â–  Fallen angels: Wij blijven zoeken naar aandelen waar beleggers even doorheen moeten kijken.

English

â–  Market view: Europe looks set for another mixed start. The Euro Stoxx future is almost unchanged and there is little direction in pre-market trading. Wall Street was mixed yesterday and Asia is not giving a clear signal either. Still, it is notable that the market continues to react calmly to large AI financing plans, higher rates and uncertainty around oil. That suggests investors still want to finance the broader investment cycle and continue to absorb weak moments. We still see this as a buy-on-dips market, but August and September can remain choppy.
â–  Wall Street and futures: America was mixed yesterday and the broad market again stayed within a trading range. The S&P 500 future is slightly higher this morning and the Nasdaq 100 future is also a little better, but there is still no convincing breakout. The market is therefore not weak, but also not strong enough to chase blindly. Staying calm remains important.
â–  SPX options: The VIX rose almost 4% yesterday to around 15.5, but remains well below 20. That means some extra protection is being bought, but the market is not pricing in real stress. At these levels, we also look at short-dated, far out-of-the-money call structures on the S&P 500 ourselves. As an example, using fictional after-hours prices, a call on the S&P 500 with a 3-day maturity and a 7,925 strike could cost around 50 to 100 dollars, while the index would need to rise more than 2%. A comparable call with a 5-day maturity and a 7,925 strike could cost around 257 dollars, while that also requires a move of about 2.3%. The probability of success is small, but if the S&P 500 suddenly jumps 3%, such an option can move toward 5,000 dollars. In exceptional moves, the profit can be even much larger, but everything has to go right. That is why we look at this, preferably after another spike in the VIX, but can also deliberately decide to do nothing. This is purely a hit-and-run strategy, not a calm buy-and-hold position.
â–  Mandelbrot: This fits the idea of Benoit Mandelbrot, who showed that markets make large moves more often than classical models assume. Investors underestimate not only large downside moves, but also large upside moves. That is exactly why cheap options can sometimes explode in value. At the same time, this is not free money, because most of the time nothing happens and the premium evaporates. That is why this must be treated as small, tactical and disciplined.
â–  Asia: Japan is closed and therefore gives no impulse. The Kospi is up about 1%, Taiwan is slightly higher and the Hang Seng is lower. That is not a clearly strong picture, but also not a panic picture. For chips, the key question remains whether lower levels are bought again.
■ Macro and rates: Rates are not doing much this morning, but remain a breaking point. The U.S. 10-year yield is around 4.68% and Germany’s 10-year yield starts around 3.15%. The market is reacting calmly so far, but if rates rise further, that can again pressure equities. Euro/dollar is around 1.1530 and dollar/yen is around 159.2.
â–  Oil, gas and Iran: Oil is up about half a percent and European gas prices are about 1% higher. That is manageable, but the risk around Iran and the Strait of Hormuz has not disappeared. Negotiations between the United States and Iran are stuck because both sides are making compensation demands. Iran knows that a rising oil price can become politically sensitive heading into the U.S. midterms. As long as oil moves only modestly, the market parks this risk, but if escalation returns, oil can quickly become the breaker.
â–  Iran and political risk: The core issue is that this problem will keep festering as long as there is no real solution. Iran still has proxies such as Hezbollah and the Houthis, and can continue to create economic pressure through oil and geopolitical tension. We are in the same camp as Jamie Dimon here: eventually there has to be a solution, otherwise Iran remains a factor that can repeatedly scare markets.
â–  Gold and silver: Gold and silver are somewhat lower today, but the options market still shows reasonably strong demand for precious metals. That is notable, because the spot move itself does not look immediately strong. We therefore continue to watch this, but today the signal is less clear than before.
â–  Bitcoin: Trades around 64,000 dollars and therefore remains within a range. The crypto market is not giving clear direction to the broader equity market yet. Crypto stocks therefore still need more confirmation.
â–  NVIDIA: Wants to mobilize about 500 billion dollars in capital for AI infrastructure. The share price held up reasonably well and that is the most important signal. A huge amount of money is being requested from the market, but investors are reacting calmly. That means the market still believes this capital will flow into AI, data centers, compute power and productive growth.
â–  AI financing: The risk is that all those investment plans are eventually scaled back, for example because capex becomes too heavy or because energy remains a bottleneck. For now, the market is not pricing in that risk aggressively. As long as money remains available and the investment cycle continues, the underlying support for AI suppliers remains present.
â–  AI suppliers: The money from the AI financing wave mainly flows toward the picks-and-shovels. These are the suppliers around chips, data centers, cooling, power, gas, turbines, networking equipment and semiconductor equipment. Share prices do not have to rise immediately, because a lot is already in the valuations. But these stocks remain in the spotlight and can regain momentum once the market chooses more direction again.
â–  Vertiv: Remains a clear name within cooling and data center infrastructure. If AI data centers continue to be built out, cooling becomes a structurally important part of the chain. The stock is volatile, but remains a logical read-through from the enormous capital flow into AI infrastructure.
â–  ASMI: Remains a logical European read-through from the AI investment wave. If hundreds of billions continue to flow toward AI data centers and compute power, demand for advanced chip production and equipment remains supported. The stock does not need to move higher immediately, but remains structurally well positioned.
â–  Besi: Also belongs to the European AI and chip chain. Advanced packaging remains important as demand for more powerful chips and more efficient chip architecture continues to rise. The stock can remain volatile, but on dips Besi remains interesting as long as the chip cycle is extended.
â–  ASML: Remains the strategic heavyweight within the European chip chain. The AI cycle cannot continue without further expansion of advanced chip capacity. That keeps the long-term story intact, even if the stock sometimes moves slowly in the short term.
â–  Schneider Electric: Is an important European name within electrification, energy management and AI data centers. We have a love-hate relationship with the stock, because valuation and timing can be difficult. But fundamentally Schneider Electric clearly fits the story of higher power demand, data center buildout and AI infrastructure.
â–  Siemens Energy: Remains an important name within energy infrastructure around AI data centers, partly because of its position in gas turbines. The stock is trading around the weekly VWAP line, roughly near 148 euros, and that line has continued to provide support so far. If the market weakens again, a pullback toward 121 euros cannot be ruled out. Still, we think Siemens Energy can ultimately make a new high again, provided momentum returns. There are never guarantees, but on dips this remains a stock to watch closely.
â–  Caterpillar: Received a downgrade from a U.S. broker yesterday. That is not a one-for-one comparison with Siemens Energy, but it does touch the same broader theme of cyclical infrastructure, machinery and capex. We think the impact on the broader investment story is manageable as long as the AI and energy infrastructure cycle remains intact.
â–  Shell: Is not a high flyer, but can be a backbone stock in a portfolio. The market is not yet fully focused on the role of gas within the growing energy demand from AI data centers. If investors pay more attention to that structural gas demand, Shell can move further higher over time. The stock does not offer excitement, but it does offer stability and long-term room.
â–  TotalEnergies: Fits, like Shell, into the energy story around AI, gas and power demand. If energy remains the bottleneck for data centers, large integrated energy companies become more relevant again. TotalEnergies is therefore not a pure AI name, but it is a logical indirect read-through from structural energy demand.
â–  Chip stocks: The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index was lower yesterday, so we should not pretend the sector is already breaking out convincingly. The more important question is whether chips find support on dips. We still think chip stocks can come back, possibly sharply later this year, but the market first has to show that lower levels are being bought again.
â–  Software: Software stocks were somewhat better in the United States yesterday. That is interesting, because this area was previously under pressure because of AI fears, valuation and doubts around growth. If software is picked up again, that can strengthen the fallen-angels theme.
â–  Hims & Hers: Reported numbers and maintained its outlook, but we cannot get excited about it. It is nice that guidance remains intact, but for us this is simply not a stock to actively pick up now. Growth is not enough if valuation, profit quality and investor reaction are not convincing.
â–  Rocket Lab: Reported good numbers, but the question is whether this is already the moment to buy the stock again. On dips we do find Rocket Lab interesting, because there is growth in the company. Still, valuation remains an issue and within this space we still prefer to look at SpaceX.
â–  SpaceX: Remains more interesting to us than Rocket Lab. From the options market, upward call structures previously stood out, suggesting that some parties are taking a recovery into account after the sharp correction. We wanted to do something with it before, but ultimately did nothing. Today we look again, but doing nothing can still be the right choice.
â–  Tencent: Reports this week and will be important for sentiment around Chinese technology. If the numbers are good, that can also support Prosus. The market will mainly look at gaming, advertising, AI and cloud.
â–  Prosus: Remains a stock to watch if you believe Tencent will report good numbers. In a positive reaction, Prosus can rise further. The weak spot for us remains the position around Just Eat Takeaway, while the other holdings look better.
â–  Riot Platforms: Has signed a major deal with Anthropic and that is another sign that bitcoin miners are shifting toward AI facilitators. Miners are therefore no longer viewed only as a lever on bitcoin, but also as providers of compute power and infrastructure. If these kinds of stocks dip and sentiment improves, there may eventually be an opportunity to use that.
â–  Crypto stocks: Are slowly coming back into view, especially once the holiday period is over. Still, there is no rush yet. Bitcoin is still in a range and the stocks first need to show more convincing momentum.
â–  Fallen angels: We continue to look for stocks where investors need to look through near-term noise. That mainly applies to software, publishers, chips and some infrastructure names. The market is still flip-flopping too much to become aggressive, but opportunities can arise in these names precisely during weak moments.
â–  Closing view: The start will probably be mixed. The market gives little direction, but beneath the surface a lot is still happening. NVIDIA and the AI financing wave keep suppliers in focus, energy remains a bottleneck, oil and Iran remain risks, and SPX options can become interesting if the market gives another VIX spike and then turns sharply higher. We are doing very little ourselves right now and are actually satisfied with that. Buy-on-dips remains the market, chip stocks can come back and fallen angels remain interesting, but calm and selectivity remain important.
