductor Industries (BESI.AS): Results follow on Thursday, October 22. Order intake and progress in hybrid bonding will be central.
■ ASE Technology Holding (ASX): Final quarterly results follow on October 29. The focus is how much strong revenue growth translates into margins and cash flow.
■ US interest rates: With CPI at 3.7% and core inflation at 2.6%, every new macro release remains relevant to technology. Higher financing costs will hit the weakest AI projects first.
■ ByteDance / MediaTek: A definitive agreement could give MediaTek a significantly larger role in data-center silicon. Until formally confirmed, the potential deal remains an important development to monitor.
Desk view
■ Positive: Underlying demand for advanced semiconductors has not collapsed. TSMC is approaching another potential record quarter, hyperscalers continue investing and GlobalFoundries is gaining access to up to $21 billion of externally financed capacity. MediaTek could also gain a new data-center application through ByteDance. Strategic semiconductor investment continues.
■ Negative: The cost of capital is now the largest new risk. CoreWeave's roughly 15% bond yield demonstrates how quickly AI projects requiring substantial debt can become less attractive. The SOX has declined for six sessions and even fundamentally strong semiconductor stocks are being sold. This pressure can persist while bond markets remain unsettled.
■ Mixed: Memory is fundamentally strong in the short term but riskier over longer horizons. Current shortages support pricing, while CXMT and other Chinese producers could eventually pressure margins. The new SK hynix negotiations also show that geopolitics may alter both Chinese and US supply.
■ What could change the picture: TSMC needs to confirm today that record revenue is accompanied by strong margins and a credible demand outlook. Bond markets are equally important. If AI credit spreads stabilise while TSMC reports strongly, investors may begin separating financially healthy winners from weaker leveraged businesses. If financing stress intensifies, even strong semiconductor demand may remain secondary to valuation pressure in the near term.
■ Conclusion: The short-term direction is clearly negative, but the underlying semiconductor cycle is less weak than share prices suggest. The mistake would be either to buy the entire sector indiscriminately because prices have fallen or to conclude that AI investment is structurally collapsing. The market is shifting toward selection. Companies with proven demand, scarce technology, strong customers and healthy financing are in a materially stronger position than businesses dependent on expensive external capital. That distinction is likely to matter more over the coming weeks than the direction of the semiconductor sector as a whole.
